F1 2015 nose rules benefit Mercedes, Ferrari

    ferrari-nose-2014-john-beam-886x424-597x285.jpg

Two teams already have a “big head start” when it comes to the 2015 regulations, according to Force India technical boss Andy Green.

With the shape of this year’s nose designs ranging from the odd to the unseemly, the FIA has moved to end the situation by tweaking the rules for 2015.

It means teams like Lotus, Force India, Toro Rosso, McLaren and Caterham – with the sorts of designs most targeted by the FIA rule change – are having to fundamentally re-design the front of their cars for next season.

With a slightly less radical approach this year was Red Bull, but designer Rob Marshall says the change to meet the 2015 rules will still make a big difference.

In initial wind tunnel testing, he said “We were surprised how much (downforce) we lost”.

His counterpart at Force India, Andy Green, agrees: “The first wind tunnel test showed 20 points of downforce lost”.

Green, however, thinks some teams have been dealt an advantage by the 2015 rule change, as the grid next year is expected to be filled with noses resembling those of this year’s Ferrari and Mercedes cars.

Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said those two teams are very close to already complying with the 2015 rules.

Green said that is a “big head start” for Ferrari, and particularly Mercedes, having already gone through the long and expensive process of crash-testing the impressively short nose on its dominant W05 car.

He explained that the nose is central to the entire “aerodynamic philosophy” of the car, meaning Mercedes and Ferrari’s rivals now have “a lot of lessons” to learn.

Looks like this sentence must have gotten lost when you read the article... clearly Red Bull was mentioned. Seems they will be in the camp that is more affected by the changes.

Would be nice if that suggestion is true. However we still have to fix our PU first before we can take advantage of it.

Its good to hear the other teams will have to play some catch up to Ferrari and Mercedes. Unfortunately I can't help think how Ferrari have made no tweaks to the nose at all this year. Mercedes however have been able to make several pretty significant updates to the nose, which was already an efficient design.

Of the 2. Merc n Ferrari..Mercs def looks better. Funny me thinks also that
Ferrari has made no changes to the nose this year. I find the angle from
the cockpit forward on the Ferrari to be most odd.
My question is what front suspension will Ferrari use next year?

i think James Allison will most deff. change teh front suspension back to PUSH ROD....the pull rod has given us only grief these 3 years we've been running it

and if we go front PUSH ROD, i think the front will be much smoother just liek the Merc's are....and yeah, the Merc is a much better looking car...and FAST too

let's hope that the F15T will not only look better, but also FAST
    Forza Ferrari SEMPRE!!!

The current nose design is definitely the worst I've ever seen on a Ferrari, it just looks horrible IMO and makes the whole car look dumpy from some angles, but as you say, if the 2015 car is a winner and still has a similar nose, I'll forgive it. Wonder why we actually didn't change it at all during the season, did we even try a different one?

They should set the rules so all noses look like this. I think it looks great while being able to satisfy the spirit of the rule

Working and foruming is a bad combination for non multi tasker like me.

I would be even happier, if Merc wouldn't be the other team on the right side during this new reg change.

IIRC, that idea was previously tried by Marussia, where they wrap the exhaust with reflective material to keep the heat in exhaust gas. I guess it works.

Gilles Simon working on F1 engine for Honda
Honda, the Japanese marque that pulled out of F1 at the end of 2008 due to the global financial crisis, could be one such competitor.
Feb.26 (GMM) Honda may already be working on a Formula One project for 2014.
When revealing its all-new turbo V6 'power unit' for next year near Paris on Monday, Renault's Jean-Michel Jalinier said he "definitely" expects more engine makers to enter F1 under the 2014 rules.
"That's why the number of our customers will fall in the future," he is quoted by German website motorsport-total.com, "because there are more competitors."
Honda, the Japanese marque that pulled out of F1 at the end of 2008 due to the global financial crisis, could be one such competitor.
The German-language Speed Week reports that Frenchman Gilles Simon, Ferrari's engine boss during the ultra-successful Jean Todt era, could already be working with Honda.
After leaving Ferrari, Simon worked for the FIA, but most recently he has been designing a turbo V6 for Craig Pollock's intended 2014 F1 supplier Pure.
But with Pollock's plans now collapsed, Speed Week reports that British sources suspect the newly UK-based Simon could be working on a F1 engine for Honda.
For its last F1 foray, Honda was based at Brackley, which is now the headquarters for Mercedes' similarly Ross Brawn-led works team.

Count me in. And I used to dislike that black tale too, after half a season, now it looks properly agressive, I like.

Im all for the noses you guys pictured.
Speaking of that, I watched a program tonight called Acceleration. They show motorsports
from around the world. Pretty good. They show a world series where cars, F1 style are entered by countries, Germany, Italy etc etc..
BUT, they look like F1 cars used to AND here's the good part..they run V8's n they sound incredible!!!! Screaming F1 of yesteryear..well actually, last year and all previous years since the last turbo era ended. Italy has won the last 2 rounds..great sounds, great cars n really good racing.

Actually i was going to post it in rumors section but i wrongly put it here. It is obvious there is no proof in the article itself and it is a guessing game but if it was true, McLaren will have something to cheer about.
