    The Contributions of Felipe Massa

Since many posters FREQUENTLY ask, I thought it was about time to create a thread listing Felipe's contributions since 2008. Lets keep it to one per poster with no repeats so we can see just how many we can get.

I'll start us off with the team breaking his gearbox seal in Texas to give Fernando a grid advantage last season.

Well for me, the most important thing is that Massa is part of Ferrari F1 team, and he has carried out his responsibility as a driver very well, which I think is the most important contribution any driver can bring to a team. Ultimately, all the wins, the team strategy, the testing, simulator hours, development feedback, etc etc etc... they all lead to that single responsibility as a driver and Massa did his part very well.

Massa have proven that he is a capable driver worthy of a seat in a top team, who happens to be in Ferrari at a time where the team is struggling through the rapid changes brought into F1 in recent years. Just like Alonso, I don't know if Massa will ever win a title with Ferrari, but I think many Ferrari fans will remember both drivers as the ones who played an important part in keeping Ferrari among the top team during these tougher years. Ferrari is going through a tough time, and I would say without both drivers, Ferrari may not be able to achieve what we had so far. That's how crucial Massa's role is.

Moving over at the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix in order to allow Kimi to win the race and the championship.

It was more than just giving up one win for Felipe. It would have made for 3 Brazilian Grand Prix wins in a row, as he won again in 2008. No other driver, not even Senna has won the Brazilian GP 3 times in a row, that would have been big for Felipe.

Don't play dumb with me. I'm better at it than you are.

Hockenheim 2010? not really voluntary but in the end he followed the interests of the team ...
"If I was driving for Red Bull [from 2008] probably I would have more championships, but because they were dominating between 2010 and 2014 probably I would never have driven for Ferrari. I am very happy and very proud to drive for Ferrari, all my time there.

I've only been following the sport closely since 2010 with some attention to up to few years before that so don't know too much about Massa before that.

What I can say is that he has the fighting spirit and he has been an excellent team player. He is a good addition to the team.

I'm a Ferrari fan through and through, and haven't been a big fan of any one specific driver since Schumacher left from Ferrari, so trust me when I say that I'm not overly biased towards Felipe. But being a Ferrari fan also means supporting it's drivers and standing by them through good times and bad times, not constantly bashing them. I'm not exactly happy with Felipe's recent results either, but I also know that most of these poor results aren't entirely his fault and I know what he's capabilities are as a racing driver when he's in form. As long as Ferrari keeps him as their driver, we should support him during his difficult times... well at least that's what I think. Besides, what do you get out of bashing him anyway? It's exercising in futility if you ask me. You accomplish nothing by doing so, besides making yourself look bad.

Many fans here are still " Rubenized ! " Hate and bash the the #2 guy. Born and raised in Rubensville IMO only adds to the dislike.

Almost cost him his life driving for Ferrari, came back stronger. Unfortunately for him he was paired against world’s best driver. Yes he is not the best, yes he struggles at times but things that are guaranteed out of Felipe are 100% commitment & team spirit.

I am rather neutral toward Felipe. I dont think he is bad and i dont think he is the best. Having said that, he is a superb team player. I can never forget the way he covered alonso in the brazilian GP 2012. I remember watching that race and thinking, this guy is unbelievable the way he is defending his team mate. Just amazing!

I think that was his best ever race, personally.

Felipe can be brilliant on his day, similarly he can be a disaster, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground with him - it would be better for my central nervous system if he was less of a nutcase but that's what made me a fan. And not many, if any at ALL would have taken the gearbox 'incident' in Austin so well (outwardly anyway). He wears his heart on his sleeve and to me that's what a Ferrari driver should do.

Well it's difficult just to put one incident,it would not be justice to massa!!
Let's look at it in a different way: from 2007-2009 he partnered Kimi
Massa beat Kimi in qualifying fair and square 25-19
He had more wins than him9-8 fact!
Life threatening injury since 2009 hungary kept him out the rest of the season
Came strongly in 2010,but the German GP,whatever team orders he got, just dented his confidence!!! I honestly believe if he would have been left to race without team orders the stats would have been different from then upto now!! And that's the sad truth in my humble opinion...

Yea, you're right Suzie, the 2012 Brazilian GP was a stunning performance from Felipe indeed. But in my opinion his best ever race was at the 2008 Brazilian GP. He didn't put a foot wrong there and while under immense pressure and in tricky conditions he took pole to flag win in style like a true champion, which he definitely should've been after that race. That was just a perfect race from him, with a very unfortunate ending.

Here's one of the greatest moment in Felipe's career:
Absolutely brilliant move...simply amazing! Go Felipe!

We need / pray / want / wish Felipe to be consistent in keeping it together and bring the car home. Fast and smart = good points haul / good for the confidence. Fast and inconsistent = bad for the confidence and few points if any. The WCC is all that he should be focused on!!!!! Suppose its easier said than done.

    A bit offtopic, but...

While Luca is keeping the front up, it is vital for Felipe to bring the car to bring in points from next 3 or so races. If he finish on the podium, great, but even 4th to 6th is ok and should secure him the seat for next year as I doubt they want to change the driver lineup when so much other things change. On long term, I believe 2014 will be the last year for him, about no matter what happens - short of a championship win as Ferrari needs to start breaking in a new #2 driver to the team. But next year should be secure unless he does abysmally in the last 10 races. And I also believe they will announce his contract extension in one of the last three races, not sooner.

Very high chances I would say. Felipe is good for a team going into an unknown 2014.

Felipe is a very good driver, but he isn't consistent, never has been, there is good and bad, nothing in between.. Fernando is super consistent and good, sometimes Felipe is better, but sometimes he's not.. With a good car, Felipe can do a good job, but when the car is not there, he struggle's more than Fernando because of lack of consistency.. I think Fernando can drive any car to it's maximum, if Felipe has a car he likes, he can be even better, but when he doesn't like the car, he's in trouble.. Fact is that Felipe is actually a very fast driver, looking at his pole positions pre 2009.. He's also a very realistic guy, and a team player, last year, his second half was very very good, but he accepted that, because of his bad first half, he now needed to help Fernando, who did a good job.. Guys like WEB and BUT would never do such a thing, and I think this is very important thing for Ferrari, Ferrari is the team and the dream, if you are a Ferrari driver, you drive FOR Ferrari, you don't drive WITH a Ferrari.. We could use more points from Felipe, but I don't think many would do better.. Look at Fisico in 2009... Felipe is a great driver and a great character, and I think the best way to discribe Felipe is his determination, he is so determinated, not normal...

Ferrari won't rush second driver decision

    Wednesday 10th July 2013, 18:04 by TF1T Staff

    © Ferrari

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has reiterated comments made by team principal Stefano Domenicali, giving his full support to the Brazilian for the remainder of 2013.

However Massa's future after this season remains uncertain after multiple incidents in the last four races which has seen him score just 12 points in the past four races compared to Alonso's 51.

"Felipe is fully aware he can count on our total confidence in him," said Di Montezemolo on Wednesday.

"I hope he will soon secure the results that will show his talent to the full, such as the great starts he pulled off at the last two Grands Prix."

When it comes to next season, the Italian says they won't rush a decision on who will line up alongside Fernando Alonso.

"The future? We will talk about that further down the line as there's no hurry."

Last year, Ferrari extended Massa's contract by a single season and didn't announce the decision until October.

In 2009 he drove 5 fantastic races in a row - from the Spanish until the German GP - after the team faced one of the worst season starts in history, scoring a fair amount of points which put him 5th in the standings as best of the rest.
I love the plucky little soldier.
