Comments after 6 Hours of Fuji

Fuji 15 September 2024
Ferrari leaves Japan with a ninth-place finish for the 499P number 50, secured by Fuoco, Molina, and Nielsen. However, Pier Guidi, Calado, and Giovinazzi, in the Ferrari – AF Corse “sister” car, number 51, had an unfortunate 6 Hours of Fuji, being forced to retire.

AF Corse’s Ferrari number 83, driven by Ye, Shwartzman, and Kubica, finished in 12th place. Here are the comments following the seventh and penultimate round of the FIA WEC 2024.

Nicklas Nielsen, 499P #50: “My first stint went pretty well. In the second, we knew maintaining that pace would be difficult, but it turned out to be more challenging than we expected. The same thing happened to Antonio (Fuoco) in the end. We struggled today, gaining a few positions initially and then losing them towards the end.”

James Calado, 499P #51: “Unfortunately, the lap one collision compromised our race. We managed to resume, but the car was damaged, and we were no longer competitive until we retired. Mathematically, our teammates could still win the title, although it won’t be easy. We’ll do everything we can to support them.”

Antonello Coletta, Global Head of Endurance and Corse Clienti: “Unfortunately, we’re not accustomed to commenting on such a result, given the car’s potential and after witnessing a race where strategy, pit operations, tyre management, and the drivers’ on-track performance were flawless. We did everything in our power to challenge for the podium, and falling short leaves a bitter taste. It was frustrating to see cars involved in the lap two incident, which heavily affected the race for Ferraris 51 and 83, return to contention for the top positions. However, we found some consolation in the 296 LMGT3’s first WEC win, thanks to a powerful performance by Thomas Flohr, Francesco Castellacci, and our own Davide Rigon. This victory is a fitting reward for the tremendous effort the guys at Maranello and the AF Corse team put into achieving this result.”

Ferdinando Cannizzo, Head of Endurance Race Cars: “We knew the race would be challenging, but it became even more difficult after the collision at the start and the damage to the underbody of the 499P number 51, which compromised its performance. However, the team executed a flawless strategy, allowing number 51 to attempt to make up for the lost time and helping the 499P number 50’s crew move up the standings and secure a podium position. Unfortunately, the conditions didn’t allow us to hold those positions, and the advantage gained through our strategy was nullified by the final Safety Car. We are deeply disappointed, as today’s result seriously jeopardises our chances of winning the Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ World Championships.”

Ferrari eleventh in Bahrain

Sakhir 03 November 2024

Ferrari bid farewell to the Sakhir circuit with a 11th place finish in the last race of the 2024 FIA WEC, secured by the 499P number 50, driven by Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen. The 8 Hours of Bahrain concluded with the 14th position of car number 51, piloted by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi, after a penalty imposed at the end of the race.

Ferrari wrapped up the season in third place in the Manufacturers’ championship; Fuoco-Molina-Nielsen (winners of the 24 Hours of Le Mans) and Pier Guidi-Calado-Giovinazzi finishing second and eights, respectively, in the Drivers’ standings.

At Sakhir AF Corse’s number 83, 499P, piloted by Yifei Ye, Robert Shwartzman, and Robert Kubica, finished eights, securing second place in the independent team’s standings.

The race. The 499P number 51 led the race for over six hours. Towards the end, in a heated contest for the podium, the number 51 Ferrari made an early last pit stop and climbed to second position amid the melee following the last round of stops.

Following the race, the Stewards issued Decision No. 40, penalising car number 51 and relegating it to 14th position.

According to the document, the car used 28 tyres rather than the 26 permitted for Qualifying and the Race.

In fact, the team respected the 26-tyre limit. However, because of a mistake, during the race they used the tyres fitted to the car for the grid formation instead of those scrubbed during qualifying and intended for the race.

These two tyres were not considered as part of the contingent allocated by the team, hence the Stewards' decision.

The race was less fortunate for the drivers of the 499P number 50. Molina suffered a contact at the start, which damaged the front flicks, slowing his pace and requiring a nose change at the first pit stop. Nielsen and Fuoco made up ground to reach the top five, but another collision an hour before the finish resulted in a left rear puncture, costing positions and forcing an early stop to change tyres.

The statistics. Ferrari’s impressive season will be remembered for two victories and five podium finishes across eight races. The official cars secured a historic win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while the Giallo Modena-liveried 499P triumphed at the Lone Star Le Mans at COTA (USA).

Over the season, the three Ferraris achieved five podium finishes, as previously mentioned, across three events: first and third places at Le Mans for cars number 50 and 51, third place at Spa-Francorchamps for car number 50, first and third places at COTA for cars number 83 and 50.

Independent teams. AF Corse closed the season in third place in the FIA World Cup for Hypercar Teams, with two victories—at Imola and COTA—and six class podiums in Qatar, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Austin, and Bahrain.

In the Drivers’ standings, Ferrari’s official drivers Ye and Shwartzman, alongside Kubica, finished the season in ninth place.

See you soon. As the curtain falls on the 8 Hours of Bahrain, with the Rookie Test scheduled for Sunday, 3 November, on the same track, the World Endurance Championship will return to the spotlight in Qatar in 2025, which will host the FIA WEC Prologue (21-22 February) and the season opener (28 February).

Such a careless mistake from the team!

Comments from Sakhir 8 Hours of Bahrain
Sakhir 03 November 2024

The Ferrari – AF Corse 499Ps finished 11th and 14th in the 8 Hours of Bahrain with crew numbers 50 and 51, respectively. The final round of the FIA WEC 2024 also saw the AF Corse team’s Ferrari number 83 finish in eighth position. Here are the post-race comments from the Sakhir circuit.

Nicklas Nielsen, 499P #50: “We can’t be satisfied. At the start, the contact Miguel suffered meant we had to chase. We found a good pace at mid-race, climbing up to the top five until a second collision that caused the puncture knocked us out of the running again. Without these setbacks, I believe we could have remained in the hunt for a podium finish.”

James Calado, 499P #51: “We’re sorry we didn’t win the world title for Ferrari. It was a challenging goal going into this race, but we were determined to give it everything right to the end. With the 8 Hours of Bahrain, our second season in endurance racing’s top class comes to a close. It’s been a positive year.”

Yifei Ye, 499P #83: “Overall, today’s race was tough. The high temperatures pushed us to the limit. At various points, we showed we could be quick, but we struggled in the final part. Nevertheless, I think all the guys performed well, and I thank them for their hard work throughout the season.”

Antonello Coletta, Global Head of Endurance and Corse Client: "We close the 2024 season with two victories at Le Mans with he number 50 and at COTA with the number 83, and in total five top-three finishes. We can still look back on a very positive championship, with third place in the manufacturers' standings and second in the drivers' standings for Fuoco, Molina and Nielsen. In this race in Bahrain as well, where we led for almost the entire 8 hours, we saw confirmation of our cas and crew's improved competitiveness - a solid foundation to build upon for the 2025 season."

Ferdinando Cannizzo, Head of Endurance Race Cars: “Compared to 12 months ago, our progress—making the most of the waiver introduced in Brazil and our ever-increasing knowledge of the car—is clear, as shown by number 51’s race pace. We were unlucky with the number 50 crew, as the early and late-race contacts heavily impacted their performance. However, we are satisfied with having recorded significant improvements over last year, aware that there are more steps to take to compete for titles.”

Need to put up more of a challenge outside of Le Mans next season

The 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours winners will build a car to compete in the series’ Hypercar class.

McLaren confirmed the news in a brief statement quoting McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, saying simply: “We’re back.”

Ferrari front row for the 6 Hours of Imola

Imola 19 April 2025

Two Ferraris will start ahead of the field at the 6 Hours of Imola, the second round of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship. Antonio Giovinazzi secured pole position in the number 51 499P fielded by the official Ferrari – AF Corse team: it marks the Italian driver’s second consecutive pole after topping qualifying in the season-opener in Qatar. Completing the front row was the number 83 499P of AF Corse, shared by Maranello-based manufacturer’s official driver Yifei Ye, together with Robert Kubica and Phil Hanson. Starting from eighteenth will be the other car in red livery, the number 50 of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen. Tomorrow, 20 April, the green flag is scheduled for 1 p.m. local time.

At the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, the number 51 499P was quickest in both the third free practice session in the morning and the all-important official qualifying session in the afternoon, held in dry conditions. Giovinazzi clocked the fastest lap in qualifying with a time of 1’29”623, finishing 370 milliseconds ahead of the number 83 Ferrari driven by Robert Kubica. Antonio Fuoco, in the number 50 car, saw both of his fast laps deleted due to track limits, which prevented the driver – who took victory alongside Molina and Nielsen at the 1812 KM of Qatar on 28 February – from progressing to the top ten shootout.

In the decisive Hyperpole session, Giovinazzi – who shares the number 51 Ferrari with Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado – confirmed himself as the fastest driver by further improving his time, completing a lap in 1’28”920 and putting 0’’758 between himself and the 499P in Giallo Modena livery.

The numbers. As mentioned, this is Giovinazzi’s second consecutive pole position and the third overall for the Italian driver – and for the number 51 crew since their debut in the top class of the FIA WEC – having also qualified fastest at the Lone Star Le Mans 2024.

The Prancing Horse will start at the front at Imola as it did last year, when the three Ferrari 499Ps secured the top spots on the starting grid with crews number 50, 83 and 51 respectively.

Antonio Fuoco

“There’s not much to say after this Hyperpole session other than to apologise to the whole team and my teammates, because we had the potential to do well and to start with three Ferraris at the front. Because of a mistake, we didn’t make it into the Hyperpole and tomorrow, starting from the back of the grid, we’ll have to fight our way back through the field. We know we can count on a very fast car with great pace, so we’ll do our best. On a personal level, I’ll be trying to make up for the mistake I made today.”

Antonio Giovinazzi

“It’s always a special feeling to get into the cockpit of a Ferrari and know that so many tifosi are cheering us on. Securing a second consecutive Hyperpole here at Imola, in such a stunning and passionate setting, makes today even more special. I want to thank the team for the outstanding work and for providing us with a fantastic car. We often talk about the idea of a ‘perfect lap’ – it’s hard to truly achieve it, but today I think we came very close. Starting from the front on this circuit is a big advantage in terms of minimising risk in the early stages of the race – that’s definitely a plus, and tomorrow we’ll give our all in the race with the aim of delivering great joy to our tifosi.”

Antonello Coletta

“Starting with two Ferraris on the front row at our home race is incredibly meaningful and fills us with pride. Congratulations to the team for their work, to Giovinazzi for a memorable Hyperpole lap, and to Kubica for completing an all-Prancing Horse front row.The only regret is that Fuoco couldn’t make it into the decisive session due to track limits, especially as he was proving to be very competitive. Tomorrow we face a long and demanding race, but our aim is to keep up this pace, execute everything perfectly, and reward the Ferrari tifosi who will be supporting us at Imola. The passion and affection they show every time the 499P is on track means everything to us.”

Hopefully we get a clean start tomorrow and also #50 is able to get a good haul of points.

Ferrari wins the 6 Hours of Imola

Imola 20 April 2025

At Imola, Ferrari secured its second consecutive win in the 2025 FIA WEC, celebrating victory with the number 51 499P, driven in the race by Alessandro Pier Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi who, after starting from pole position, climbed the top step of the podium to the applause of the Italian tifosi who had come to support the Prancing Horse.

The number 83 499P, entered by AF Corse and entrusted to official Ferrari driver Yifei Ye alongside Robert Kubica and Phil Hanson, finished fourth. Meanwhile, the other car fielded by the official Ferrari – AF Corse team came home 15th, with Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen at the wheel.

Benedetto Vigna, Ferrari CEO, was also present to celebrate the victory of the Maranello-based manufacturer, attending the 6 Hours of Imola – an event that drew 65,504 spectators to the grandstands over the course of the weekend.

The race. Starting from pole with Calado at the wheel, the number 51 499P was a constant frontrunner throughout the race, remaining firmly in the top two positions and making the most of a strong team strategy. It was Pier Guidi who took the chequered flag at the end of 212 laps.

It was a trickier race for the number 50 crew, who began from 18th on the grid. Despite a remarkable recovery by Nielsen and Molina, who climbed to fourth place, the final stages saw a setback when Fuoco – at the wheel – made contact with the number 8 Toyota, causing a puncture to the left rear tyre. The unscheduled pit stop proved decisive in the final classification. The incident resulted in a 45-second penalty for the number 50 crew, who nonetheless leave Imola with the fastest lap of the race – 1:32.504 – set by Fuoco.

Also putting in a noteworthy performance was the number 83 499P. Starting from second on the grid with Kubica, the Giallo Modena-liveried car was in podium contention for much of the race, eventually crossing the line in fourth, 20 seconds behind the winners.

The numbers. The number of overall wins for the 499P in the FIA WEC has now risen to five: the two victories this season – at Imola and in Qatar, with Fuoco, Molina and Nielsen – add to the extraordinary triumphs at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023 and 2024, respectively with the number 51 and number 50 crews. The car fielded by privateer team AF Corse, meanwhile, had triumphed in the 2024 Lone Star Le Mans.

Into the history books. The Imola weekend – which saw Ferrari top all the sessions held on track – is set to enter motorsport history. On the circuit hosting a world championship round for only the second time, Ferrari became the fifth constructor to achieve at least five victories in the World Endurance Championship. With today’s result, Pier Guidi, Calado and Giovinazzi gave the Prancing Horse its first overall victory in a race on Italian soil in 52 years – the last occasion being in 1973, when Brian Redman and Jacky Ickx triumphed at the 1000 Kilometres of Monza in the Ferrari 312 PB. For the second consecutive round, the 499Ps also secured pole position, fastest lap and the race win.

The standings. Ferrari consolidates its lead at the top of the constructors’ standings, moving up to 92 points, while in the drivers’ standings Pier Guidi–Calado–Giovinazzi now lead with 50 points. Ye–Kubica–Hanson are second, followed by Fuoco–Molina–Nielsen in third, with 39 and 38 points respectively.

The calendar. The next round of the FIA WEC is scheduled to take place at Spa, Belgium, on 10 May, the third race of the season over a six-hour distance.

A thunderous roar rose to the sky at the end of the Inno di Mameli (the Italian national anthem). It was the voice of the tifosi – out in force beneath the podium at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari to celebrate the victory of the number 51 499P. The comments of the key figures, collected at the end of the race, convey both the joy of a historic moment and the desire for redemption felt by the crew of the number 50 499P.

Antonio Giovinazzi: “Finally, a win! To achieve it on home turf makes it even more extraordinary. It’s been a perfect weekend – right from the free practice sessions, then the pole position and now this win. It was a long race, but we were well aware of the car’s potential and made no mistakes, neither in terms of strategy nor tyre management. My teammates were excellent, just as the whole team was, and we’re enjoying this moment together.”

James Calado: “This is one of the finest wins of my career, because I’d never stood on the top step of the podium in front of our own tifosi before. It’s an incredible feeling and I’m proud we managed to return to winning ways after such a long time – and to do it here at home. Today we made the most of our potential, had a bit of luck, and executed a perfect strategy. As a team we did an outstanding job, and we dedicate this success to our wonderful tifosi.”

Alessandro Pier Guidi: “I’m pleased with this win – we’ve been chasing it for a long time and without doubt we deserved it. Already last season, for one reason or another, we came close on several occasions without quite getting there. And there’s nothing better than clinching this victory in front of our tifosi, here at Imola. After the win at Le Mans, I missed standing on the top step of the podium, but I wasn’t worried because I always focus on the end goal rather than partial results. If I’d had to choose one race to return to the top, it would have been Imola.”

Nicklas Nielsen: “After a strong first part of the race where we fought our way back from eighteenth to fourth, things got tricky for us despite a solid strategy and the car showing good pace. We were unlucky with the Virtual Safety Car, and then we had contact which led to a puncture. It’s a shame, because we came to Imola aiming to score points in the drivers’ standings after our win in Qatar.”

Miguel Molina: “I think today’s race was really tough for our crew. Nicklas did two fantastic opening stints, and then we tried to gain positions by making the most of the best tyre strategy we could find – but we weren’t able to stay in contention at the top of the standings. It’s disappointing to leave Imola like this, but it’s only the second round, so we’ll keep working hard and looking ahead with confidence. Congratulations to our teammates on a fantastic win in front of the Italian tifosi.”

Antonio Fuoco: “Today we were tasked with a tough challenge, and the race played out in a very unpredictable way. Imola is a beautiful but demanding circuit when it comes to overtaking, so staging a comeback wasn’t easy. I believe we could have been in contention for a top-five place – maybe even the podium – but unfortunately things didn’t go the way we’d hoped.”

Antonello Coletta, Global Head of Endurance and Corse Clienti: “The satisfaction is immense with this victory in Italy for the number 51 499P in front of our tifosi. After our Qatar one-two-three, today reaffirmed how effective our winter development work has been. At Imola, we’d obviously hoped for stronger results with the other two cars, but for different reasons, we couldn’t achieve what we’d targeted. We take home a second win from as many races this season. My compliments to the whole team for the excellent job they did, as demonstrated on Saturday, for example, when we managed to substitute the engine of the number 83 in just one hour and 45 minutes – in time for qualifying – and secured a second place on the starting grid. This is undoubtedly a strong moment for us, but we can’t relax: there are six more rounds ahead, including the biggest challenge at Le Mans.”

Ferdinando Cannizzo, Head of Ferrari Endurance Race Cars: “This result rewards all the efforts made and reflects the incredible work and determination of the entire team. I’m disappointed we couldn’t put the number 50 499P on the podium due to the puncture, but the strategy we’d set to move it up the order was working very well. The number 51 crew delivered a flawless performance—despite the race being complex and the competition, as expected, extremely strong, we executed everything perfectly. Now we look ahead, aware that more tough races await, but with this spirit, I’m confident we’ll achieve further success.”

1-2 in WEC for Ferrari just now. We need AF Corse to run our F1 team.

Τhe only thing that puzzled me , was No50 after the pit stop and the driver change (Nielsen steped in) from 1st droped till 8th and was among the slowest . In some laps he was even 4!!sec slower then PierG (No51) and they had more or less the same fuel and same tires ???!!

i don't think the fuel was the same, he had much less. He ended with like 1%.

On virtual tank they showed them about 10% difference. That's why PierQ only did a super fast refuel in the end. They fuel difference doesn't justifies the pace difference.
Just saying it was like Nielsen was out of rhythm.
And it was a bit pity because till then No50 had done a fantastic race and was the fastest. Anyhow a delightful 1-2 !!!!
If we manage to win LeMans again this year we go for the triple (WDC-WMC & LeMans)

good thing we're winning in WEC, already we have 3 flags this year put up in maranello.....otherwise we'd have NO flags at all given how shitty we're doing in F1.

They don't have enough space so they tell you now that we are going so well in wec and wins almost every race, let's relax a bit in F1 because then we won't have spare place to put another flag.:-D
