Button: Ferrari two seconds up on long runs

Although Fernando Alonso believes Red Bull's RB7 is the car to beat, Jenson Button reckons Ferrari's F150th Italia has a two-second advantage on long runs.

As pre-season testing continues at Barcelona, everyone has an opinion about what is going on out on track, although no one is absolutely sure.

With Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel quickest on Friday by over a second and then again on Saturday, Alonso believes the Bull's RB7 is the car to beat.

"I still believe that, at the moment, the Red Bull is the strongest car," said the Spaniard.

"We all know that Red Bull should be ahead of everybody. So we expect Red Bull to be very competitive."

However, Button has a different opinion to the Ferrari driver.

"Do you really think the Ferrari is six tenths slower than the Red Bull?" he told the BBC in reference to Saturday's timesheets when Vettel was 0.663s up on Alonso.

"And the Ferrari on the long runs seem to be two seconds quicker than everyone else."

But, having said that, the 2009 World Champion concedes that with teams running different tyres, different fuel loads and different programmes, it's near to impossible to say for sure who is actually on top.

"There are so many things going on and in testing it's so difficult to get an understanding anyway," the McLaren driver said.

"The soft compared to the hard tyre is one and a half seconds quicker and if someone has the super-soft here it's another second.

"So it's very difficult to know the pace of people and what they're doing.

"What is interesting is people's consistency - that's when you can really see if they have a good car.

"Ferrari does look competitive in terms of consistency but so do a lot of others and the Red Bull looks pretty good but not as good as the Ferrari."

rearrange to make a popular phrase:
blowing your button(or bottom) up smoke
"Okay,...Jean is smarter than you....... can you confirm you understood that message" Bernie on the phone to Max circa 2009

Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines - Enzo Ferrari circa 1960

The title of this thread is misleading. Button doesn't say that the Ferrari is 2 seconds quicker on long runs. He's suggesting the lap times are misleading. But it's nice he finished on a compliment for us. Hopefully we're in the ballpark.

I have a feeling that button is playing some mindgames. I know he's a nice genuine guy, but you know what the silver plague can do to people.

anyway, pat fry said in Ferrari racing news 5 that we will have a massive update for the canceled Bahrain gp. Ferrari don't normally talk up thier upgrades so much so I think this will be something special.
he said the wings and the general shape of the body was different.

my question is, will this upgrade now be at the Barcelona test beginning the 8th march? it is around the same time as the gp would have beenso hopefully we will see it.

IMO we look very good this year. hope this continues.

Helmut Marko reckons Ferrari and Red Bull are about level, with McLaren behind them, followed by Renault and Mercedes.

Which means that Ferrari has the edge, as our #1 is better than theirs, and our #2 is better than theirs, too.

I don't really care what Marko says, I just feel/think Ferrari are on the right path, there's nearly a month for development and some interesting tests ahead. It will be important to have a strong start of the season and I wish the F150th will be the best car come Australia.

hmm helmut said that rb would lap the opposition come the friar race, now were equal?
I'll say one thing. he is entertaining

one thing I want us to sort out though. our starts haven't been that great. they put fernando at a disadvantage in aus, china, gbr, Singapore, Italy, even japan, but button was unable to hold on to that spot. they also contributed t the events that happened in abu dhabi.

so it's safe to say either alonso or the team need to work on the starts.

That's the exact quote I'm referring to. Now that he sees Red Bull have a potential roadblock in their quest for interstellar domination, he changes his tune.

Will be interesting to see what the guys at Maranello have in store for us update wise. Costa said they reviewed the regulations in its entirety last year and also recently stated that there will be a significant change to the rear come Bahrain.

I suppose the updates will be rolled out at the Barcelona test in order to verify wind tunnel data.

Not sure which on the starts..if you remember Monza, both Massa and Button did good starts, Id say Massa had the best start that day and
looked as though if he was on the front, wouldve got the lead instead of Button. Didnt look as if Massa had the race pace though, as once FA
got by Button, he started to pull away.
