SERGIO PEREZ EYES FERRARI SEAT FOR 2012 SEASON

Mexican rookie Sergio Perez is hoping that he will be "ready" for a Ferrari race seat at the end of 2011. The 21-year-old, who so impressed with his one-stopper in Melbourne two weeks ago, had a less stirring outing in Malaysia when a rival's loose part caused him to retire.

He is at Sauber this year with the backing not only of the Mexican giant Telmex, but also Ferrari, as he heads the famous Italian marque's driver development academy.

Ferrari supplies engines, transmission and KERS to Hinwil based Sauber.

Felipe Massa had a poor season with Ferrari last year, and despite the Brazilian having a contract through 2012 it is suggested he must perform exceptionally this season to keep the drive.

Asked if he covets the seat, 21-year-old Perez told BBC One television: "If I was to say no I would be lying. For sure it's a dream for me to drive for them one day.

Asked about the 2012 season, Sergio commented: "I think it's too early to say. I think there's a long way to go for me, lots to learn and a lot of work ahead of me. I hope I can be ready for something like this by the end of this year," he added.

Perez looks good, but he needs to be patient. Felipe showed today he can still drive a Ferrari. His days are far from over.

Perez would be destroyed by Alonso and kill his career, he will need 3 seasons I reckon before he can think about it

Whatever it is, it still makes me happy to see there are drivers who would rather drive for Ferrari instead of Red Bull despite them Bulls being the top team at the moment.

Performance comes and go, but Ferrari's legend is permanent

That said, we'd better get back to our winning ways soon

Easy on the kid, he just voiced his fantasy... a seat with Ferrari :)

Prety much every single Ferrari driver had to show what he's made of for atleast 2-3 seasons. For now, the only thing we know about this kid is that he can save tires frew out the race when he's not being bothered.

Maybe it sounds like a joke about Perez, but he already tested on Ferrari's sim...
He looks good, but we can't know how much good.
If he comes 2012 without brilliant performance in 2011 though, then I can only imagine money is the reason...

Stu: "Greig, would you like a million pounds next year?"

Nico Hulkenburg and Adrian Sutil (although Legard said that was a done deal)

I'd love to see Kobyashi is Massa's seat. The guy is fireworks.... we'll ignore talk of maturity for now. He's plenty fast enough too.
