Any fresh news about 2014 engine?
Any fresh news about 2014 engine?
It is actually quite worrying. Ferrari have the cheapest 2014 engines available on the grid and yet I do not know of any teams that are using their engines...
They have lost Torro Rosso and I don't know whether Sauber will be committing to them either. (edit - Sauber confirmed and Marussia rumoured to sign shortly)
Given that the customer teams will no doubt know some technical info about all the units (Renault, Merc and Ferrari) it is quite a concern for me that Ferrari's unit is being ranked as the least favoured by the bigger teams. I come to this conclusion as Ferrari's unit is the cheapest and they seem to be struggling to find decent customers.
Merc's unit is widely regarded as the best unit out there but little has been said about Renault and Ferrari; however Renault have a lot of interest in their very expensive units.

if the over all weight of the car gets increased, how about the tyre dimensions, need not say they should be bigger?? Pirelli tyres, gosh scares me!!!
That post got a chortle Nick. Noticed a report of Jeans supporting him though. Wonder (besides the fact of F1 becoming more affordable) what F1 life for all involved would become?
"What I don't quite understand is how Massa gets the lap times he does when he so often misses the apexes of the corners. What really does impress me is the fact that he displays a determination not to be counted out, or overlooked, when it comes to fighting for the world championship." Damon Hill.
Wonder if Ferrari & any of the other teams are considering to finally start a break-away series? It seems nonsense, FIA said they were doing it to make it affordable & bring more teams in. Seems to me it's way more cost & less interest? I can only wonder at the minds behind it and the reasoning behind it, further why the manufacturers are falling in line & supporting the logic.

Could not agree with you more! F1 needs a whole new governing structure. The FIA is a joke, and has been for a long time.
Renault has unveiled its 2014 turbocharged Formula 1 engine at the Paris airshow.
The firm has named it the Energy F1, as it is Renault's first design for the sport's new turbocharged, energy-recovery technology era.
Four-time world champion turned Renault ambassador Alain Prost said: "From 2014 we will bring engines to the fore and redress the balance in F1. An engine is the heart of a car, from next year it returns to the heart of our sport."

Renault already has a deal in place to continue supplying its title-winning works partner Red Bull next year, as well as adding RBR's sister team Toro Rosso, which has so far used Ferrari power.
The French firm will continue to power Caterham, with which it has partnered for road car projects.
Williams is parting company with Renault to run Mercedes engines, and current Renault squad Lotus's 2014 power unit plans have yet to be announced.

Honestly? It sounds baaaad. It's dull, interchangable with sounds of road cars engines (or LeMans LMP stuff)... I am feeling so low about F1 after today. Absolute travesty about Mercedes's secret test, revealing that 2014 engines will sound worse than what what we ever had... What's the point in watching F1 please? I can't find any.![]()

The sport isn't all about the sound. It's drama, it's passion, the technical race that goes on that's won by the greatest minds, and the race between the drivers where in the end, a champion emerges. It's the unique feeling when the drivers stand next to each other on the grid, waiting for the lights to go, that no other sport brings. Find strength in these thingsThe sport has been in these kind of situations (engine and testgate wise), it's survived, and will survive again.
Here's a lil help with the reasoning to watch (run out of the room at 3:46):

It seems the FIA hates speed. We might as well bring the LMP1 cars in F1 and be done with it. And to think these cars used to have 1000 horsepower...
That's where my other problems lies. How can I cheer for someone playing and fighting fair, when those cheeting are getting away with it and know, that this may be happening all the time and that titles were won thanks to this... And where is that technical race with those engines? How can I belive we are pushing the limits, when we've got enhines sounding like a land mower with so much restrictions to disallow them to be at least as powerfull as today's V8s?

OH MY GOD ITS SOUNDS TERRIBLE!!! I GET BETTER SOUND FROM MY TV THERE IS NO POINT GOING TO WATCH THE EXCITEMENT ANYMORE!!!!
Some odd cases like Mercedes pop up time to time, but can't really say that in the last decade, i could recall a team that cheats, winning a championship. RedBull case with the engine mapping, blowing the diffusor is something i'd call being smart. I mean, if you call that cheating, any technical development in a way is bending the rulles, pushing the limits, even if it's a hole under the nose, or a hole in the back. If you made a car that was strickly like the rules said, without any bending or exploiting holes of the regulations, in the end, you'd end up with a caterham.
About the engine technical race. Like in the previous post, it's still only the sound. Might sound terrible, but it's gonna be the thing that teams will be putting the most effort in the upcoming season, trying to get more HP out of the fuel they'll be carrying, with making the engine last while doing so. The next season will probably have more technical work on the engine, than in the past couple of decades, since we got a rather unique situation, with now, the engine being integrated with KERS and everything else.
If people think that the sport is worth watching because of the sound, then yeah, they should quit, since they are missing the whole point of it. And besides, i can't make myself say it sounds bad, untill i see it revving on the grid, and going the long straight, because so far, what i've heard in these categories, is that it sound monstrous.
Well, in my personal opinion, seeing at what time we live in, that's rather highly unlikely. With the accessible video, photographic archives, it's almost always found out. Mercedes did everything they could to hide it, starting with the drivers twittering being elsewhere, and the team having the track closed, and finishing with different uniformes and helmets, it's been found out rather easily. Can't recall any technical inovations that weren't cleared up in a month or two. Well, that's the way i see it. It depends if you accept the idea, that it's possible to hide anything these days, which i think is darn hard, close to impossible to do.
Ferrari engine will sound a lot better!![]()
I personally still am not a fan of further downgrading the capacity of F1 engines. I feel that the engines have taken a slightly backseat in recent years with emphasis purely on aero only (in terms of performance). In terms of entertainment for the fans, they are still important, the V8 still make a very unique sound that you know it's F1 and not any other car, and it really make a difference for those who are there to witness these loud beast roaring around the track.
Any reduction in the cylinders and rpm will only make the F1 car engine sound less spectacular.
V6 sounds like a scooter in the guitar video![]()
Well, at least it still makes sound. It could have been worse and have electric-only.
God, I love the sound of that evil V10.
yes indeed....that was by far teh best sounding engine (apart the V12's we used to have) and sadly, i dont' think we're ever gonna have a sound like the v10's, EVER....it took me a bit of time to like the idea of even having V8's....but now with this v6 thing...Formula one cars will NEVER sound the same...
oh well, it was all good while it lasted....
Forza Ferrari SEMPRE!!!
I was witness to GREAT sound of Ferrari's V12 back in 1995. Music to the ears. Ehhhh those were the days....
I have been a F1 fan since the 1960s. I have heard engines with 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cylinders; in-line, flat and V; normally aspirated or turbocharged. For years it was common to have 3 verities of engines on the track at the same time. You could hear, and recognize, a Ferrari V-12 coming long before you could see it. The mix of engines was a symphony when compared to the one instrument bands we have been listening to for the past decade plus.
I think it is a shame to make the engine formula so specific. The sport is poorer for many different reasons, including the symphony of sound and the freedom to innovate which F1 used to showcase.
I've mentioned it before but the sound of the 70s Matra V12 was incredible, especially on the straight at Monza, as well as the V12 Ferrari of course, so much better than any Cosworth V8. Heavenly sounds indeed and never to be repeated.
