Dyer demoted to factory-based role in 2011

Chris Dyer's redefined role at Ferrari is factory-based and on "the production side", according to a specialist report.

Following the race strategy gaffe that cost Fernando Alonso the 2010 title, Australian Dyer was stepped down as head of track engineering.

Ferrari said he would get a "redefined" role for 2011.

An article by veteran correspondent Heikki Kulta in Finland's Turun Sanomat claims that role is relating to production, with 42-year-old Dyer - formerly race engineer to Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen - to be stationed at Maranello.

The report also said Schumacher would be happy to reunite with Dyer at Mercedes.

Ferrari's post-Dyer engineering structure features ex McLaren and Red Bull men Pat Fry and Neil Martin in newly prominent roles.

Dyer might have new contract which keeps him at Ferrari. So basically now he gets more money and less pressure ;)

It would be stupid to let him leave to MGP.

The same happened to Baldo. It's pretty much the way a company is expected to behave if there is pressure to change due to something happening (even if its irrelevant). The assumption that the individual would see it as a "demotion" is in the mind of the reader. They all know the score when they take the role i'm sure

    Agreed
I personally don't see it as a demotion at all

First of all, this is no different to when rumours and some reporters were saying (just after AD) that Dyer had been sacked. This means nothing, wait to see what Ferrari and Dyer say is his new role.

Being based in the office could be portrayed as a demotion and could be portrayed as a promotion - ie LDM is based in the office and he's the big boss of everything.

My attitude is, I will pay attention to what Ferrari and Chris have to say.

Whatever they say, surely it will make Dyer look guilty of a crime, which is sad

There's no demotion in anything I read.

Very stupid title if you ask me...

The moment of balance between results, common sense, and financial compensation has long gone IMHO.
The same could be said about any aspect of top level sports (champions league for example), I do believe they get paid ridiculous amounts of money.

Too much, for even a remote posibilty for not filling up a race car in its last stint with nuff gas till the chequered flag (Massa 2009).
Dont get me wrong, its no shame to make a mistake.
It is a shame to be complacent about them.
We often compare ourseleves with the functions of families, ie lemme know of any family anyone knows about, that is complacent about mishaps, wrongdoings or anythingt similar of its respective members.

For a race engineer to earn less then 6 figures in USD annualy, should be a conservative estimate.

The thing is, one can alomost say a catch 22 in this equation of similarity between a family and a race team, is the reason for its existence.
A family can allow trial and error, and can endure a roundtrip to hell and back barefoot, since its sole purpose is to stick together.
A race teams sole purpose is to win races.
Feeling good or bad about it, is our own choosing.
You dont get that luxury in a family.

$100 bucks a race and a dish of "Pasta e Fagiolo" with a hot loaf of campobasso bread.
