Looks pretty bad, wonder if they can get it repaired for FP2. They seem to be having cooling problems, look at all the gills on the engine cover.

Too bad is raining. Mclaren won't be as disadvantaged as if it was dry.

German GP - A rainy start

Hockenheim, 23 July – The first free practice session for the eleventh round of the Formula 1 World Championship, the German Grand Prix, has just ended under cloudy skies, having started in the rain, at the Hockenheim circuit. The rain eased off towards the second half and, come the end, Felipe Massa was second for Ferrari in 1.26.850, behind the Force India of Adrian Sutil (1.25.701) and ahead of Jenson Button in the McLaren (1.26.936.)

Fernando Alonso set the nineteenth time, (1.29.684) having completed just fifteen laps in the other F10, opting to save his tyres for the afternoon, confident that the track conditions will be more settled. Both Ferrari men started on full wets, before switching to intermediates halfway through and then trying some practice starts at the end.

Heikki Kovalainen and Karun Chandhok did not take part, with Lotus’s Finn replaced by Malaysian test driver Fairuz Fauzy, while the Indian Force India driver was substituted by Japan’s Sakon Yamamoto.

The second free practice session gets underway at 14.00 this afternoon.

Second practice is just over 15 minutes away and it looks as though we are going to get our first dry running of the day.

To the south west of Hockenheim, a large area of rain is moving in and we may again see wet running during the second half of the 90-minute session.

A wet morning of practice meant most drivers used a set of both the full wet and intermediate rubber and the teams will be very keen to conserve tyres if rain continues to fall this afternoon.

With just four sets of intermediates and three sets of full wets available to each driver, no race engineer will want to end up short of rubber if the inclement weather continues through qualifying tomorrow, when fresh tyres could provide a vital advantage.

Hamilton's car is still up on jacks and does not have a floor on it. He will miss quite a bit of this session as a result. He should still be out towards the end of the session and will be hoping there is no more rain inbetween.

The track is apparently dry but there are wet patches in several corners which make driving tricky

1303: The track is not completely dry, as witnessed by Kobayashi, who has a massive moment as his car hits some puddles. He holds it together though and stays on the Tarmac. Hamilton is having a new floor put on his car after that crash and he will probably miss the opening 30 minutes of the session. BBC pit-lane reporter Holly Samos says Red Bull are changing the engine on Seb Vettel's car. The change was planned, she adds.

Sutil is up to second place behind de la Rosa with a lap of 1m25.263s as the pace begins to hot up.

De la Rosa continues to set the early pace with a tour of 1m25.160s.

BBC F1 analyst Anthony Davidson: "You're not going to have any grip at all at this stage, in these conditions and with what will be very cold tyres. It's treacherous out there."

BBC Sport's Sarah Holt in Hockenheim: "I may need to sit down for the entire hour-and-a-half of second practice. I have spent lunchtime with the local fans here in Germany, where there were quite a few liquid lunches being ordered. There were some fine wardrobe memorials to F1 teams gone by on display, including an all-white Toyota tracksuit and a green Jaguar fitted shirt and lots and lots of old school Michael Schumacher items from the Ferrari era. The seven-time world champion has his own merchandise stand here but one fan had something that money can't buy. He told me he had spent 14 hours building a Mercedes front wing, which he was wheeling around the circuit."

we seem to be like more then a second off pace...more fuel??? i hope is not that we can't get heat into the tires again
So the SF-24 has been a decent car. Lets hope that the totally redesigned from the ground up SF-25 contender will be a beast that will give us tifosi something to smile about.

Alonso P1 on a 1.18.307, goes over 7 tenths quicker.

Button behind loses time behind a HRT, but was quite a way down anyway.

Rosberg's front wing is hanging off. I saw him go off in T1, but was nowhere near a wall or a curb.

    Wonder what's happened.

Here we go, was actually T1, hit one of the tiny cones on the inside apex.
