Montreal, 8 June – If Montreal is one of the most popular venues on the F1 calendar, it is partly because the city’s restaurants cater to all tastes and budgets and their menus are packed with delicious dishes. But today at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Scuderia Ferrari only had eyes for their own very substantial technical menu as the team tackled the first day of practice for the Canadian Grand Prix, round 7 of the World Championship.

Just as two weeks ago in Monaco, this weekend, drivers find themselves facing a unique challenge on this exciting circuit that is part race track and part street circuit. So, all those laps in the Principality coming within just a few centimetres of the barriers probably comes in useful in Canada. However, the major difference is that while Monaco has absolutely no quick sections, at least in F1 terms, Canada is a much faster proposition. Here, the cars run in the lowest downforce configuration we have seen so far this season and that necessitates a different aero package. Naturally, these elements have to be evaluated on Friday. Then on top of that come the updates that are part of the Scuderia’s constant development of the F2012. Today, the most significant element was a new exhaust system, which was back-to-backed with that used at the previous two races. As you can tell, the workload is building up and that’s before we even get onto the usual tasks of evaluating tyres and finding the right balance to ensure tyres and brakes, which get a time here, can work at their best.

Both Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were pleased with what they accomplished today and the Brazilian actually described it as his best Friday of the year. Perhaps that’s not surprising, as he finished the day third fastest, just one tenth of a second slower than his Spanish team-mate, who in turn was a miniscule 0.054s off the pace of the fastest man today, Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren. Sebastian Vettel was fourth for Red Bull, with Paul di Resta next up for Force India while Kamui Kobayashi completed the top six in the Ferrari-powered Sauber. Even if it’s traditional to dismiss Friday’s lap times, it is a good start in terms of pace, while when it comes to reliability, Fernando completed 70 laps, which is exactly the same as Sunday’s race distance and, running a different programme, Felipe did 56. The rain tried to affect the morning session but failed, while this afternoon, a ferocious storm hit the track, thankfully five minutes after the end of the session. Forecasters reckon we have now seen the last of the rain for the weekend, with a hot race day in prospect.

As Pat Fry mentioned, the temperature plays a big role and I expect the order to change today if its warmer.

Marko is quiet confident of having his both cars in first the two rows of the grid on Saturday. To be honest, I think Pole will be difficult, expect P3-P4 for Alonso & P6 for Massa & both will improve on Sunday :)

Hot weather benefits lotus and Rb
    colder benefits Mercedes
Hamilton also said that he expects it to be a one stop race, as his tyres where lasting 30 laps (cool conditions)..
If it stays cool that would probably mean the undercut wont work and who ever does those 2 extra laps will gain places due to tyre warm up issues..
Im sure ferrari learnt their lesson at Monaco GP.. This will give advantages to us, we seem to look after the tyres better than rb and mclaren..
If it warms up, well who knows? Lotus will be good i guess, we dont know where that leaves us after the revised exhaust positions..

There is nothing special about our race pace. -> FP2 lap times
Above that Ferrari ran less laps in race sim mode than the others at the end of the session. I still think to qualify on the first row would be a little miracle. This circuit is in theory not F2012 friendly, we were told that top speed and traction in and out of slow and medium speed corners was the main weakness of the car.

Looking in good shape, Think there is a little bit more we can get from the car for quali, Pole is not out the question, I would still keep a eye on RB, Race pace is very good imo, Some long runs we did the pace was there and tyres held on, the race is on....

I just placed a bet of 50 euro on Alonso at betfair.. 7.8 to 1 is not bad. And I have a really good feeling bout this.

Let's see what happens when the chequered flag falls;)

Good post there mate..and you will most likely be right, staying on the the race pace subject that i forgot to note down on my post last night that ferrari is the only car consistently got the fastest race pace out there, right from the start with full fuel and this is huge advantage for our team. What i've notice so far is for mecleren if its hot on Sunday like Pat Fry has come out and say, then Lewis will be dreaming of just doing a 1 stop, but if it's cool temp then he might be correct, but one thing i want to point out for mecleren car's during the hot races is they seem to struggle all thru the whole race, might recover back a little towards the end when cars get's lighter and same goes to mecedes..But for Lotus they are the same as mecleren but opposite temps, but there speed for them always comes towards the end when they are close to come in to pit, same thing when they put on new tyres. But on very hot temps they are very fast, most likely the fastest car on race pace out there.
Then redbull they are a pit different to the others, which is very interesting, on cool weather there race pace speed for them comes to them on the second part of the race towards the end and on the hot day its the same towards the end as well. This is why the f2012 to me will be the winner this year, because on cool, wet, warm temps we are very fast on race pace. The only one i'm not so sure about is very hot conditions. But remember guys alot of my opinions are made only on this last six races, (with old spec) i always think back..what would be the outcome if our car was firstly introduce with this new canada spec car on race 1. We would have been running away with both championships points. Today i wont rule out pole for either one of the boys, if not second row is still winnable. Glad to see old Massa up there, good on him...good luck to the boys and the team. Go Nando.

so the question is ... where is Renault? I don't see them being that far back as we draw nearer to qualifying .. maybe they just didn't bother for times yday, i'd watch out for them still.

Gené: When I got in the garage the aerodynamicists had a big smile as the exhauts worked well and you can only know when you test it on track.
