Seb: Most deserving driver will win title

Only 10 points separate Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso with only two races left in the 2012 campaign.

With the contest for the title so tight, it is anybody's guess who will walk away with the Drivers' Championship once the chequered flag comes down at the Brazilian GP.

Vettel, who has won four of the last five races, is confident the driver who deserves it most will emerge victorious.

"Of course the last races we had were very good for us, to put it mildly," he told the official Formula One website.

"They have helped us a lot. If you look at the whole season with 20 races, you do have incidences that you don't like to have, you probably have some retirements due to technical problems. We had those - and hopefully we have now passed this phase.

"It is very hard to run so many races without incidents. It is not something that is part of your calculation, but you have to be prepared when it hits you not to stand there with eyes wide open. (laughs).

"If you look at the races we've done so far I think Fernando's and my DNF's or calamities are equal. I still believe that the driver who deserves it most will be Champion. No doubt we are in a very good position now and I hope we do well until the very end to make sure that we deserve the glory."

Alonso sported a 42-point lead over Vettel at one stage, but a few retirements coupled with the Red Bull driver's hot streak saw that advantage disappear.

Defending Champion Vettel admits the fact that so many drivers are challenging for race wins and podiums have had a major impact on how things have panned out.

"With everyone being very close to each other, with the performance of the cars being very equal, you might have a good car but finish only seventh," he said.

"The next race your car is quite similar and you might win and the guy who won a fortnight ago is not able to do better than fifth or sixth. This is indeed very different to previous years when you knew that when the car felt good and had good pace you might still finish on the podium - even if someone else was quicker - as there have only been a handful of guys fighting it out.

"This year, well, not everybody can win, but the circle of suspects has definitely widened."

If that driver's name is going to be Fernando Alonso, then yes, the most deserving driver wins the title indeed.

Poor kid, the only reason he is saying that is because almost everyone is saying that Alonso deserves it more because his driving plus car disadvantage sometimes.

He talks as if he and Alonso are on equal points and and have equal cars. Get real Seb, Alonso deserves this title way more than you!

So if we go by this then, good job Alonso, you just got yourself a 3rd world title!! Really annoys me how people can even compare seb and alonso, even seb and hamilton!! All the seb fans will be going hell to leather to justify how seb can pass in a race with his abu dhabi gp....wowwww, 2 safety cars, 3 cars who move out of the way, and ohhhhh wait, the fastest car and the cherry on top, A RACE SETUP....Yh, the guys a god!

OHHH get real Sebestian you are driving the fastest car bloody idiot.during the mid season 2012 you were no where in the Championship and then came your DDRS equipped RB8 and you collect 115 points(4x25+1x15) vs Fernando's 66 points(1x15+1x0+1x15+2x18) that has made the difference.Alonso has made no mistakes this year(thank GOD and i pray it continues like this) and has been more consistent. If you genuinely believe the most deserving driver will win the title than Alonso will win hopefully and he will hopefully.
Anything can still happen in f1 remember 2010 Alonso had 15 points lead over Vettel going to Abu Dhabi and then redbull used webber's car as bait and pitted him and ferrari followed, this allowed vettel to finish ahead of Alonso in WDC by 4 points....IT AINT OVER TILL ITS OVER.......

1 DNF for vettel and everything will come to Alonso.I pray and hope Alonso wins.as for the aero test reports ferrari will downplay it more and more so that it results dont come than they feel less bad.I still think Alonso will win this championship this year INSHALLAH(will GOD's will and help)

it would be so great if fernando's title comes like in 2007, after the season felipe had, i am positive that he can get second in interlagos, he always does great there, would be amazing if he can be that helpful to the championship like he did for kimi and if we are lucky fernando first, felipe second that would be a dream come true in interlagos.

interlagos should ALWAYS be the closing GP, it is never boring.

he has stated the obvious and thus,
Alonso should win and vettel does not deserve this title at all...even Hamilton deserves more than him!!
and if vettel had car that Alonso has (in Quali!) he would be fighting with saubers and force india's!! (not every race is a lottery like last one at Abu Dhabi!)

US Grand Prix COTA: IMO, it will come down to who is the best driver this weekend. This is a new track, no one will have the edge over anyone. SO, best driver (one who makes fewest mistakes) will take the checkered flag. For Ferrari, quali will be everything! If Alonso can out qualify Vettel, the WDC, will be his. If not, Alonso will need devine intervetion to beat a faater car. AND how so disappointed that the Grand Prix in New Jersey has been moved to 2014! I lived in that town for over 25 years and drove those roads that are proosed for the race countless times. I probably know that future circuit better that any of the drivers!!!LOL

These days drivers could prepare for new circuit through simulations. The team could even work on choosing the optimal setup based on simulation results (as Newey mentioned how their simulation tells them that a high downforce setup is the fastest way of going around Abu Dhabi).

I don't think a new track is going to take away the advantage of having a fast car.

Just because this is a new track that does not make for an equalizer for the cars. Quite to the contrary; just like every track, it will favor the cars that suit it the most. Already we have reports that it 's a McLaren/RBR track but that remains to be seen, also we don't know what/if Ferrari has a trick to show (ie. updates that actually work).

Yes, the driver is a factor in F1, but only if the cars perform closely. If there's a big margin between the two leaders, sorry but ...

At any rate, Vettel's statement, I believe has everything to do with mind games , rather than any shred of seriousness. I doubt he believes what he says...

    Thumbs down

The most deserving driver will win ... I don't think so . Vettel with the car he has will most likely win but he will not be a deserving winner .... no way

I honestly think that who ever wins will deserve it.
I also think Michael and Ferrari deserved the 5 world championships we won back then, even when we had a superior car.

It's a sport. RedBull, has this year made a better car, and yet, we are still able to beat them from time to time.
Bringing up comments from Jacques Villeneuve, just makes me laugh
Lets enjoy the rest of the season.
