Cool Alonso: Ferrari making tyre progress

Fernando Alonso believes Ferrari has made progress with its tyre warm-up issues, leaving him more upbeat of doing well in qualifying in China.

The Maranello squad has endured a tough start to the season, with its main problem being a lack of form during qualifying runs.

On Friday, however, Alonso said he believes Ferrari could be in better shape in China thanks to better tyre warm-up.

"I think it was better here today," Alonso told reporters. "In Australia it was a problem with the warm-up, even in Malaysia with the hard tyre the first lap was not the quickest with the hard, but for whatever reason here it was okay.

"I was weaving on the straight because I had a very slow out lap, particularly with some traffic at the beginning, so let some cars go, and then weave a bit.

"For Felipe and me we found better warm-up in the hard tyres here than the other two races, so should be good for us in terms of qualifying and the race, for sure."

The Spaniard, however, said he will not be compromising his race set-up to have a better qualifying position.

"What we need to do is improve the car," he said. "When the car is good, the qualifying will be good and the race will be even better, so it is what we have to do. We have to find some time in the car, some improvements, and the qualifying and the race pace come together, everything becomes much easier, the strategy works, and everything is easier.

"That is the main priority for us - improve the car as quick as possible, get new parts every race and hopefully they work good enough. We know some other teams will bring new parts as well. We just need to bring something more than them."

Alonso refused to rule out fighting for victory on Sunday, although he conceded Red Bull and McLaren are still in front.

"Who knows? This is F1. This is unpredictable sport so anything can happen in Sunday's race. There are other drivers with more possibilities, to be honest, because I think Red Bull is still a little bit quicker than us.

"McLaren is a little bit quicker than us so they should be more favourites, but we will try to do the best we can, and if for any reason we can fight for the victory then be sure we will go for it."

Fernando needs to make most of his starts. I reckon a good start this weekend could mean a podium as race pace is very good.

True, but they didn't know the real pace of other teams. Now they all know where every team stands.

Fernando will never bs. If the car is garbage, he will let you know it. So when he says the car is good, it's probably true.

Tires progress doesn't mean the car will magically be quick

If you lack the aero downforce then no amount of tire heat could compensate for that.

hmmm...thought our Q problems was cause of a lack of heat in the tires over one lap and thats why we were quicker in the race.. well i guess if todays q was the best we could do with additional heat in the tires then we will be worse off with race pace..

I'm prob the only one that can't see any progress in Ferrari. Srsly, it's more like regress now! In the first 2 races we were behind 3 teams, now we are behind 4. Moving forward? Yeah right...

Imo these are just nice PR tricks from Alonso so fans could have a little bit of hope. Too bad I don't believe in our car. We may get lots of points again but that will be cos of other drivers misfortune, not cos we are good. Partly this already happened (webber, MS and Renault screwed up in quali).

So yeah, 2009 all over again.

i dont think the situation is like in 2009. when we went to china at the same stage, we had 0 points. I'm, still hoping for our race pace, but quali pace is a joke. We really need Turkey to work for us.

I can't help but notice the difference in our performance from today and yesterday. Yesterday the car looked rock slid on the track and it was hot. Today rear positively cold and the car was obviously twitchy. We r like Brawn cars in 2009

I think its hard to interpret where we stand in terms of pure speed alone from race pace. It seems to me like Vettel do have some speed in reserve, but he's usually more cautious to preserve the tires, and the McLarens especially Lewis is suffering from tires degradation as well. I think we certainly are better with tire management and this allows us to be closer to the front as we don't have to go conservative, or suffer badly from the tire wear.

    Just my 2 cents

As I said in the other thread, the air temp difference from today to yesterday was quite a lot. So much colder today. Supposed to be warm again tomorrow

Hmm, that would be good news for us tomorrow if thats the case. Hopefully it will be more closer to Sepang rather than Australia
