Pirelli predicts four stops in Malaysia

Pirelli says this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix is likely to see teams choosing between three and four pitstops, as it admits that higher temperatures will result in more dramatic degradation than was seen in Melbourne.

Winter predictions of four or even five tyre stops per race did not come true in Melbourne, where only a few driver pitted three times, most stuck to two stops, and Sauber's Sergio Perez surprisingly completed the distance with just a single tyre change.

But Pirelli's motorsport boss Paul Hembery says tyre wear is set to be a bigger factor at Sepang.

"We were absolutely thrilled by our grand prix debut in Australia, but we're aware that Malaysia should be a very different proposition, with higher temperatures and increased degradation," he said.

"We said all along that we would be seeing two to three pitstops in Australia, but in Malaysia I think that figure is likely to increase to three to four."

Pirelli will also again take advantage of its dispensation to test additional tyres during Friday practice, and will give each driver two extra sets of a revised hard compound.

"We never believe in standing still at Pirelli, which is why the teams will have two extra sets of slick tyres available to them during Friday's free practice sessions for evaluation purposes," Hembery said.

"With testing not allowed during the season, this gives us a valuable opportunity to gather more data and feedback, while it also gives the teams an interesting taste of what could be coming in the future."

I think Pirelli don't really know how their tyres will work. It might be 4 stops or it could be 2, even 1 for some cars.

I bet the three cars on the podium won't pit 4 times unless there are a few SC, rain, or other special circumstances.

x2. I think they are still learning about the behaviour of the tyres themselves. I am predicting a 2 stopper for the top teams.

Well, they did predict a 2-3 stop for Australia and turns out they were right. Many of them only stop either 2 or 3 times.

If they say its 3-4, then I think we can expect to see a majority of drivers there, doing a 3 or 4 stop.

Malaysia is certainly a track that is harder on the tires with way more fast corners. cars will be spending way longer time going through a high speed corner than they ever did in Australia and this is where the tires goes off fastest.

god I hope not is bad enough they come in for diff type slicks but 4 or more time in a race thats crazy and a joke imo. ferrari might as well employ the Newey of the suspension world as that be the key not to have come in alot as well as good driving.

It's CRAZY that 'the pinnacle of motorsport and technology' has to use the lousiest tires. It must suck for Pirelli too as I'm sure
they have the technology to produce the best but are now being forced to provide inferior rubber. F1 tires are junk and
what hi tech company of any sort would want to be known for producing junk? These are absurd times indeed.......

I just hope we find out how our customer team is keeping the tyres so healthy and exploit that. looking forward to the weekend.

Tell you the truth... I'd rather see the teams pit 3 times and go all out than what we had last year with 1 stop and might as well turn the race off unless someone crashes or it begins to rain. Alonso on 3 stops was exciting at least, he was pushing rather than just cruising along holding position, kinda like it was in the late 90's, early 2000's when teams had different strategies. If there is enough performance difference between compounds, it might be better to do shorter, faster stints. We'll see, i guess.

TBH 3 -4 pitstops would add up to a very exciting race throw in a little rain and we will be on the edge of our seats.
As someone has already said more exciting than the one stop last year.
    Roll on Sunday.

If we continue to do 5 seconds pitstops vs mid to high 3s that others are doing.. that's around 6 seconds lost in the race thanks to pitstops. Is that exciting?

We seriously need to tidy up our stops. Last race, our pit stops were kind of painful to watch. The front all ready to go, the jack man stepped aside, and the car just stood there because the rear is not prepared.

Maybe they were a bit rusty. Last year they were better than most, including mac. (Monza)

4? four pit stops and none them can be tactical to get an advantage, they will be dictated by the tyres themselves.

This F1 thing is just getting crazy and likely to implode in on its self

    I hadn't noticed earlier, because I was looking at the difference between teams;
but, what's with the discrepancy between RB drivers??
