Big Grin Petrov says Alonso is renta-driver and doesn't feel sorry for Trulli.

“I see no difference between myself and Alonso,” said the Russian, who has moved his lucrative backing from Renault (now Lotus) to the Caterham team for 2012.

His new appointment is controversial, given he has ousted the experienced veteran and former Monaco winner Jarno Trulli, who was the last Italian in F1.

Comparing himself with Alonso, Petrov told La Stampa newspaper: “Everyone knows that he is funded by the money from (Ferrari sponsor) Banco Santander.

“Anyway, you only get to F1 because of talent.”

And Petrov, 27, insists he does not feel sorry for Trulli.

“Life is hard,” the Italian newspaper quotes him as saying.

He admitted that having friends in F1 is impossible, whilst making some comments that will also not endear him to the sport’s Italian followers.

Asked to explain the rare absence of Italians on the grid, Petrov criticised the country’s junior categories and added: “Your drivers lack the passion.”

And as for Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo’s complaints about the dramatic role being played by aerodynamics in F1 at present, he answered: “When you’re not winning, it’s easy to complain.”

Petrov, however, lived in Italy in his past, revealing that his favourite elements of Italian life are “the food and the girls”.

But on the latter, he does not expect to be wheel-to-wheel with the opposite sex any time soon.

“They do not have the physical ability and also are not prepared for the high speeds. But everything in life is possible,” said Petrov.

I hope this season will be the last for russian renta. Go drive bus in Vyborg!

Oh this backmaker could cause us some problems when our drivers will be lapping him. If he tries something, hopefully FIA stewards will interfere.

Btw: "He admitted that having friends in F1 is impossible,..." Yea, that's why Fernando and Robert are great pals, as is Felipe with Michael and Rubens. But I guess it's imposible to make friend with his arogant approach.

In my line of work I have to deal with Super Rich Russians every so often and I can say as a type they are not exactly "friendly" by nature. Still I think it's blown a bit out of context by journos that have nothing to write about until the lights go green. Everyone knows Alonso is on another planet compared to him when it comes to skill lol. I wouldn't take much note of this.

Boy, the way he speaks you'd think he's a multiple world champion already.

He's nothing like Alonso. Luca DM had already express his desire to see Alonso driving for Ferrari for a long time, and it was going to happen with or without Satander.

    Petrov is just plan B

Well, well, someone certainly is full of opinions.

Perhaps he should count himself lucky to be in F1 at all - he's hardly hot property considering he didn't get that Caterham drive until the very last minute.

What's that they say about being nice to people on your way up...?

    Sure.

I was waiting along with a handful of other people for autographs/photographs. There weren't many people, maybe 10 or so with a few onlookers. Every driver aside from Hamilton and Petrov were extremely friendly and accommodating.

Hamilton was swamped - as were a lot of them - but he said "ok ok" and walked off into the paddock after signing about 2 autographs.

Petrov looked grumpy, didn't speak, signed 2 autographs maximum and barged through the group of people patiently waiting. He was immediately quite abrupt and rude to the fans.

On the other side, every other driver was fantastic. Alonso was absolutely swamped - Ferrari parked him near to the paddock entrance so unlike everyone else (bar Rosberg, Schumacher and Button who drove into the paddock and then got out) he was just outside the paddock gates. There were people all around him, excited and he managed to get inside the paddock. His rucksack had fallen off, so he put it back on, before coming back to sign about 30 autographs or more.

The same can be said for the rest too, Vettel signed for about 10 minutes and had tens of photographs taken - even with babies that were dumped on him! Senna, Glock, Massa, Schumacher, Rosberg, Ricciardo etc etc were all accommodating, patient and willing to do what the fans asked. Even team personnel (some of whom weren't recognised by most of the waiting crowd ) were great. Andrea Stella, Rob Smedley, Ross Brawn and even retired F1 drivers like Olivier Panis were good.

Literally just Petrov and Hamilton who were completely rude and un-willing.

I hope he enjoyed his experience on the F1 podium last year because it's something he will never get to experience again.

2 World Championships, 27 wins and 73 podiums vs 1 podium...

i normally give the driver the benefit of the doubt with regards to interviews, but that was pretty bad all round.

    not just the Alonso bit.
