48 min: Button improves to 14th but reports "terrible" rear stability, which will be a worry for the team as it evaluates the new diffuser.

BBC commentator Jonathan Legard: "Red Bull's relentless rate of development continues in Germany. There was yet another run of cardboard boxes through the paddock last night with the team's mechanics wheeling through a new floor and other new parts for the opening practice sessions. More bits are expected to arrive ahead of qualifying and the race. I only saw one new floor arrive and so the question is which car will be fitted with it in the light of the row over the front wing at Silverstone?"

Nico Rosberg shoots back to the top of the list with a lap of 1m29.419s, demoting Alonso to second. Vettel is third with Barrichello fourth.

McLaren are 'chisseling away' at the floor around the exhaust area.

Obviously got some overheating going on.

InsideFerrari: Also Fernando completed his run. He is currently 2nd behind Rosberg (1.29.419). More drivers are switching to intermediate tyres

0950: Rosberg improves to a 1:29.419 while Fernando Alonso is second with a 1:30.229. Then it is Vettel (1:30.294), Alguersuari (1:30.456) and Barrichello (1:30.501). Troubles for Jenson Button in the McLaren, who are trying out their rear blown diffuser upgrade today. Button radios back to his team that "rear stability is terrible".

Nico Hulkenberg returns to the pits after his run on intermediate tyres. He is second to Webber with Rosberg third and Alguersuari fourth.

Webber moves up from ninth to second with 1m29.975s, but is immediately demoted to third as Hulkenberg posts 1m29.206s to go fastest.

Kobayashi is the first out on intermediate tyres and has a very violent spin in the Sauber at turn six. No damage done though.

BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz: "McLaren's Friday practice struggles continue. Jenson Button just came back into the shed shaking his head again, with a look that says: 'We don't have a competitive car again.' Looks like they might make a change to his rear suspension before sending him back out on the intermediates. Lewis Hamilton's not faring much better and the mechanics are currently chiselling away at the floor of the car, possibly due to overheating problems. Worrying times for McLaren."

0958: There are dry lines on the track now and BBC F1 analyst Anthony Davidson predicts that the teams will be on slicks by the end of the session. Webber is quickest with a 1:29.048 with the Hulk second after a 1:29.206. Alguersuari is third, Rosberg fourth. Hamilton, Lucas di Grassi and Jarno Trulli are the only drivers not to have posted a fast lap as yet.

Vettel fastest on a very quick lap. He was using the kerbs and even got on the astroturf but held it all together to set a 1:28.735.

Massa has been off again, this time coming into the stadium section. It's a high-speed bounce over the gravel, but he continues.
