If that is what you meant, then it is a firm, NO. Remember, Hamilton became the world champion 2 years ago even when the F2008 was proven to be the fastest and most dominate car on the grid. The only race the F2008 lacked pace was in Hockenheim.

No, I said with the 3rd car in the standings, I though it was pretty clear to understand.

Argh, maybe it was true and what I meant was a bit hard to understand.

If the race finishes as it starts, Alonso would be 1st in the WDC standings with the 3rd car in the WCC standings:

1 RBR-Renault 469
2 McLaren-Mercedes 421
3 Ferrari 389

I read in some forum that it would mean an extra $10M for Ferrari if they get 2nd... which considering it's also $10M less for McLaren would be a bit of an advantage for 2011, so I kind of hope we get in front.

Anyway it would indeed be a mighty achievement from Alonso, although I think even if the car has been second-third best all season, Ferrari as a team have been better than that, always focused and not giving up even when they were almost 50 points behind the leader, and Germany proving their no-nonsense approach to F1.
Some win and they still feel like losers, I'm sure we all can name a team like that this year, while Ferrari may or may not win -most often they do win-, but they always feel like winners.

Thats the reason because Fernando is the best in the world. Red Bull this year 15 of 19 poles and Alonso still leading he is AWESOME.

Nelson Piquet won the 1983 WDC in a Brabham-BMW. He won it by 2 points ahead of Alain Prost in a Renault.

WCC.

1. Ferrari 89 points.
2. Renault 79 points.
3. Brabham-BMW 72 points.

Keke Rosberg won the 1982 WDC in a Williams-Ford. He won it by 5 points ahead of Didier Pironi in a Ferrari. Williams finished 4th in the WCC.

WCC.

1. Ferrari 74 points.
2. McLaren-Ford 69 points.
3. Renault 62 points.
4. Williams-Ford 58 points.

WCC points don't tell the whole truth. If we're talking about winning the championship in the third best car, then some might say Fernando already did it in 2005.

Why would anyone say that? he had a great reliable car in 2005? Who was better than Renault and McLaren in 2005 out of interest?

McLaren had the best car, Ferrari arguably the second best because Schumacher scored more points than Fisichella in the "great reliable car". Remember Imola for example? All experts in Spain agreed that it was the driver that made the difference that year.

No, it was the second best car, if Schumy had the same car as Alonso 2005 would have been a very tight championship; in fact Kimi would probably have won, as the McLaren was a rocketship with great speed advantage over the renault and Alonso and Schumy would have fought for the spoils taking points from each other. I'm glad Alonso took it in the end, he was the best driver that season by far.

We are talking about in the same season, a driver winning the WDC while his team only finishes 3rd in the WCC standings. The number of the car depends on the previous season results so it isn't relevant here.
