    Aldo Costa joins Mercedes

Ex-technical directors from Ferrari and HRT will join Mercedes later this year in order to bolster the team's technical staff.

Aldo Costa, who parted ways with Ferrari earlier this year, and Geoff Willis, who has been working at HRT since 2010, will join the team led by Ross Brawn to work under technical director Bob Bell. Costa, who will join at the start of December as Mercedes' engineering director, has worked with Brawn before during Ferrari's multiple-championship winning years in the early 2000s and Willis, who will join on October 17 as technology director, worked at the Brackley-based team when it was under running under the BAR name.

Costa will be responsible for design and development and Willis will head the aerodynamics, vehicle dynamics, control systems and simulation functions.

"I am delighted to announce that Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis will be joining the Mercedes GP Petronas team," Ross Brawn said. "Geoff is a highly respected engineer with over twenty years of Formula One experience, and we look forward to his arrival next month. Having worked closely with Aldo for many years, I know that he will bring dedication and championship-winning expertise to the team when he joins in December.

"Building a winning team is an exciting challenge for us all as we work towards the competitiveness and standards that we aspire to as the Mercedes-Benz works team. With a strong technical structure led by Bob Bell, we are moving ourselves into the best possible position to achieve our ambitions."

Mercedes motorsport vice president Norbert Haug is confident the new arrivals will boost the team's competitiveness after two years off the pace of the front runners.

"Since Mercedes GP Petronas was formed as a new team in early 2010, we have been putting in place the building blocks for success," Haug said. "Our technical organisation was strengthened by the arrival of Bob Bell and, working closely with Ross, he has identified the areas where we can improve still further.

"Aldo and Geoff will reinforce our technical management and bring the experience required to harness the talents of our people in Brackley; we have also recruited and invested at other levels in order to maximise our competitiveness under the Resource Restriction Agreement. Our goal remains to progress step by step in order to establish ourselves as a front-running team for the long term, in line with the tradition of the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows."

    Interview with Aldo Costa

Q:They fired you in may, but now in october Ferrari is not doing very well anyway.
Costa: "Let's draw a veil over that episode."

    Q:Come on.
Costa: "Well, they fired me and they immediately said that the car in summer was faster because I was not there anymore. But those changes were mine, I developed them. Now they got new things from other people and you can see they're still not going anywere."

Q:It was Alonso who wanted you to leave?
Costa: "No comment, I'm working for Schumi now."

Not sure if you made that up or not, is there a link to it? Would be sad if he left with such bitterness and what summer changes did he have most influence on, I thought getting the wind tunnel fiasco sorted out had more to do with that?

Aldo Costa says rejoining ex-Ferrari colleagues at Mercedes was too tempting to turn down
By Michele Lostia and Matt Beer Monday, October 3rd 2011, 10:29 GMT

New Mercedes recruit Aldo Costa says the opportunity of renewing his relationship with Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher to challenge their old team Ferrari was more than enough to tempt him back into Formula 1.

Former Ferrari technical director Costa lost his position with the Italian team earlier this season after the disappointing start to its campaign. Mercedes announced on Friday that it had recruited Costa, who had worked with team boss Brawn at Ferrari during the Schumacher era, as its new engineering director.

His appointment came at the same time that ex-Williams, Honda and Red Bull man Geoff Willis was announced as Mercedes' new technology director, and follows the signing of former Renault man Bob Bell as Mercedes GP's technical director.

"I'm enthusiastic. Mercedes is pushing to be successful and that philosophy matches my ambitions and my character," Costa told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Once it was over with Ferrari in early July, I spoke with Brawn and Bob Bell. Just a few words with Ross were enough to find ourselves on the same wavelength as ever.

"Once out of Ferrari for many weeks I didn't want to think of anything, I just took care of my personal stuff.

"Yes, I considered the possibility of doing something outside racing. But then the possibility of returning with a big team like Mercedes drew me back in.

"I will be engineering director, leading the team that will take care of designing and developing the car. I will also follow young technicians. It's an exclusively designing job, I won't go to the track, a bit like I used to do in Ferrari before becoming technical director."

Costa added that he was thrilled to be working with Schumacher again.

"I haven't heard from Schumacher yet, but I will do soon," he said. "No one is as good as him in interpreting a car and its development. He will be fundamental, and I strongly believe in him as a driver too."

The Italian said that though there had been criticisms of his efforts from Ferrari after his departure, he still had fond memories of his time there.

"I don't agree with the accusations made against me," said Costa.

"However I have great memories of Ferrari and all its men, after winning eight constructors' championships and six drivers'.

"Schumacher's first title after a long draught was exhilarating as was [Kimi] Raikkonen's. The biggest regret is the title lost by [Felipe] Massa in 2008 after the finish line at Interlagos. He would have deserved it."

Costa said he would still think of Ferrari as "friends" even as he pushed to ensure Mercedes was ahead on the track.

"These things happen in sport and in life," he said of his departure from Ferrari. "Afterwards enthusiasm returns.

"The idea of challenging Ferrari with a group of former Ferrari men excites me, even though on the other side there will be friends instead of enemies."

Costa also said that results of Ferrari "in the summer (Silverstone) where better because of his advices", while since Spa (the team was in and still is in the middle of nowhere- in my opinion) there where other people modifications.

If that philosophy matches his ambitions and character Mercedes wont win anything. His methods are outdated because he's conservative.

    Berger questions high-profile Mercedes appointments
Monday 3 Oktober at 08:35 : Oct.3 (GMM) Gerhard Berger has criticised the latest high-profile appointments by Mercedes' formula one team.

With Renault's former chief Bob Bell already on board, the Brackley based team announced last Friday that Geoff Willis and Aldo Costa will start their new roles in November and December respectively.

Willis was leading HRT's technical team until very recently, while Italian Costa was ousted by Ferrari earlier this season.

Former F1 winner, joint BMW motor sport director and Toro Rosso co-owner Berger questioned the appointments, which are the latest in a recruitment push by the works Mercedes team.

"It looks to me as though Mercedes are shooting with a shotgun in the hope of landing a hit," the Austrian told Auto Bild Motorsport.

Italy's Autosprint magazine, meanwhile, wondered if it is "credible that, to strengthen his technical staff, Ross Brawn turns to someone considered a loser by Ferrari?

"Frankly, it's not," the report concluded.

    I guess so.
and I'm sorry aldo, but there were many reports after the restructure that silverstone would be the first time they would have any impact.

They a smaller budget than that win-less Japanese team do they?

I think the most hilarious part is that Toyota spends the most $ among all teams, the results do change rapidly, but in the reverse direction of what they targeted. LOL

Except that he is no longer one of our guys anymore. Do you think Costa actually still has a secret dream that he'll rejoin Ferrari one day?
