Ferrari can be F1 champions this year - Fernando Alonso

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso says he is confident he can fight for the world drivers' championship despite a disappointing start to the 2011 season.

He was fourth in the opening race in Australia two weeks ago, when he was a long way off the pace-setting Red Bull.

"We think we can do good things with this car. We saw in Australia it was not enough to fight for victory. We need to work," the Spaniard said.

"But at the moment the championship is very long and we remain comfortable."

The 29-year-old had a frustrating time in Friday practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix, ending the day ninth fastest, nearly two seconds off pace-setter Mark Webber of Red Bull, and he admitted afterwards he was expecting a "difficult weekend".

But he told BBC Sport he was confident he would be in the title fight as the season develops.

"I think so, that's our aim and our target," Alonso added.

"In Australia we were not as quick as we expected - but there are 18 races ahead of us.

"We are Ferrari. People expect a lot of us, it's good motivation but also extra pressure.

"When you do third or fourth it seems a disaster but I don't agree too much.

"It is not a bad result after what we saw in Australia. We need to be calm and do our job - we are strong enough to fight for the championship.

"Our competitors are strong - we respect them a lot - fighting with McLaren and Red Bull is not easy at all but that is also a nice challenge for everyone here."

Alonso said that while Ferrari's lack of pace in Melbourne had caught them by surprise, he was reserving judgment on whether it was an anomaly or the start of a trend.

"We were expecting a better result [in Australia]," he stated.
Fernando Alonso's Ferrari at Sepang Will Ferrari be competitive with Red Bull in Malaysia?

"We were hoping to fight for pole position and victory but we were not anywhere near to fight with Red Bull.

"We were a little bit surprised by our pace in Australia we have to confirm this in the next two or three races, if we really are that behind.

"In winter testing we were much closer to Red Bull so hopefully Australia was one strange race.

"But at the moment we don't fear anyone, we respect everyone but we think that if we do things right and if we do 100% we can be there.

"If we make a mistake we know how strong our competitors are. At the moment Red Bull are dominant as they were in 2010 - Red Bull are still the main challenge."

Alonso came close to winning the title in 2010, only to miss out at the final race when the team made a mistake in calling him in for an early pit stop, leaving him stranded down the field and at the mercy of Vettel.

When asked how he reflected on that disappointment, he replied: "I didn't give it too much time to be honest.

"It was a disappointing race for us in Abu Dhabi, it was very sad, we were close to the title but once the race was finished it's time to think about the next challenge and that was the 2011 championship."

And the Ferrari driver refused to blame the strategy call for missing out on the title.

"No, it was not one incident it was the whole weekend was not good enough and we did not have the pace to be as quick as Red Bull or to fight for victory," he commented.

"McLaren were quicker than us, the start was not quick enough, there was a safety car.

"There were many factors that surprised us but also I think that Abu Dhabi was the last race of 19 but we didn't lose the championship in Abu Dhabi we lost it also in Silverstone when we didn't score any points, it was a little bit of everything.

"We have reinforced some areas of the team where we discovered we were weak compared to our competitors - trackside we had to make some improvements and strategy wise we were also down.

"The team is stronger this year - if it is enough to win titles we will see in November but I feel much happier and confident than last year."

The interview with Fernando Alonso can be seen in BBC One's coverage of the Malaysian Grand Prix, starting at 0800 BST on Sunday 10 April.

Good to hear this from Fernando. The fact that he is calm, happy and confident shows that, as always, he'll take the fight to the end.

    Let's review 2010 for a second...
Alonso's results for the first 8 races:
    - Bahrain 1st
    - Australia 4th
    - Malaysia 13th/DNF
    - China 4th
    - Spain 2nd
    - Monaco 6th
    - Turkey 8th
    - GBR 14th

So far Bahrain has been postponed, he has matched his result at Australia, and looks set to improve his result at Malaysia. If he can maintain a similar level to 2010 in these first races and Ferrari improves for the rest of the season (and this season has 20 races, so that leaves 12 races to go after GBR), he can still fight for it.

Last year is gone and means nothing, we benefited greatly from Red Bull failures, no such luck this year it seems

Last year shows it can be done. This year is longer in terms of races, and it seems McLaren can steal points from RBR. Nobody expected RBR to have failures at the beginning of the 2010 season, and Ferrari/Alonso also made several mistakes in the first races.

The only thing you can guarantee at this point in time is that if the team gives up, they will not win the title. Everything else is still undecided.

lol, What would you have him say. That we're done for, don't bother showing up in the remaining races?

Last year, by mid season, there was talks about starting 2011 early and all. But we never really gave up. And the result is we almost got the title, and the most important thing from last year is that we managed to get that fighting chance.

Its just the 2nd race. Alonso and Ferrari knows better than us what they have in plan. Let them do their job, give this year a shot.

Last year lap difference was around 0.5 and this year is 1 second or more...
Last year they suffered from reliability, this year they seem not...
Last year our car was drivable, this year is not...
Last year we knew what we have to fix (ebd, f-duct), this year Stefano hasn't got a clue...

the think is, yeah can be done, but we shouldnt be doing it again!! we should of started where we finished last year, with strong car and built on it. Not play catch up, again. At this rate, both WDC WCC will be out of our reach by mid season.

Point No.1: Last year Turkry, it was a second or even more to Fernando, as he couldn't get out of Q2
2: You never know. RB may suffer reliability with KERS
3: That is one answer to point 4 i'm sure they are looking into it now.
4: It has been confirmed we may be bringing flexi wing for Turkey. Sounds like last year the tests were changed and we couldn't pass them and thought neither can the RB i guess. now they are working on one.

Don't compare Turkey laptime, because we haven't seen this year how the cars would be in there...
    Compare Melbourne...

Until I know they suffer, they still look bulletproof.
The same way, I never know about our reliability...

Flexi wing might give us up to half a second...
    While RB will still improve...
If the car is still an F60 regarding driving, then.............

True, but we were in a similar situation then to where we are now.

An this is better than the F60 imo already. the F60 was quite unreliable. and Horner and Webber said they had problems with KERS. maybe not that big, but they could be.

Flexi wing will give us laptime, along with when we get that problematic front end working. i'm sure that will catapult us back. i know the other team will have upgrades, but they may not be as big as the flexi wing. and Mac and Rb already have one. Also Merc to an extent.

No we were not in a similar situation...
Just in extremely high downforce tracks (Suzuka, Turkey, Hungary), RB was much faster, but in general F10 was drivable, had potential and lot of development...
    Anyway...
    We 'll see...
But if a team can get that much without testing, then it will be a miracle...
And I don't really believe in miracles...
