    F1 Wheelbases/Tracks

    Hi all!

Don't know if some of you guys will remember the 2007/08 seasons where there were a lot of talks about the Ferrari and McMower wheelbase
and the different handling and performance characteristics each (long / short) gives to a race car...?

Can anyone maybe tell where those data about different teams using different wheelbases were obtained?

f1technical.net is always a good place to start. Though, some details aren't released or not available for various cars. For example, I can't find the wheelbase of the MP4-22 anywhere (yet).

The F2007 wheelbase was 3135 mm and I seem to remember the McLaren being around 20-30cm shorter.

Renault, Toyota, BMW and Honda all kept the same wheelbase from 2006 to 2007. It's likely that McLaren did that as well.

    2006 - 2007 Wheelbases

    Ferrari - 3050 - 3135 (+85mm)
    Renault - 3100mm
    Toyota - 3090mm
    BMW - 3110mm
    Honda - 3140mm

Do you think these wheelbases are design optimums to the various team philosophies?
Or are they adapted to the various rule changes?

Just to the teams philosophies. Ferrari changed the 2007 wheelbase by so much to get better weight distribution on the car and also for some aerodynamic benefits. I don't think it should ever have been quite as long as it was, we struggled so much around Monaco because of it.

A Long wheel base is more stable under braking and acceleration, that is the car is less likely to squirm (be loose ) under those conditions. Penalty is under steer though.

Even longer wheel bases are more noticeable on Indy cars and better suited to oval racing.

A short wheel base makes for a more nimble car able to turn in a smaller radius. draw back is it can be loose under braking and acceleration, and possible over steer.

A well tamed short wheel base can be agile and fast, but not as stable. Its all a matter of compromise and balance.
Its all in the name - FERRARI
