gear box question

now that the team have to make ther gear box's last several races a question came to me. they are not aloud to change the gear boxes or the get a penalty. but what happens between races and different tracks require different gear ratios and surely they must change thoes and would that not mean they have changed the gearbox?

or have i missed something here?

Teams are allowed to change the gear ratios from one circuit to another and even from one session to another. And so are the maps on the ECU ( although the ECU is a standard issue for all the competing teams)

If i have to keep it simple, say i change the rear sprocket of my 250cc dirtbike from 38teeth to 36, that means i have changed the final ratio(as it is the final reduction before the drive reaches the rear wheel) - that doesn't mean i have changed the entire transmission. Same goes with engine maps on the ECU, it is changed from session to session or circuit to circuit...the limited number of parameters that could be changed on the Mclaren provided ECU is said to have caused a lot of 'non-Mclaren' teams a heartburn in the earlier part of 2008.

The gearboxes which must last multiple races are not used for Friday.

The teams will therefore work out the best ratios based on past knowledge and running in the first 2 sessions.

After FP2 the 'race' gearbox may be opened under FIA supervision and the ratios changed. - this will then be fitted to the car for Quali and the Race.

If the team can prove that certain components have become damaged they may be able to change them (again under supervision) under Parc Ferme conditions.
The dog rings which engage the gears are an example of parts which have been changed between quali and the race this season.

They cannot swap to a complete different box

Ok, so I've read that Ferrari will have to redesign the gearbox for the F60B, which in other words makes it a new gearbox... right.

I guess this is one of the reasons the F60B will only be introduced in Spain as Spain is the 5th race and the old gearbox had to last the first 4...

that is a posibility, but also I would assume the things they are not allowed to change are things like input shaft, countershafts, outputshaft, shift forks solinoids... basicaly everything other than the gears 1-7 themselves.

You can change the gearbox but you can't change it, end of story.
