Singapore: practice time relevance
No calculations this time...
Is there any relationship between practice times, qualifying times, and podium results?
Well, last year the top 5 finishers were pretty much the top 5 at all times.
For 2 of the years, practice 1 results predicted the qualifying group quite well, and for the other 2 years, it was not clear until practice 3.
The winner is from pole in all of the non-crashgate years, while 2nd and 3rd podium has some starting flexibility.
Another good qualifying predictor is a driver staying in the top 5 of both practice 1 and practice 2.
2011:
Podium: 1-Vet, 2-But, 3-Web, 4-Alo, 5-Ham
Qualify: 1-Vet, 2-Web, 3-But, 4-Ham, 5-Alo
Pract3: 1-Web, 2-But, 3-Vet, 4-Alo, 5-Ham
Pract2: 1-Vet, 2-Alo, 3-Ham, 5-Web, 10-But
Pract1: 1-Ham, 2-Vet, 3-Web, 4-Alo, 5-But
2010:
Podium: 1-Alo, 2-Vet, 3-Web, dnf-Ham
Qualify: 1-Alo, 2-Vet, 3-Ham, 5-Web
Pract3: 1-Vet, 2-Alo, 3-Ham, 6-Web
Pract2: 1-Vet, 2-Web, 3-But, 4-Alo, 5-Ham
Pract1: 1-Web, 2-MSc, 3-Sut, 4-Vet, 11-Alo, 18-Ham
2009:
Podium: 1-Ham, 2-Glo, 3-Alo, 4-Vet, 11-Ros
Qualify: 1-Ham, 2-Vet, 3-Ros, 6-Glo, 7-Alo
Pract3: 1-Ham, 2-Vet, 3-Ros, 8-Glo, 15-Alo
Pract2: 1-Vet, 2-Alo, 3-Kov, 7-Ros, 8-Glo, 9-Ham
Pract1: 1-Bar, 2-But, 3-Web, 4-Alo, 5-Vet, 7-Ham, 11-Ros, 15-Glo
2008:
Podium: ok, ok, ok.
Qualify: 1-Mas, 2-Ham, 3-Rai, 15-Alo (did not set a time)
Pract3: 1-Alo, 2-Ham, 3-Mas, 17-Rai
Pract2: 1-Alo, 2-Ham, 3-Mas, 7-Rai
Pract1: 1-Ham, 2-Mas, 3-Rai, 7-Alo

ALO stats in this track are fantastic, even if you remove the crashgate win.

Yeah should be good odds for us given Fernando's record at Singapore and with the updated car. Felipe's shown he's no slouch around there either. Here's to hoping for a dominant weekend for Ferrari.

OK,
Practice 1, the top 6:
Vet, Ham, But, Alo, Mal, Web
So if previous races are useful predictors:
- if the same 6 are at the top of practice 2, then 1 of them will win.
- if there is a different group in the top 6, then practice 3 will be the better predictor.

Hmmm. 30 minutes into practice #2, and the same 6 are at the top again.
Let's see if this holds up. The good news would be that Alo is in that group at this time.

Ok, it's the the top 5 drivers from practice 2 who were in the top 6 in practice 1.
This looks similar to 2008, and 2011.
This is the first year that the same driver was 1st in both practice 1 and practice 2.
These 5 drivers were the top 5 in 2011 practice 1, practice 3, qualifying, and finishing.
So highly likely the podium will come from Vet, But, Alo, Web, or Ham.
