Vettel: Fernando was fastest because he had the best equipment

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel insists that Ferrari has the best car on the 2012 Formula One grid, and ‘laughed’ at Fernando Alonso and claims that he is leading the world championship despite not having the best car.
In an interview with journalists from O Estado de S.Paulo (Brazil), Corriere della Sera (Italy) and Auto Hebdo (France), referring to last weekend’s German grand prix, Vettel said: “Fernando was the fastest because he had the best equipment. At the moment, Ferrari is the best. So what I need to do is to be the most consistent.

“They [Ferrari] had a difficult start to the year, but we can see now where they are. They are the most consistent in all conditions: rain, dry, change of grip from the circuit, cold, hot…
“Ferrari has the best package at the moment; they’re fast and reliable. At Hockenheim they kept us and McLaren behind. This is a fact, not my interpretation,” the German insisted.

Vettel denied that part of Alonso’s advantage is that his teammate, Felipe Massa, is entirely subservient, rather than taking points from one another as do the teammates at Red Bull and McLaren.
“It’s not good for a racing team to have one driver fighting for wins and the other with significantly lower results,” he insisted. “From the outside we cannot understand the reasons that Felipe is not able to show his natural speed, because he is very fast.”

“People forget that if his (Massa’s) engine had not broken here (in Hungary) in 2008, he would have won the title. Now he’s miles away from the top of championship, even though the car is working well.

“I don’t understand that,” added Vettel.
It is on that final point – the driver equality question at Ferrari – that Vettel has some doubt about whether he wants to be with the famous Italian team.

Asked if he would accept being Alonso’s teammate at Ferrari, he answered: “I don’t know. I hear so much about his contract with Ferrari that it makes me think about it. It depends on the situation.”

“I am not afraid of fighting with Fernando at the same team, because that’s good for the team, good for you. It’s much better than having a teammate who is slower,” concluded Vettel.

He is right Alonso did keep them behind, by being a top quality driver and knowing turn 6 was their only chance. Did Seb say Red Bull had the fastest car when Webber won at Silverstone...I very much doubt it? another race Alonso would have kept them behind if not for the DRS zone....

Beat me to it, Greig. I suppose those last two championships were all his doing.

Maybe for Vettel its just hard to imagine that some drivers can win races without having a car being 2 seconds a lap faster than all others, starting from pole.

I suppose it is possible that he wasn't referring to Alonso's car...

Vettel is under too much pressure. Too many people thought it always would be like 2011 eternally, did he get that impression too? Obviously the F2012 is a good car now but Alonso is making the difference in many circumstances. I think there is some bitterness in his words.

It must be a devastating discovery to Vettel that in rather equal cars he has no chance whatsoever against Fernando.........

I don't agree with your opinion.
Vettel thinks his Red Bull was faster than Alonso's Ferrari in Germany.
He said that he could catch the Ferrari but his car was than disturbed by the Ferrari's wake and could not make the move to try and overtake.
I was expecting Lewis or Button to say like wise but they did'nt!!! Hope it's true.

After the German GP he said this to German media: "On the open road I could have run faster than Fernando. But once I was in the slipstream of the Ferrari came, my car was restless. why I could never touch it."

Now he's saying that we have the fastest car? What nonsense. I think he's in denial, unable to accept that even with an illegal car he can't beat Fernando. There may also be some jealousy, because in 2011 he didn't receive anywhere near the amount of praise that Fernando is currently receiving.

Newey should receive most of the praise. He's pretty much the reason they have won the last two championships.

too early to say what type of driver he will become, FA is been praised because Ferrari was not expected to win many races this year or defo not fight for the title. FA would not be praised much either if his car was a second faster than everyone else like Vettel last year. FA is been praised because he is putting the car in positions on the grid no one expected.

I am going to wait til after Hungary to see if Vettel is playing mind games with us, tell everyone we are favourites, our title to lose etc,try to unsettle us, sunday will tell if the engine maps really meant something.

One thing to note, Alonso drove a very smart race and used lapped cars to activate the DRS at least twice to pull away from the cars behind who also had DRS on because they were within 1 second of Alonso.
