F1-bosses are considering introduction of a short qualifying race on Saturday to determine the grid.

If it goes according to the plans of the new F1 bosses, then in addition to the normal qualifying could also determine an additional qualifying race on Saturday, the starting grid. But the new format is not fixed yet.

Qualifying sprint race without limits

For Liberty is important: The qualifying race would take place on Saturday at prime time. Just before the football matches in the European leagues. There would be no fuel or tire limits in a 100-kilometer sprint. With the aim of giving the drivers full throttle from the first to the last lap. This is especially intended to attract young people.

This better be an elaborate April Fools joke. Honestly Ferrari better come to their senses and abstain if they even support this in the first place. I hate how they want to implement change for the sake of change.

There's no way the engines will cope with that idea in addition to the actual race, got to be an April Fool for sure but the way things are going nothing would surprise me!:-E

nope.

I agree. With the 3 engine limit, this would not help. Had the engine limit been higher, then I would be in favor of it.

Thing is, a sprint race in Saturday has been thought over years ago. Maybe the engine regulations will be slightly changed in order to accommodate these rules. However, i see no point in this qualifying format if the race itself is interesting. That said, they should improve the Sunday race itself and keep qualifying as it is.

:Hmm F1 as we know it is sinking deeper into the quagmire.
We need the voice of reason to fix it. Come on Ross exercise some authority over Liberty.
In this context ignorance is not bliss but knowledge is.
I get off my soapbox now. :-)

That idea of qualifying race on Saturday has been mooted before. Different people, same ideas. It is just another 'eureka' moment, an idea that will be cure for all problems but in reality that will cause many problems as well. Again we hear these gold ideas when Mercedes appears to have an edge and races are boring. Instead of coming up with constant knee-jerk solutions, they should think a bit and propose some rational stuff. The truth is introduction of V6 hybrids hurt F1 as a competition and made it more expensive. However, say this to big teams who earn big money for various reasons and this technology is important for them as car manufacturers. It is a difficult situation and won't be solved by introducing qualifying races, success ballast, standing restarts etc. Have we needed those stuff in 2008, 2010 or 2012 to create exciting seasons?

Well, first of all, they want to make F1 a similar to one make series, like US crap of IndyCar or Nascar, they have no technical innovation, just cars going around track.
They want to make F1 an entertainment business, and last time I checked, F1 was not in the entertainment business, they were in the business of Motorsports, with a lot of technical innovation.
You cannot run a company as a democracy, (in US its just an illusion of a Democracy), you cannot give everyone what they want. You run a company as how it should be run, one man/woman with a vision, if that vision is wrong, it will begin to suffer and get a new man/woman with a vision, but if that vision was right, it will thrive. First, they have to make F1 about cutting edge technology, and make it easy to get into, without high costs of running a team. When manufactures can get in and they can say they won in the most technologically advanced Motorsports series. If you have the right set up, they will come. I thought F1 will go the route of WEC, they will give a team an amount of energy to use during a race, and who is efficient and fast will win.
They should change the rules, not the culture. Culture of F1 is, F1, you cannot put a different culture in to F1.
On the subject of Grid Girls, the feminists are destroying their own gender! Come on, women are women, you cant change women to men. Men are men, men can never be women. They are trying to appease a special part of a population, about 5 to 7%, and alienate about 90% of the population. Politically correct is never the answer, the word politically alone tells you, the correctness is just a relative. Correctness is never relative, its absolute. 1+3 is 4, it never is 5 or 3. Maybe someone thinks its 5, or 3, but does it make it right?? Dont tell me, its exploitation of women. Those Grid Girls, its their job, they chose to do it, they want to look good, and be models, so is it wrong? How can anyone say, dont do it, so it means, they are trying to control women, and thats not right. Women are free to do as they want, just like men.
The biggest problem is, people are trying to be someone they are not. First, they should look into themselves, be happy or accept who they are, then find your strengths, and use your strengths.
Its like a gold sword comparing itself to a steel sword, and the gold sword want to be steel, it never can happen. Each has their strengths, one is expensive, other is strong. So, its better to use a steel sword to cut wood and gold sword as a presentation! Just know your strengths, and use your strengths to succeed!

It's true, the US Nascar and Indycar are nothing without the likes of Lewis Hamilton showing fans what a true F1 race driver is and can do! Alonso going over to Indy is great but the likes of the greatest F1 driver, Lewis is needed over there. Liberty knows that and who knows? Maybe they can $$$ him over at some point. Ferrari needs him first before he goes anywhere.

Reminder ladies and gents: Drivers have to make all 2018 season with 3 pieces of ICE (internal combustion engines), MGU-H, tubo & with just 2 pieces of MGU-K, ES & CE.

So another ES or CE change for BOT and it's grid spot penalties.:-D

:-) indeed! only wish the Formula one official website would divulge this info too...
they treat fans like puppets, asking for money to have access to their site, but do not give the important info readily such as tyre usage, nor components used... which, at this stage of Formula one, because of all the rules and regs, is absolutely VITAL info to correctly gauge the performance of the teams / drivers....

Thanks anyway.

Its the F1AT (and not something with Turrini) and in the article of gp preview of what to expect fron each team, they say this:

The aerodynamic became aware from the very first kilometers that the data found in the wind tunnel and the CFD did not match those collected on the track and immediately ran for cover by preparing a new fund (and diffuser) that was originally planned for China but which, according to information gathered by FUnoAnalisiTecnica, could already debut in Bahrain.

Kimi Raikkonen was in his usual indifferent mood at the Bahrain Grand Prix, saying to one journalist that there was "no point" answering his question.

Ahead of Liberty and the FIA revealing their latest blueprint for the sport, Raikkonen was asked first about what he would change about Formula 1 if he had the power to make the rules.

A seemingly harmless question was given the trademark 'Ice-Man' response.

"I wouldn't change anything," Raikkonen said.

"I don't have the power so what's the point to waste the time and even think about it? I don't understand.

"What's the point for me? To give you a list but then I have zero power? We don't make the rules.

"What's the point in even telling and making a story out of it?"

About the Bahrain new diffuser, it looks like our boys have been working at full steam,

This are the changes :

The central boat tail has gone back having a more well defined angular channel, similar as last year but not as pronounced. Gone is the flatter more rounded solution from late 2017 and all of 2018 to date, they also have included the winglet on the outer edge, that one was seen in FP1 in Melbourne. This new profile reduces the angle of attack of the central section, hopefully improving the stability of the flow with a slight reduction in total expansion, looks like they are trading a small amount of total downforce for more consistent stable downforce by keeping the central flow attached over more conditions.

Let’s hope it works guys !

Different

I have written about it in 2018 challenger and here between all of the pics.

I’m citing

“The central section boat tail has gone back to having a more well defined angular channel, similar to last year but not as pronounced. Gone is the flatter, more rounded solution from late 2017, and all of 2018 to date. They have also included the winglet on the outer edge, first seen in FP1 in Melbourne.

The new profile reduces the AOA of the central section, likely improving the stability of the flow, with a slight reduction in total expansion. I assume they are trading a small amount of total downforce for more consistent/stable downforce by keeping the central flow attached over a broader working range.

Hopefully this will increase the drivers confidence in the car and allow Seb to push harder.”

Seb and Kimi ahead of Bahrain: the car has potential

Sakhir – Hazy skies and a strong breeze welcomed the F1 teams to the second round of the 2018 Championship. Scuderia Ferrari drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen arrived late last night in Bahrain, and by late morning they showed up at the track that will host the first night race of the season on Sunday. The win and double podium finish in Melbourne has only served to reinforce their focus and determination for the coming weekend, in which Seb is expected to take the 200th start of his F1 career.
“ I think this year we have a better car”, says Seb “but we have to make it work at its full potential. At the beginning of the year it is normal that you still have to get to know the car. Obviously the time that we have on track to try things is limited, but we have some ideas for here that we are going to try. As for myself, I need to do my job and we need to do our job as a team. We only look at ourselves and try to improve and I am confident, as the car has potential”.

“Melbourne was a good and straightforward weekend,” added Kimi. “Overall we had a good feeling with the car and decent speed . The Sakhir track is very different and with completely different conditions. Practice will be in the daylight and the race in the dark, but we are used to it. It’s quite hot and the feeling with your car is different. I’m happy with the way we started the season, but we need to keep working hard, improve things and hopefully we’ll achieve a good result again with both cars. We need to be up there straightaway and consistently. We are still in the early days of a long season and there are still many things we need to learn about this car. I think there’s a lot of potential; where it’s going to take us in the end, we don’t know. But we’ll give our best, that’s for sure”.

The edges have the same connection fin and the center, well to mee it also looks the same!!I reaaly dont see the changes that you describe!!! I was waitning to see a clearly different deffuser since this is suppose to be the solution to our problems!! I dont know.Maybe this is not THE diffuser, and we will bring it to China as it 1st rumoured to have it!!

We will have to wait and see, those appreciations are from a friend from a technical forum, and the guy is super good, also everybody in that forum agrees it’s new so... let’s wait and see.

Maybe this will help. Note how the central section has a more defined angle on the trailing edge of the diffusor, downward to a lower central section. This is only present on the Bahrain version. It is a subtle change, but it is clearly there.

Ferrari did not bring a new speaker in Bahrain: the car that went to the check had the extractor that was briefly seen in the free practice of the Australian GP that opened the season and that was then put aside.

Well two nights ago I had an amazing dream, believe me I am telling you the true. Vettel was dominating the field from Hamilton, who finished the race 30 seconds behind him. I dont know which race it was, maybe Spain, didnt saw where was Kimi, because I woke up in the next moment when Seb won. My only wish is that Kimi,Seb will bring the Ferrari back to dominating ways like in 2000-2004 era, I know for now its only just a big dream, but I will never stop believing. Forza!

As always, we went in search of technical innovations. Ferrari! They pushed the car early in front of the garage to perform a first pit stop training in the midday heat. The photographers were able to take a close look at the latest diffuser specification, which briefly debuted in free practice in Melbourne.

https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/formel-1/f1-fotos-gp-bahrain-2018-bilder-donnerstag/

Article from Italian webpage.

The Ferrari SF71H seen at the technical checks did not present major technical innovations compared to the victorious one in Australia. During the free practice in Melbourne, comparative tests were carried out with a version of the front wing very similar to that of last year. After analyzing the data the version of the wing brought to the track in Australia has been abandoned in the return to use the "classic" mounted on the SF71H since the day of the presentation. Wing that is easily recognizable because of the presence of a double blowing that the Italian team has inserted on the mainplane and for the upper flaps that are anchored to the large flow diverter positioned on the leading edge of the main profile.

In the rear area, on the other hand, the modification in the outside area of the diffuser brought to the track in Australia was confirmed, which is different than the previous version due to the presence of a small transversal profile that joins the external part of the diffuser. This were the changes that both drivers also confirmed for the qualification and the race.

Compared to the Australian version, the Maranello team has made a small change to the central channel that, in the version seen today in the pits, seems to have a more squared shape compared to the previous version.

A solution that guarantees a better stability in the generated load, losing theoretically in expansion (to be evaluated, on the other hand, a possible slight increase in the rake angle).

Very important FP1,FP2 coming up, at the end of the day we will know if the updates will work on the car or not. It would be fun to watch if we are still the fastest at the end of the straights. I have a lot of faith in the team, they manage to build a very good engine with a solid chassis. Now they only need to find the right balance, and we are in the hunt.

Any word from the team meeting blueprint?

The BIG meeting about overtaking is over.....it was more about listening to Liberty's suggestions.

The big F1 meeting was not like a discussion. It was a presentation by Chase Carey & Ross Brawn. All team principles got a piece of paper with the planned changes in written form.

This is just ridiculous. Ross has lost his balls to stand up to Chase Carry. Chase carry has no idea what F1 is about, all he knows is NASCAR and IndyCar, both of which are CRAP!
F1 was the only single seater racing series worth watching and Case Carry has to come an ruin that too! They have this mentality, all about profit, which is just wrong. You cannot squeeze out every penny and expect to have a good product. How can they look at F1 as an entertaining business?? Are they that stupid?? They take away the essence of F1, then you dont end up with F1, you end up with just cars going around the track for fun, without a purpose. F1 is about technology, F1 is about driver skill, F1 is about pushing the limit of the technology and finding an edge.
What Chase Carry and Ross Brawn need to do is to find High Profile sponsors, who would pay to have a global audience. Then, give each team a sum of money with graded factors, such as performance, or "punching above their weight" factor, how long they been in F1 and other factors.
What is now going on is ruining F1 and I dont think fans can take this any longer. F1 will loose their hardcore fans, and then thats it, its the nail in the coffin.
