Ferrari: Rear wing ban no drama

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Saturday, May 21st 2011, 17:19 GMT

Ferrari has downplayed the impact of the FIA's decision to not allow the Italian squad to use its new rear wing in the Spanish Grand Prix.

The governing body ruled on Saturday that the higher-than-normal flap extension on the rear wing was breaching the regulations and so the team was asked to remove it.

Fernando Alonso, however, said the impact of not being able to use it is minimal.

"It was one of the new parts that we had for this race, but they decided we couldn't use it and so we removed it," said Alonso.

"It was a part that gave us a little improvement but we are talking about no more than a tenth or a tenth and a half so it's no drama to have to remove it."

Ferrari's technical director Aldo Costa added: "We are speaking too much about this little detail. It was a detail, so it was not a big issue with or without, to be honest."

Costa insisted Ferrari believed the wing was still legal despite the FIA's decision.

"For us, the detail was legal. But you have many clarifications with the FIA, many interpretations. There was a change of opinion, so you ahead. It was a small detail and it was not a case of us pushing for it, we removed it. It was a small detail."

they can soon jump on us that our wing looks to big, but the RBR front wing looks to flex alot, but no FIA jumping on them to investigate and ban.

Of course. Another day another Ferrari's innovation is being banned instantly. Nothing dramatic.

Forget the fact that the double diffuser and F duct was allowed for the entire season

That's what really gets me about it. The DD and F-duct required a ton of money and time for the other teams to design and incorporate into their cars, but the flap on Ferrari's rear wing seemed like a cheap update.

They waste time showing they are boss by banning our rear wing and the slightest of interpretation, yet as said cannot investigate fully why RBR have a front wing that flex's. They kicked the legs from under Ferrari immediately when they increased the test on movable floors, yet RBR moan about the changes that should have happened this weekend and they relent and don't change them.
Do they actually know how to test the RBR to see what makes its wing flex?

Ferrari let go of their rare innovations way too easily. With such attitude they won't go far... One more reason to hate Stefano, man has no balls.

Kept it. Then go to courts if necessary. Win or lose doesn't matter, publicity alone would do good for us. Maybe next time CW would not ban our "innovations" so fast.

Like most here, I agree it's dam annoying to be on the wrong end of this decision. But, as Nando and Costa have made clear, it was "minor". A tenth - which in retrospect would have put us 3rd on the clean side here - but, we can still win so, the wing decision is meaningless.

Interesting to read Nando coming out immediately saying no other team better turn up at Monaco with something similar that gets allowed. He obviously also thinks they are capable of such - and based on how I see their track record I can only agree with him!

Where did he say that, if it is possible to be done in another way then why are we not doing it?

Fernando Alonso - Formula 1 rivals must not use Ferrari high wing idea
    Sunday, 22 May 2011 09:03

Fernando Alonso is concerned the banned high rear wing seen in Barcelona this weekend could have given Ferrari's Formula One rival teams some clever ideas.

The FIA moved to ban Ferrari's interpretation of the rules when its new rear wing, debuted in Friday practice, was 3cm higher than normal due to a loophole about Gurney flaps and slot-gap separators.

"The wing was one of the new parts we introduced here but the FIA decided that we couldn't use it," Spaniard Alonso is quoted by AS sports newspaper.

"It gave us a small improvement, maybe a tenth or a tenth and a half, so it is not something dramatic.

"There is nothing more to say, in Formula 1 the rules are interpreted to the limit and sometimes you are allowed and sometimes you are not," he added.

Alonso insisted: "The important thing is that no one comes to Monaco with something similar and they are allowed to use it."
