The British Government has announced it will legislate to allow councils to host motor racing on public roads, opening the door to an F1 race around the streets of London, theTelegraphhas confirmed.
Under the new legislation councils will have the power to close highways in order to host events, opening up opportunities for motorbike races and rallies across Britain, which has been approved now in anticipation of Formula E's race around Battersea Park in the summer of 2015. It does also raise the possibility of a London Grand Prix becoming a reality, though the logistics of actually putting on such an event remains a major stumbling block.
Making the announcement, prime minister David Cameron said: "I can announce today that we are going to enable more road races for GB motor sport. We think this will be really useful to British motor sport: more races, more events, more money coming into the country and more success for this extraordinary industry."
Bernie Ecclestone has been a long-time supporter of the idea of a London Grand Prix, which would see a race contested on a circuit passing landmarks such as Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. London mayor Boris Johnson is known to be a keen advocate, though Westminster Council, the local authority which would put on the race, appears to remain uncommitted to the plan.
The London Grand Prix could raise as much as £100 million in ticket revenues and endorsements, with the potential global television audience around the one billion mark. In 2012 Bernie Ecclestone raised the prospect of a London Grand Prix and a provisional circuit was discussed. "It's no joke, 100% completely no joke," he said. "With the way things are, maybe we would front it and put the money up for it. If we got the OK and everything was fine, I think we could do that."

I hope this isn't at the expense of Silverstone.

From the video I've seen of the circuit being driven, it looks absolutely awful, besides the backdrop of course.

London's streets are hopelessly unsuited to racing. There are so many obstacles here such as islands that it would cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to even prepare a circuit. The video is uninspiring to say the least. Sponsors and suppliers like Pirelli should keep their ideas to themselves.

This is all a big propaganda stunt, a remember a few years ago Rome was looking to stage a Formula one race and the conclusion was it is impossible for any large city to do this without causing a massive upheaval, London grinds to a halt just for one train braking down in the underground. Don't forget we have a general election in 2015 and David Cameron and his Tory friends are trying to do some popular announcements knowing full well this will never happen.

If they really need to have a street circuit, then instead of London, have one in Douglas and Ramsey on the Isle of Man.

Otherwise please do not have us suffer through more boring street circuits....please.

And yes, please bring back Magny Cours!:clap

No, not London, we dont need to go there. Silverstone is home of F1 here. Think if we had another race, London, Silverstone would suffer.

Magny Cours be good to have back, but reason we stop going there was the hotels for the drivers were miles away and the facilities were not up to standard (in Mr E's eyes)

I really liked that track.

Mr E leaved track due to the factor money and he needs an alternative street race in paris.read it

In May 2008, Ecclestone confirmed that Magny-Cours would stop hosting the French Grand Prix after the 2008 race, suggesting that he was looking into the possibility of hosting the French Grand Prix on the streets of Paris. [ 4 ]
In June 2008, the provisional calendar for the 2009 seasonwas released, and a French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours appeared on it, scheduled for 28 June. However, in October 2008 the 2009 French Grand Prix was cancelled after the French Motorsports Federation (FFSA) withdrew financing for the event.
