'Stubborn' Alonso still has title belief

By Jonathan Noble Monday, May 23rd 2011, 08:50 GMT

Fernando Alonso says his own stubbornness is helping keep alive his belief that he can be world champion this year, despite Ferrari's ongoing struggles.

The Spaniard, who has finished on the podium only once this year after heading into the campaign as one of the title favourites, had another tough time on home ground last weekend as he came home a lapped fifth.

But despite that setback, which came after he led the early stages of the race, and the fact that Red Bull still has the fastest car, Alonso says he is not giving up hope of a major turnaround by his team.

"We'll see," said Alonso. "For better or worse I was born stubborn and I think there is still time left, as long as you have a good car and you can beat them [Red Bull] on pure pace. Right now we don't have it and they are further in the points count, but there's a long way to go."

Alonso's poor result in Spain owed much to the fact his Ferrari did not work well on the hard compound tyre that Pirelli brought along.

But with the compounds switching to the soft and the super soft for the next race in Monaco, Alonso believes that the situation could be much better for himself.

"For the first time this season, qualifying is going to be the most important thing in Monaco. And we'll see if, with the softer tyres, we can have a bit more grip,"

He added: "I think it will be very interesting to see the cars perform in Monaco. I am reasonably optimistic for Monaco because it is a very unique venue, a unique track with a very special set-up that we use.

"There is one clear thing, we are lacking downforce and in Monaco you normally put on maximum downforce, and our maximum downforce is not enough, we are sure of that.

"But, I have more or less the same feeling as last year. We finished Barcelona with some gap to Red Bull, 1.2 seconds in qualifying, and in the race they were very easy for the win. We arrived in Monaco and they were very competitive.

"This year in Barcelona again they dominate the weekend so there is still the hope that we can repeat what happened last year and we are in Monaco competitive as well."

Alonso has also not held back in expressing his frustration at Pirelli's new hard tyre.

When asked for his feelings on the rubber, he said: "The hard ones?

"That's a great question for Pirelli, why they brought a harder tyre which lasts less than the other [hard], that degrades more than the other and is two seconds slower."

True... Especially, if they want to make races a "two-stopper"!

that hard was just a fail. Pirelli need to make their hards a little better, and a lot fater, as imo there should only be a 1 sec gap between the tyres.

apart from that, i think they have done a good job, the softs are great.

You are right Rob: I stopped watching F1 when Schumacher was dominating F1 with out any real competition. I started watching F1 again when Schumacher, finally got a worthy rival: Alonso. I got back into watching F1 because of Alonso and his two WDC with Renault. So I have been an Alonso fan since that time, even when he was with McLaren and now with Ferrari. What I do like about him is his unwillingness to give up no matter what.QUOTE=Rob;666367]why would he? its still possible to win WDC crown.[/QUOTE]

Well, if Fernando can get a good result in Monaco and the Canada updates deliver as much as they promise I can see him fighting for the title in a similar way to last year.

Red Bull have now had a few high downforce tracks and barring Valencia there are no Tilke tracks (which really suit them) to worry about for a while. In the European season they'll have Hungary and as previously stated Valencia (and maybe Silverstone again) where you'd expect them to do better than the rest but that's about it. Don't forget Hamilton and maybe Button should both be able to take some points from Vettel too.

It's not over by a long shot and if there's one driver on the grid I'd have to back to overcome these odds it would be Fernando without a shadow of doubt

1- I will not put a penny on Nando taking the crown this season as I do not want to jinx it!

2- I seriously want the aero package to be astonishing coming Canada but if it ain't the season will definitely be over and they would have to put all their focus on 2012.

Go on Nando & Forza Ferrari

Canada, we should be ok with, as it requires less downforce, and we know we are not that great in that aera atmo, so fingers crossed good result and qualie.

Canada is a very peculiar race as it is most stop and go track of the season apart from the street tracks, has some very high speed straights and has been very good for us for a long time. It requires great high speeds and great traction, not that much downforce and it's a killer for the tyres. The compounds used there will be the same as Monaco, soft and supersoft. If we are going to win this year, Canada is the place.

It was a pain to see Alonso being lapped by Vettel and Ramilton.
But anyway, he is a great driver and he will get a better result in Monaco this weekend.

So will I, I was there in 2008 so let's hope for a better ending for Ferrari this time! Still a long way to go before that though.
