On 25th July 1999, Eddie Irvine won the Austrian Grand Prix, held at the A1-Ring, near Zeltweg. It was the Northern Irish driver’s second win, after the ’99 season opener in Melbourne, but there was a greater significance to the win: only two weeks earlier, Michael Schumacher had broken his right leg on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and not many thought a Ferrari could still be in the fight for victory. However, Irvine benefited first from the fratricidal McLaren fight between Coulthard and Hakkinen and then he made the most of the strategy, managing to get past at the Scotsman’s second stop.
In the closing stages, Eddie held off a spirited Coulthard, crossing the line to win with a margin of just 313 thousandths of a second. “I have shown that I can do it!” said Irvine after the race. “The smoke coming from the car in the closing stages of the race probably came from my brain because I had to think of so many things: fuel, brakes, tyres…”
