Not necessarily. They found the wear rate to be the same, hence the decision to go on the softs. You lose pace on the Mediums without gaining a durability advantage.

I think we can be proud as a team, very good pit stops, good strategy with both drivers, kimi doing a very good race, and Fernando, wow, no words for that...
RBR was quicker than us + RIC had the advantage of being able to pit earlier with first SC, considering that, we had a very good race, we finished ahead of 2 Mercs without them having real trouble, and, we finished in front of everyone who had the disadvantage of not being able to pit immediatly.. This was a very good race from whole the team

Alonso put up a genius performance, he performed the bit risky strategy perfectly, saved the tires the best way he can to not loose much time, could had even win the race if Hamilton managed to defend against Ricciardo, but second place is more then awsome under this circumstances.
Alonso is what i call a complete driver.
Bravo for Kimi to, he finnaly waked up and drove a great race.
Forza Ferrari! :ferrarifl

Rikkiardo deservingly came his second victory, with two precise maneuvers at the end that got him the victory also he drove the rest of the race perfectly.
Fettel should be ashamed, he got four titles and to get beaten like this...:lol

Hamilton drove perfectly, he made a mistake at the start and he still dominated and finished third, what a guy, he got huge balls, going for every chance, attacking any way he can to progress.
What a stupid team order from Mercedes, im glad Hamilton didnt let Niko go, they are both fighting for the championship so its just not fair, so what if Niko is going to pit? Hamilton sure doesnt going to slow down and loose time to let him go, what a load of crap.

Even myself was cheering for Lewis as he was cutting through the field :) genuinely, sitting in the first corner grandstand I can honestly say that he (most people felt for him yesterday when his car caught fire) along with Ricciardo, Alonso, Kimi and Botas were the most applauded drivers whenever they were passing us. Boy, to the contrary - Rosberg and Vettel are clearly disliked by the fans in general.

Very entertaining race to watch. In circumstances like these you almost always see the best talented guys finish on the podium.
I'm very happy our guys - yes Kimi too - did great. Fernando on the podium is something we and the team AND Fernando needed. Just to get the feeling back.
Realisticly seen we can't expect that to happen a lot in the coming races, but who cares:

This whole season, It hasnt been much fun to write after a race because it has always beeen some sort of damage limitation type of race and trying to find something positive.

But today Alonso was MEGA!!!! (to borrow from Hamiltons dictionary.. ;-) )
What a race! Not only was it entertaining, it gave us a damn good result for both drivers. So many pluses to choose from-
1. Alonso 2nd holding back both the mercs.
2. Good result for kimi too so we jump williams in constructors.
3. The merc boys are at war again.
4. Dany belted vettel again.. AND vettel spun. :lol

Wish for more of the same for the rest of the season. :pray

And Rosberg wonders why he is rarely loved from the fans ... maybe Lewis should have parked his car that the driver with the fresher and also softer tire can pass the one with older mediums...

These are tears of pure joy! I'm so pumped, so happy, so full of emotions... One of THE best day/s of my life (probably even thanks to a certain beautiful a and supercool girl I met there :)) It had everything. The race was just brilliant (hopefully it wasn't just what I felt being there and it was awesome in TV as well... didn't had time to watch it yet)!

I just can't concetrate on anything else now :D It's so awesome. And seing Alonso figthing for win and finishing second is just... heavenly.

It was worth every Euro/Forint spent, so everyone who is deciding to go and was not in any race yet... just do it. AAAAAAAAAA! Even though the engine noise is not brilliant and GP2's are louder then F1 now.

Congrats Ferrari and thank you, what a wonderfull weekend you gave me :clap

Goes to show, we have the best drivers on the grid, Kimi for making up so much ground and Fernando who is always phenomenal on Sundays.

We need to get our car right, give our boys a fighting chance in the front and not midfield, we r Ferrari!

The next race at Spa would be different as its easier to over take and harder to defend, so yes, Ferrari please work all summer break to bring some new packages, would like to see at least one car on podium at Monza after the break....

I'm over the moon with yesterday's result! Ferrari even had a chance to continue the streak of at least 1 win in a season, but as soon as Fernando was leading I said I would be happy with any podium finish & I am, there's still time to sneak a win in the remaining races.

Great race from ALL in the Scuderia Ferrari. Fernando & Kimi got the maximum out of the cars, the strategies were good & so were the pit stops. Happy to see Kimi & his car coming to terms with each other, too.

And I'm happy for us as the results should make TSN a much nicer place for the summer break :-D

Cheers to all, time for me to watch the race again on tape (or whatever it is called now)!

Ferrari's driver put in strong performances at the Hungarian Grand Prix with Fernando Alonso claiming an unexpected second place finish thanks to error free driving. Kimi Raikkonenhad a difficult task to rise through the ranks from 16th but still finished 6th.

Marco Mattiacci, Team Principal: “It was a great race and very pleasing to see our team fight back from an extremely complicated Saturday. Kimi and Fernando demonstrated just what they are capable of and the whole team was up to the task. However, this result is just a step on a journey which started a few months ago. Fernando’s second place is a confidence booster and a sign that the major effort everyone is making to bring Ferrari back to the top is moving in the right direction, however we have to be realistic about it. Here, the weather and the track conditions leveled out the performance differences and that’s why we must not delude ourselves. Now we must just go back home, set on always doing better.”

Fernando Alonso, 2nd: “This podium means a lot to me and the whole team, because after so many difficult races, we managed to get the most out of everything, also taking a few risks and second place seems like a win. To do 31 laps at the end on used Soft tyres was a great challenge. At that point, the strategy suggested that if we had made a third stop, we could have finished fourth, but we decided to run to the flag instead. This race shows that anything is possible when there are unusual conditions like today, with a wet start and the appearance of the Safety Car. We managed to make the most of all opportunities that presented themselves, taking the best decisions even at the most difficult moments. Sure, the characteristics of the circuit, with its limited overtaking opportunities, helped us and that’s why we have to be realistic and continue to work on the car, to improve in all aspects.”

Kimi Raikkonen, 6th: “Today’s race was difficult, but much more fun than the others, as I had a good feeling with the car, the pace was good and I felt I could push. After the way qualifying went yesterday, sixth was the most we could hope for. At the start, I got away well but then I lost vital time behind a Sauber and when I caught Massa’s Williams, I couldn’t get past: here in general, overtaking is not easy and we lack speed down the straights. Sure, this is a good team result, but we must not get too excited, because even if there are signs of improvement, we still have much work to do in a lot of areas to get to where we want to be. We’ve had a very complicated start to the season, but I hope the second part of the championship will go better. I have great faith in the team and I feel we are going in the right direction. Even if it’s going to take some time, I’m sure the results will come.”

Pat Fry, Engineering Director: “After mixed fortunes in qualifying yesterday, today the team showed it could react extremely well and keep a cool head when faced with the variable situations that arose during the race. It’s never easy in cases like this, with rain at the start, the Safety Car, having to avoid traffic and especially with having to keep faster cars behind us, but the team performed very competently. The F14 T demonstrated the good race pace it had already shown on Friday and that has helped us re-take third place in the Constructors’ classification. After the summer break, we come to two races that will be difficult for us, on two tracks where it will be important to make the most of any opportunity, just as we did today. On behalf of the team, I wish to congratulate Fernando and Kimi. We had promised them redemption and we were true to our word. We know that there is still a long way to go, but we will spare nothing in our efforts, continuing to work hard to improve, day by day.”

Here's where his engineers come in. We should find out the car's state when Kimi says it felt the best for him and, if possible via tweaks to the machinery, apply the changes right away. We need both cars delivering maximum points for the rest of the season.

What a drive by Alonso...

James Allen - "In practice sessions and the race to that point, no-one had done 32 laps on a set of softs, which is what Alonso would need to do in order to make it to the finish without stopping. From practice the predictions ere 21 laps maximum. Factor in cooler temperatures and you could push it to 25 laps. Add in some skilled tyre management by the driver and you might get to 28-29 laps. But 32 laps was hard to imagine. It highlights what an outstanding drive it was by Alonso."

Have you even considered that he might drive his car harder and that his driving style might contribute to his troubles? Have you ever wondered why Nico does not race with Brembo breaks? Maybe Lewis has been taking a calculated risk? In Canada his retirement was clearly because he drove more of the race with more rear brake than Nico. Nico's engineer was heard telling him just that and asked him to copy that. Then the Merc failure for both cars and Nico, not having used most of his rear breaks up by then, being able to nurse his car to the finish line.

Once again Lewis Hamilton fans disregard facts and blindly follow him crying racism and sabotage if they don't get their way, just like Lewis.

I hope Nico gets fed-up with Lewis' kamakazie style of racing and starts dishing the same out to him in the races to come. I hope his lucks runs out and that these huge mistakes Lewis makes, like spinning at the start of Sundays GP, costs him races. I hope Nico beats him with races to spare this year so that comes Abu Dhabi, he could be able to not even race and be the WDC, but still goes out and wipe the floor with him.

I still don't rate him very high. As i have said before all drivers in F1 are good, that goes without saying, but only a very few drivers are truly great. Nico and his team mate Lewis i don't even remotely rate as greats. What Nico have been able to achieve against Michael was, i feel, after the best of Michael have been given to F1.

Though I agree with your point about driving the car too hard (I made the same point about Massa v. Alonso and Alonso stellar reliability versus Massa's) I don't agree with your Canada remark. His retirement in Canada was due to being behind Rosberg and that not allowing the brakes to cool enough. If the positions were flipped I would think the same would have happened to Nico.

Also regarding the Brembos, please check your facts. Both Mercedes drivers use(d) Brembos. As do Ferrari I believe. (I think I remember seeing their logo on a sponsor banner somewhere).

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/115087

Lastly, though I dislike Hamilton as much as the next Tifoso, he is a superior talent to Rosberg. And as such I often want the champ to be the more deserving. If Rosberg wins the championship he will still not be respected, similar to his father. He has a rocketship under him and Lewis has had some unfortunate luck (be it his fault or pure luck). Put an Alonso, Ricciardo, Vettel, Hulkenberg, Bottas in that Mercedes and see what Rosberg does against them. How often this year when Rosberg and Hamilton have been able to race each other without some kind of fluke has Hamilton won out? The majority, Bahrain and Hungary being the most glarring. Rosberg on fresher softer tires both times failed to pass. Ricciardo was able to pass Hamilton last week. Alonso was able to keep Hamilton away without really being threatened, and then Rosberg, in a car that was lapping over 3 seconds faster still couldn't pass. He lacks the killer instinct that a champion driver needs. That's why no one cheers for Nico, he is too vanilla.

http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-slams-unacceptable-brembo-failure/

Just snippets from the article:"Mercedes will need to revert to the maker of Nico Rosberg's brake discs - Carbon Industries - for safety reasons"

"Ferrari, however, has reportedly had no problems in 2014, having stockpiled a supply of 2013-spec Brembo discs."

"Auto Motor und Sport reports that other Brembo users in F1 have also had problems in 2014, including Toro Rosso, Sauber, Marussia and Caterham."

NickEice
30th July 2014, 21:52
Those comments were proven false. That article was written before the race even happened. They both used Brembos in the race. That is a fact.

ManFromMilan
30th July 2014, 21:58
Sources with good knowledge of the situation have confirmed that both Mercedes drivers kept Brembo brake discs on the rear.

The qualifying issue had left them more cautious about the exact type used however, so the team decided to switch to an older and proven specification of Brembo brake disc material that had encountered no problems before.

Both drivers then ran with Carbone Industrie discs at the front because the team had not experienced any issues with them over the German GP weekend.

Read my original post Greig, his own choices has a direct influence on what happens to him, it is not the team that sabotage him like so many would like to believe. Don't take the brakes and make it an issue out of context. Sure you would have read all the posts, so to disregard the whole discussion is quite pointless.

And yes i dislike him, but i don't hate him. There is a difference.(i feel your continues mentioning of hate now turned into discrediting my discussion without having to look at the facts mentioned)

I hate the fans boys and media's irrational and unfounded praise and then calls of sabotage when things don't go his way.

I know I am in minority, but I'd like to see Hamilton win this year's title if it really goes down between him & Rosberg. His personal life is just irrelevant, on track he is one of the best. Agreed, Nico is well suited for this engineer dominated F1. How often have we heard him on the radio asking what he should do with the settings on the steering wheel. Lewis is more likely to say, "Let me race!" I'll take a guy who wants to race every time.

Well it's a very sad situation, for us Ferrari fans, when only half way through the season we are discussing which driver we want to win the title from another team. With that said, for me if I had to choose which driver from Mercedes to win the title it would be Nico, he is a very intelligent man, in and out of the car, Lewis is the total opposite, we all know his talent as a driver but as a person he seem's very difficult to manage and understand, His behavior at Monaco with Nico and the Mercedes team was totally unprofessional. When Nico had to retire at Silverstone it was reported he went straight back to the team to report a situation, which apparently helped the team and Lewis on the day. It was only a week later Nico was rewarded with a new contract. Lewis thinks he is clever but if he is not careful Mercedes might not renew his contract after 2015, behind the scenes at Mercedes they can not be happy with his babyish antics up to now, Mercedes like Ferrari like to be seen as a professional company.

Off topic. Been there, saw that, heard that, or rather didn't hear anything, and left track at the end of free practices. After 10 years of going to races this is very sad, guys, stay home and watch great racing, it is not worth a dime to go watch it live. Just my 2 cents. Sorry for off topic.

Nikola, my friend completey agree with you. I can tell you I don't have any regrets for not going this year to Hungaroring... Not at all!

I don't know you guys... The race was a blast and seeing it live was awesome. Also, I have a photo with Alonso's helmet, saw Ferrari almost wining the race, Alonso on podium and met wonderful and drop dead gorgeous girl from my coutry who is also Ferrari / Alonso fan.

Don't regret any moment of being there and I never will. I'm already sure we'll be going next year again. This time... Barcelona baby.

I suppose I'll get some disagreements or questionmarks on this, but I see a lot of similarities between Lewis Hamilton and Gilles Villeneuve......

I am sure that for the first time this was a blast to you expecialy with Ferrari 2nd place and meeting a nice girl (you devil). But I had a privelage to hear V12 V10 and V8 engines. I am sure that this new turbo era sound just like Trabant to NA engines from the past!

Looking back... I remember when we used to bash Alonso
calling him names such as "Finger Boy" and "Uni-Brow"
and in the end he's at Ferrari.

Quite normal. He was driving for another team and they were beating Ferrari. We hate that. I was mad and furious toward MS while he was driving for Benetton....
