It happened today – 19 August.

On 19th August 2001, Michael Schumacher won the Hungarian Grand Prix. This victory gave the German his fourth World title, his second with Ferrari and, thanks to a second place for Rubens Barrichello, the Scuderia brought home its third consecutive Constructors’ title. The whole weekend was spent on the attack, with Michael needing just two runs to take pole position, followed by a perfect start that opened the door to the win that ensured he took the crown. Michael produced a faultless race, while behind him, Coulthard had to spend more time fighting off Rubens than on challenging the German. At the second run of pit stops, the Brazilian regained the second place he’d taken at the start and had kept to the first stop, thus ensuring the Ferrari triumph was complete.
The Hungarian victory was the fifty first of Michael’s career and, despite affirmations to the contrary, he was very aware of certain particularly significant statistics. The official press conference transcript testifies to the heightened emotions of the day: “Maybe I’m a good driver, but I am not able to find the right words to describe all this. It’s been a marvelous weekend and we did everything we could. To be honest, I did not have such a good feeling when we got here, but now, after pole and a win that has given me my fourth world title and having equalled Alain Prost’s number of wins (51) I can’t explain how I feel.” No doubt Michael could never have imagined back on that 19th August that there were a further forty wins still to come…
