McLaren duo slam Ferrari's team orders

    It's on, now!

Jenson Button has joined the growing chorus of criticism regarding team orders that may yet result in severe sanctions being taken against Ferrari.

The famous Maranello marque were punished for fixing the German Grand Prix on Sunday by stewards who fined them $100,000 (£65,000).

The matter, however, has been referred to the World Motor Sport Council who, if they choose to pursue the case, have unlimited powers of punishment at their disposal.

The incident that saw coded messages being passed to Felipe Massa that eventually resulted in him slowing to allow team-mate Fernando Alonso to pass and claim victory left a bitter taste in the mouth and infuriated millions of Formula One fans worldwide.

"Personally I think team orders in Formula One are wrong, in any motor sport category, although sometimes they are inevitable," said Button.

"We all want to win, and I know that every team wants to win, both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships.

"But they have to give both their drivers the same opportunity to do so.

"This was very early in the season. How early is it going to start in the future?"

For any driver given the message 'your team-mate is faster', as was the case on Sunday to Massa from his race engineer Rob Smedley, the natural reaction is speed up, not slow down.

"If I was told my team-mate is faster, I would think my team-mate is faster, so I would keep driving and hope he doesn't overtake me," added Button.

Echoing his team-mate's sentiments, Championship leader Lewis Hamilton said: "My reaction would be to go faster, that I need to find the time.

"For me if my engineer came across the radio, and just because I know how things are in our team, the message would be 'Jenson's faster, you've got to find time in the first and second sector'.

"As simple as that, which means pick up the pace if you can. It's encouraging rather than telling you. It's a lot different."

The fact is, no matter Ferrari's protestations to the contrary, it is clear for the remainder of this season Alonso is their favoured driver and Massa will have to play second fiddle.

That could count against McLaren who have consistently adopted a policy of treating both drivers equally, even if it proves to be detrimental to their Championship chances.

"All I can say is for us we're still in the best position overall," added Hamilton, who leads Button by 14 points and with McLaren 28 clear of Red Bull in the Constructors' standings.

"Although we're not the fastest, both myself and Jenson are going in the same direction, we're both fighting, so there's two horse power rather than one."

In 2007, however, it has long been claimed McLaren's insistence on equality cost Hamilton or Alonso the title as both finished a point behind eventual champion Kimi Raikkonen, then with Ferrari.

Hamilton disagrees, citing other factors that came into play that season, and instead is proud to drive for a team that in his eyes plays fair.

"There were races when I messed up and lost points. There were a lot of mistakes on either side," added Hamilton.

"If you're both going full pelt then one of you is going to do a better job and finish ahead.

"But I don't feel if one had been favoured more than the other one of us would have won the Championship.

"And it was definitely not the case of me being favoured over him. That was by far not the case.

"Instead it was a good experience for the team, and we've really come on in leaps and bounds since then.

"I think our team management, and the way it conducts itself, is probably the most professional I've ever seen in Formula One.

"I'm delighted and very proud to be a part of that."

Lewis Hamilton: "Mclaren the most professional team in F1"

This coming from the team that steal the documents of other teams and Its lead driver was caught red handed lying to race officals.

Oh boy, iv'e heard it all now, like i said before, If alonso was to win this week, there would be full scale panic in the british press.

Ron Dennis acted quickly yesterday to reject any suggestion that his McLaren drivers had been acting under team orders, which are banned in formula one. Lewis Hamilton was largely dependent for his win in the German grand prix on his team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen, allowing him past on lap 52 after the Briton had emerged from his second stop behind the Finn.

According to Dennis, Kovalainen was simply told that Hamilton was much quicker and he took the decision himself to allow his team-mate by. "The only thing we advise drivers is the respective pace of the other driver and they ultimately call it," the team principal said. "Lewis was nearly a second quicker than Heikki through the race and when he was told Lewis was quicker he just let him past.

"He knew that was the only way because the longer he would have held up Lewis the more difficult it would have been for him to have regained the lead. It was a tremendous sporting gesture and it's what being in a racing team is about. True team-mates do these things because that's the way they are."

Didn't expect anything better from them really . It's going to be interesting when the fireworks start in that team. Alternatively, Ron's and Withmarsh's faces when we win both championships.

"But I don't feel if one had been favoured more than the other one of us would have won the Championship.

"And it was definitely not the case of me being favoured over him. That was by far not the case."
LOL, that's why since Hungary Hamilton got all the extra qualifying laps and in the last race there was 1 fast car and 1 slow car.

and Rubens at Brawn, Spain i think it was?? (button was switched to a 2 stoppa) At end of day, RBR and Mcscum havent got drivers in the situation yet, bet in few more races if Lewis has more point gap than Button that order will come through. Both teams used team orders in Turkey. Webber being told to switch mixtures to save fuel (slow down) then Vettel catches him, them Mcscum do same after Button has go at lewis, lewis moans at team cos he doesnt want button challenging him.

Get off the band wagon Lewis and Jenson and get on the real world of Formula 1

Lewis and Jenson don't need teamorders, the most professional team in f1 leaves covers on Button's car before the start where they should not be

Dude, let me tell you, i used to HATE alonso, because of the things he and the spanish press said to ferrari, but im telling you even though i was rooting for Kimi in the final race of 2007, i was sure there was something fishy going on with Alonso's car.

Im not technical at all on f1, but even a blind man could see that his car was a pile of sh!te , ITV tried blame it on the fact he didnt have a fresh engine, but im not so sure and you know what, Hamilton had the faster car and still bottled it whilst Alonso held on in 3rd place waiting for one of the ferrari to drop out, this is when my opnion of alonso started to change, imo, it was obvious there was more to this mclaren story than he let on.

I could have sworn they even admitted his tyre pressures were incorrect or something going into the final races.

That team is dodgy as hell.

I think this is all very telling. Ferrari didn't just win yesterday, they dominated. I believe that shook it McLaren to it's core. They know that they are not the best team, and haven't been this year.Their points lead is a facade built on pure dumb luck and the misfortune of others, not that they have the fastest car. They've looked in the mirror and saw Alonso coming, now it's panic time in Woking.

Exactly, mark my word, if Alonso wins in Hungary, they and the pro mclaren media will be begging the FIA to dock Ferrari points, they know Ferrari have upgrades for Spa too, they are rattled, Alonso needs to keep the pressure up on them here.

I was reading another forum and apparently Ferrari sent out an email to those who must be signed up to buy their merchandise saying something like.....

" To celebrate Ferrari's 1-2 at Hockenhiem Ferrari are deducting 10% off all ORDERS"

Damn, too good to be true, well, maybe if we get a 1-2 again, we send that message next time.

Mclaren dont have this problem, their stuff is always on sale anyways, even poundland are selling Jenson button caps at half price.

C'mon guys of course Mclaren can race amongst themselves... like Ron said about Hamilton in 2007... they weren't racing the other teams, they were really racing his team mate Alonso

For any driver given the message 'your team-mate is faster', as was the case on Sunday to Massa from his race engineer Rob Smedley, the natural reaction is speed up, not slow down.
    Well said Jenson
