Alonso, “Important to have done a lot of kilometres”

Jerez de la Frontera, 12 February – It is definitely still too early to start evaluating its performance level, but the F150th Italia is proving to be a tough car. 217 laps were completed by Felipe Massa on the first two days of this second test session in the run up to the start of the Formula 1 World Championship and now Fernando Alonso has added a further 131, taking the total number of kilometres past the 1500 mark.

The Spaniard said he was pleased with the work done today, centred on evaluating the Pirelli tyres and a long distance run. “It is very important to be able to do so many kilometres one after the other, without experiencing any problems,” Fernando told www.ferrari.com. “It means we can pick up a lot of data which is useful especially when it comes to understanding the tyre behaviour, which is the biggest unknown at this test. I already said it in Valencia and I repeat it now: we must not think about what the others are doing, in terms of times. It is better to focus on our own efforts and then we can see where we are in Bahrain in a month’s time.”

Today, Fernando wore a helmet specially dedicated to Robert Kubica. “I am delighted that Robert’s condition is evolving in a positive way, with every passing day,” said the Spanish driver. “Now he will need a lot of patience, but the most important thing is he is getting better.”

Interesting thing about that. This is not definite, but it does comfort me knowing that the RB is not dominant.

One insider at a top team told BBC Sport that while it was hard to be definitive about comparative pace because of the differences to lap times created by fuel loads and tyres, Ferrari appeared to have a slight advantage over Red Bull at the moment as the team with the fastest car.

Other sources agree that the Red Bull and Ferrari are the two quickest cars, but say the Red Bull has a significant speed advantage over longer runs.

problem with who has fastest car atmo, is no 1 is running like that. People can only assume, thats what makes me laugh about BBC reports and Autosports. Its not about setting fastest times atmo, its about getting the kilometres under our belt and tyre work etc. Find out for sure on March 13th

Our car is looking really good. Hel of alot of kilometres again. Be good to have some rain in these tests to use and understand the Pirelli wet weather tyres

True, but doesn't it make you feel good that a member of a rival team thinks we are going well?

It makes me feel better after being told all sorts by AMuS.

So the SF-24 has been a decent car. Lets hope that the totally redesigned from the ground up SF-25 contender will be a beast that will give us tifosi something to smile about.

It's what others said before but it's important too that they're still the fastest car on fast/medium speed corners.

I think RB7 is gentler with the tyres. Lap after lap they seem to be able to keep a more constant lap time.

Ferrari is, IMO, the second best car but anything can happen in a month time.

Sandbagging or STR6 could be nearly as fast as RB7?

Is their car the one that will race at the 1st race?

I know that ours has some significant changes on the way.

I suppose their car won't change as much as ours but all of them are working on something for Bahrain. I hope we have a very good development programme as we had last year in the second half of the season. It will be key for a 20 GP championship. Molto longo.

it will be interesting to watch RedBull today, as apparently today is the first day they will use KERS.

Anyone know when Ferrari have been using kers?

A slight note from James Allen:

    Feb 12, 2011

Between 0930 and 1130 this morning the FIA trialled the new adjustable rear wing system on the pit straight. When the cars were within one second of each other, the relevant light came on in the cockpit of the pursuing car and the driver could ‘push-to-pass’. I’m told it all went okay.

"The time came on the first of an eight-lap stint and the drop-off (1.5s slower seven laps later) suggests he wasn't on the super soft tyre.

"No disrespect to Williams, but if the FW33 can do a 19.8 without resorting to super low fuel and super soft tyres, it makes the 20.3s from earlier in the test look pretty meaningless. You have to wonder how quick the front runners could go if they really went for it."

10:05 We can just make out the recovery track stopped about 200 metres before the corner, so we can guess the car parked rather than had an accident.

10:04 The timing screen says the Virgin has stopped approaching Turn 6, which is Dry Sack.

10:04 Recovery vehicles are heading towards the back straight, which is an area we can't see from here.

10:03 D'Ambrosio is the only car not back, so the Virgin looks like the cause of this stoppage.

10:02 The session has been stopped.
