Could it be for the radiators? The side pods are smaller and so are the air inlets, so maybe extra cooling.
Where a lot of technicians thought Ferrari had inclined radiators, they seem to be still vertical (so maybe extra cooling isn't necessary) i posted a picture of the Saubers radiators, they still have almost vertical radiators, incredible with such small side pods. Here is the picture again.

Dr Ferdinand Porsche:" Nuvolari is the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future".
Enzo Ferrari once drove with him and recalled even on bends "he never took his foot from the accelerator".
With that newly open inlet below nose, F138 looks like a F16 fighter plane!
That would be very good news, if true.
I saw some pictures with the cars on the red painted Pirellis, is that not the supersoft? Unless they were mixed with some pics of 2012 I think it is.
Anyway, it's too early to judge any car but the F138 didn't look too bad in Jerez. I believe the car is far from where it will be in Australia but it could be the same for many other teams. Next test sessions will be very important to judge how things are going. Some changes and new parts will hopefully bring more speed and realiability, less cooling problems, etc.
SuperSofts have red color on them , Hards have orange color on them!
There could be confusion!
From James Allen
I remember last year he had nothing good to say about F2012!!So now to keep saying that we are up there to the top just fills me with optimism!!!!The Ferrari set the fastest time of the four day test in Jerez, with Felipe Massa dipping into the 1m 17s on Day 3. The new Ferrari is a good step forward from last year’s car and clearly is not riddled with problems, as last year’s was on its debut. This meant that Ferrari was able to crack on with testing development parts from as early as Day 2. They ran different exhausts, floor, diffuser and front wing in Jerez and many new things are no doubt planned for the Barcelona tests.
The Ferrari is using a DRS booster system using a Fluidic Switch, which channels air flow above a certain speed to increase the drag reduction system. It’s a difficult thing to get working right on a race track, but could be a useful gain if they nail it. Most of the top teams will probably evolve one as the year goes on.
It looks like this innovation could be the first “must-have” technology gizmo of the 2013 season.
The goal for Ferrari was to start the season with a car that is at or close to the pace of the front runner, as that will provide a platform for Fernando Alonso’s relentless consistency to mount a title campaign

Guys have we any pics of this device, because i for one dont have a clue what this is and is very interestin and excited to know what it is, i didnt see any channels feeding the DRS slot gap! Please help!!!!
Be pretty much same sort system (but not either side of the airbox) that Lotus tested last year at Spa but didnt race. I have not seen any pictures of it in the tests last week, mind you, the hole under the nose that Pedro ran maybe for that
But, didnt really notice any device on the car looking like passive DRS the day Felipe set that time...(could be wrong
)
Im sure we will see it on the car soon.

CAVALLINO RAMPANTE PER SEMPRE
Finally I think we have a good car this year. So have McLaren, Lotus and RB, but that's okay, we want to see real racing.
This year Ferrari will be there right from the beginning - and they will be there at the end.
The fastest in the first test and the fastest at the end of the season!
Forza Ferrari!
You can run like the wind, but you'll never outrun the Prancing Horse
Apparently the big air inlet under the nose of De La Rosa's car is for driver cooling and boundary layer removal, maybe someone can explain, 'cause i have no idea what that means.
Dr Ferdinand Porsche:" Nuvolari is the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future".
Enzo Ferrari once drove with him and recalled even on bends "he never took his foot from the accelerator".
Boundary layer is a layer of air that sticks to a surface in a tunnel it makes the tunnel smaller for air to pass through a bit like gunge in a sink pipe. This scoop is alleged to take this layer from under the nose which would allow air to pass more freely under the nose. Although a blockage in itsrlf its benefit must outway this and Ferrari have all the aero analysis so must work. Sauber do it with slot in this area passing air to top of the nose but I guess if you double it up for driver cooling as well you end up with this type of shape.
My excitement continues to build. Can't wait to see how things go down in Australia when the lights go out! Forza Ferrari, Felipe, e Fernando!
Disappointed Since 2010
Testing is to find a "Baseline" as a "Datum" to start from. All things will be relative to this starting point. Ferrari have a well evolved race car and if the Data is valid and correlated properly, then the Ferrari Team will advance! It is to early to be certain but early indicators are that the behavior of the Race Car is at the very least, much closer to the front then last year.
Ciao,
Forza Ferrari!

Any had published a youtube video with a lot of internal details of F138..
@Pirelli_Media
Fastest time yesterday was set by Jenson Button on the new orange hard compound. Webber's fastest time was set on the white medium.
@Pirelli_Media
We had some questions on the supersoft. Pirelli chose 20 sets of tyres per team (all the same), none of which was a supersoft.
Each team could then chose a further 15 sets, some of which may have been a supersoft but that's not for us to comment. All clear now?

Massa raised a very good point, that the time set by Button was during the early part of testing when the track is still green and dusty, no rubber laid down yet. I think that's why Massa is saying that Button pace was impressive.
Its hard to compare the times as they were set in different condition. I think both McLaren and Ferrari will be strong along with Red Bull. Certainly don't expect Ferrari to be far ahead of others, but we don't need that to win.![]()
I'm really happy to see us having so many ideas on the car: pull-rod, rear wing with odd vertical slots, slimmest rear, DRS booster system using a Fluidic Switch, slot under the front nose for cooling and maby something more, the work we have done inside the car with the KERS package, one of the if not THE highest front of the car. In the last two years, i have to say, we have done a lot of good inovative work on the car. Who knows, maby if last year the acer exhaust would have worked as we planned, we could have been dominant. It was an inovative idea, many people said that the car looked really interesting and full of potential and good ideas, though it really backfired and gave us lots of problems with the rear for the whole season. Fingers crossed that this year our ideas work as we planned.
A bit off topic but i was looking around youtube and i fell on to this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb11QBMSe3c
ooohhh how great will be to live moments like this again!!!!!
FERRARI FOR EVER !!!!!!!
i think this year we appear to be trying to innovate new parts, but last year we were criticised by many pros for being too conservative (including Adrian Newey). I can recall reading an article whereby even Stefano agreed with this and decided to go more 'aggressive' this year.
I thought that was 2011. Last year Ferrari had pull rod front suspension. radiator for gearbox cooling ontop of the gearbox and acer ducts. It was a huge departure in critical areas from the accepted norm. Some said difference for difference sake but certainly not conservative.
watching some video clips from testing at jerez
it seems the down shifting of the f138 sounds funny compared to other cars sound like something is breaking when down shifting.
i don't know, maybe it is just me.
Hell would have broken loose
You are right, I am a year behind!
