Ross Brawn to be replaced at Mercedes - reports...

    All content from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/21143847

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Mercedes want to replace team principal Ross Brawn as part of a restructure aimed at improving the team's performance.

The proposal is to replace Brawn, who masterminded Michael Schumacher's seven world titles at Benetton and Ferrari, with two new appointments.

New executive director Toto Wolff is the first of these and he agreed a deal to bring in McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe.

Their intended job titles are not clear but Wolff, 41, will likely be team boss and figurehead with Lowe, 50, running the sporting and technical aspects of the team.

McLaren have refused to comment on the situation, and Mercedes described BBC Sport's information as "highly speculative".

The planned restructure leaves no place for Brawn or chief executive officer Nick Fry, the two men who in the winter of 2008/9 saved what has become Mercedes following the withdrawal from Formula 1 of then-owners Honda.

In their guise as Brawn, the outfit won the 2009 drivers' title with Jenson Button as well as that year's constructors' title before being taken over by Mercedes ahead of the 2010 season.

BBC Sport understands Lowe has agreed to join Mercedes but has not yet signed a contract - so there is a possibility, however small, that he will stay at McLaren.

However, it seems he is keen to move on from his role as technical director as he had previously accepted a position as team principal at Williams, which was offered to him by Wolff, before the Mercedes offer came up.

But although Wolff is now committed to taking Lowe with him to Mercedes, BBC Sport understands the German company's initial contact with Lowe pre-dated Wolff's involvement.

BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan, who has broken two major Mercedes stories in the last three years - with their signings of Schumacher in 2010 and Lewis Hamilton for 2013 - has independently also discovered the team's plans.

"Paddy Lowe is going to Mercedes and it would appear that Brawn and Fry are on their way out, and Lowe will be there in a very senior capacity," Jordan said.

"Lowe won't be technical director; he'll be more senior than that. But he won't be called team principal either," Jordan said, "because that will be Wolff. But Lowe will effectively be running the team on a day-to-day basis."

It remains to be seen how Mercedes will resolve a potentially sticky situation.

The plans of Wolff and Mercedes F1 non-executive director Niki Lauda are to keep Brawn in place until Lowe's 'gardening leave' from McLaren is completed. This period is usually six months off work for senior personnel moving employers.

But if Brawn knows he is to be replaced it seems unlikely he would want to stay on just to keep things going for Lowe.

Mercedes' decision to remodel the top of the team has been based on the perceived need for change at an F1 team who have performed below expectations for the last three years.

Mercedes effectively brought Brawn into existence in early 2009 by agreeing to provide them with engines following Honda's withdrawal.

But staff cuts made because of a lack of budget during 2009 contributed to a dip in form when the team morphed into Mercedes in 2010, when Schumacher joined after coming out of retirement.

Joining the team that had just won the world title and renewing his partnership with Brawn, the German legend expected to be able to challenge for an eighth world championship.

Instead, Mercedes have won just one race in three years, and Schumacher's best result was an inherited third place at Valencia last year. He also set pole position in Monaco in 2012 but was demoted by a grid penalty.

Although 2012 started promisingly, with good qualifying form in several early races and a win by Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg at the third race of the season in China, the team's form dipped alarmingly and by the end of the season they were struggling even to score points.

Brawn has insisted that they had been hit by a technical reshuffle that impacted on their attempts to develop last year's car and has said that he believes the right structure for success is now in place at Mercedes.

Surely this is going to disrupt both McLaren and Mercedes preparations for the new season (again if this story has any truth in it).

Would seem a very odd time to make this change, for all parties concerned.

If true, it's big blow for McLaren, to lose their mastermind just before the new season, i don't see Mercedes getting any weaker.
If Brawn gets sacked or decides he has had enough of Lauda, it will be interesting to see where he goes, retirement or back home to Maranello? (there have been rumors for months about Brawn going back to Ferrari)

This has the signature of Lauda written all over it
Dr Ferdinand Porsche:" Nuvolari is the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future".
Enzo Ferrari once drove with him and recalled even on bends "he never took his foot from the accelerator".

Mercedes. Treating Ferrari legends like this. Michael Schumacher, now Ross. Thank god Rory rejected them, otherwise his legacy would have been tarnished.
If he is in need of a job, I hope he comes back home for dream team mark II.

I think they will do well this coming season, but it has been a disaster so far. But pushing those guys out like that doesn't sit tight with me.

Strange time to be making such changes which will doubtless affect several teams in one way or another. It will certianly cause some disruption to both Merc and Mclaren, but I can't honestly see Ross returning to Ferrari without another sabbatical, especially after all the new guys we've brought on board recently. Interesting, indeed!

I remember rumors about Brawn coming to Ferrari a while back, wonder if that's true. Anyway seems like McLaren is hit by more than others.
Meanwhile, it either says something or just nothing that Alonso, Schumacher and Raikkonen have reputedly spared a F1 podium on five occasions and Fernando has stood on the top step on every occasion. He's F1's first among equals. (PG)

Rory as in Rory Bryne? They tried to get Rory Bryne?

Boy I'm glad it didn't happen then. Would really suck to see Rory Bryne leaving Ferrari to another team.

Something very strange going on within that team, it seems. Obviously Haug departing was just the tip of the iceberg.

I wonder if this is how those Ross back to Ferrari rumors started not long ago.

Looks as if this is all pure speculation and gossip at this point, we need to just concentrate on getting our new appointments working together to deliver the best car on the grid. Let Merc and Mclaren sort this out between them but if any of it happens, I still don't see Ross returning to Ferrari any time soon.

I doubt Ferrari are worried about this. We the fans on the other hand don't run Ferrari, so I guess its harmless for us to pay attention to these rumors.

Norbert Haug leaves Mercedes and probably the world of F1.

Goodbye friend Norbert, thank you for all you gave to our sport, thank you for the fairness, ethics, respect and the sense of fellowship you always offered to your competitors.

We will miss your friendly presence and your easy smile, we will miss you.
    Addio Signor Enzo. Ciao Gilles.

Ross Brawn has categorically stated that he remains in charge of the Mercedes Formula 1 outfit, hitting out replacement rumours which followed Toto Wolff's appointment as the Executive Director of the Mercedes-Benz motorsport division.

Brawn, who addressed the gathered media at the team's factory in Brackley on Thursday, says there is absolutely no substance to the speculation and has reiterated his desire to remain a leading member of the Silver Arrows for 'a very long time'.

"I am the Team Principal," Brawn explained of the situation. "I am in charge of sporting, technical and racing matters. I know all of the plans for the future of the team and I hope that I'm going to be a part of them for a very long time. We are entering a really exciting period, I know the situation completely.

"Mercedes wants a long-term commitment. And obviously, with a lot of additions I want to see how things go before I make a final long-term commitment. I'm planning on being here for a very long time. We have our difficult days but it's a really exciting period. The car is coming together well; we have set some tough tasks over the winter and we are meeting them."

Meanwhile, new Mercedes man Lewis Hamilton says he has ‘been assured’ by Brawn that he will be staying put for many seasons to come and is not currently aware of any plans to bring McLaren Technical Director Paddy Lowe to the squad.

"As far as I'm aware there are no plans to bring Paddy here," Hamilton said. "I've been assured by Ross that his commitment is long-term and that he's here to try and win with me. This reassures me and gives me a positive feeling going forward. There are a lot of great people here.

"It's important in any team to have a head figure who leads the way and can inspire everyone to go that extra distance. If I've got any problems or if I hear any whispers then I can just give him (Brawn) a phone call, which I do and he sets me straight.

"Everything feels really positive to me. It's important that the guys are always analysing and seeing what can be improved. It's important to me that they're prepared to do whatever they need to do to win."

Hamilton will race alongside former karting team-mate Nico Rosberg this season, the man who claimed the sole Mercedes victory of 2012 at the Chinese Grand Prix.

There are some rumors that Paddy Lowe is not going to be present at the MP4-28 launch.

Mercedes were almost 1.5 sec. off pace last year, where is Costa going to find that? I think 2014 is the real challenge.

Paddy Lowe has been hired by Mercedes, but is on "gardening leave" until 2014:

Looks like Brawn might on his way out... Wonder where he will go?

He'd still be working for Ferrari if he were such an excellent engineer. He got fired and since Pat Fry took over things have drastically improved.

Mercedes can have him, no problems.

I'd love to have the great banana eater back to, but just out of curiosity, what place would he take in the organisation? And Domenicali?
