Michael Schumacher in his prime driving his generation of cars would have beaten Vettel hands down. Michael Schumacher in his prime driving 2011 cars 50/50 IMO

    Schumi is a legend.

Vettel is a very good driver, winning WDC's in a dominant car (admittedly Schumi did that in 2002 and especially in 2004) and mostly from pole.

    Schumi is racing.

    Vettel is marketing.

MS is 18 years older than das Fingerkind, he could be his father lol. I guess it's difficult to compare even 2004 to 2011, so many changes in F1. The more interesting comparison is Alonso vs Vettel. So far it's Vettel 1 Alonso 0 in competitive cars.

    Please distinguish "competitive" from "dominating".

Like other members already wrote above, Vettel is a Red-Bull marketing tool for entering on the german-speaking market. Any comparison to MS is not appropriate.

in 2010 Ferrari scored 5 wins including 4 double podiums, McLaren also won 5 races, including 3 1-2 finishes, so Red Bull hardly dominated.

IMO, when Schumi was at his best, he was certainly way better at handling difficult races than Vettel. Schumi does well even when he have to fight hard for position, or in a wet race. I remember people use to say someone needs to remind him the track is wet and slippery during a wet race.

But Vettel is young. He still have time to prove himself if and when he finds himself in such challenging situation and having to fight for the WDC.

I agree. Schumi and alonso clearly a rung above. Then lewis and vettel comes in after that. So i cant see how vettel can be compared with Schumi (even though i am hardly a fan of MS and between the 2 i like vettel more)

There really is no comparison here (imho). Michael won 5 straight, Vettel has won two straight, both with the best teams, and best cars (arguably, during that 5 year stretch, Ferrari had the best team and driver that F1 has ever seen). No comparison really in my opinion.....

Seb in a vastly superior car nearly losing the title to Webber and Alonso, would not say that gives him a edge over Alonso.

The fact that Alonso was leading the title race right up to the last round, despite several costly mistakes along the way, suggests to me that the Ferrari was pretty competitive.

Compared to how many mistakes by Vettel and Red Bull? I think most would agree we were not a real match for Red Bull but their mistakes let us in with a chance.

I though that was pretty obvious. Red Fools had 15 poles in 2010 season, Ferrari had only two.
RB6 was the fastest car, faster on 1,5 sec than F10 sometimes.
This season will be the "Rosso Corsa" season!

I think the years they raced with less than the best car is the better comparison. Michael in 96, 97, 2000 and even earlier with Benetton are the years that really stand out. Those years are much like 2010 for Alonso and perhaps even this year. I have yet to see Vettel drag a dog of a car all season like MS and Alonso have.

in 2010 Red Bull only scored 6 fastest laps in 19 races, that's not a lot for a 'dominant' car.
Alonso was the winner of the 2010 DHL fastest lap award with 5.

FL really does not mean much though, you really think the Ferrari was on par with the Red Bull? never seen anyone ever suggest that.

Even Petrov had Fastest lap in Stambul so...
Poles talk much more about dominancy.

I never said they were on a par. I said the Ferrari was competitive, which means Alonso could conceivably have won WDC. In 2010 The Red Bull wasn't exactly a space rocket compared to Ferrari and McLaren, that's why they were beaten 10 times.

I think you should watch the season again, they were beat because they messed up mostly, Alonso could have won it but he needed a lot of Red Bull failures to be in with a chance. Think Seb even said the 2011 car was not better than the 2010 one but they just done a better job with no mistakes.

Well basically you don't believe the car was quick enough to win WDC, I think it was, unlike last year's Ferrari for example. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

It was a space rocket compared to the Ferrari and Mclaren. They were qualifying the best part of 1 second ahead of anyone else in Hungary and Spain. 15 out of 19 pole positions tells you all you need to know about the raw pace of the car.
