Allison best technical boss since Brawn - Ferrari

James Allison is Ferrari's best technical director since Ross Brawn. That is the view of the Italian team's president Luca di Montezemolo, after a subtle reshuffle of responsibilities took place recently at Maranello.

Until then, Briton Pat Fry was Ferrari's leading technical name, having joined from McLaren in 2010. But Lotus chief James Allison arrived from Lotus late this year, and is now being openly referred to by Ferrari as the technical director.

Fry is still in a prominent technical and engineering role, but Montezemolo is quoted by Finland's Turun Sanomat: "Since Ross Brawn left us, Ferrari did not have a really good technical director. Now we have one," he added. "Allison is very good," said Montezemolo. (GMM)

How can Pat Fry, who was the chief engineer of MP4-22 which was a clone of F2007, not be as good?

i think that was a SARCASM comment.

the MP-22 was only as good as the F2007 because someone from Ferrari (not gonna mention names now) gave Mclaren all teh blueprints of teh F2007
those TWO cars looked almost identical; if one were to paint the MP4-22 in RED, it would look identical to the F2007

im not saying that Pat Fry is not a good engineer, but James Allison is on another planet when you compare the two; but both of them working on the F2014/F146T (whatever teh name of it is gonna be), personally i thing THEY'RE GONNA BE DOING AMAZING THINGS!!!!

all ONE has to look and remember how well LOTUS were doing while JA was technical director there and also on what budget he did that; at Ferrari with teh budget they have i think THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!!!

I think James Allison is even better than Ross Brown, he is probably the second best engineer in F1 behind Adrian Newey.

Coincidentally, when Pat Fry missed the Spanish GP in 2013 after suffering from appendicitis, Fernando and Felipe delivered the best result of the season with a 1st place and 3rd place finish.

Anyhow, now a new position is created for Pat Fry (much like the new positions created for Chris Dyer and Aldo Costa and we all know where they went soon after) except this was the very same person who, as Chief Engineer at Mclaren, incorporated the design of F2007 into MP4-22. Let's hope Fry will not be holding much privileged information in his new position.

I think Pat Fry is very good, but James Allison is exceptionally good and that's the difference. So yea, Luca is right.

Just look at what Allison did at Lotus with very little in the way of resources. And he might even be able to understand Kimi.

Obnoxious. Then fire Fry. Talking about him like this (if Luca D really said it) is terribly low budget.

It's a good thing F1 is just a sport or Luca could start a war. He better forget about replacing Burlusconi! Now that Kimi is back, Luca should ask him for some pointers on making public relations speaches and doing interviews in general. The less said the better in his case. Silenziosamente , un cambiamento in meglio.

He is. But why dis a current employee? What point does it serve? It makes Luca D sound like an idiot at best and an asshat at worst.

Luca has always been like that. But, he is a product of the Italian aristocracy, so he gets away with it.

Pat Fry had enough influence in terms of structural updating and as himself said before he and Ferrari didn't leave any stone unturned and Alison hailed huge amount of works that were done before his arrival. So every part is completing the other parts.

Yep, Kimis advice might be "sometimes silence is gold"

It's called "negative reinforcement", and it's a perfectly common and legitimate management technique in all workplaces... "Negative reinforcement has its place in good management as well. Cutting hours of a part-time employee, reprimanding an employee verbally or through formal documentation, demotion and termination are all example of negative consequences used to promote good performance. The point is to discourage employees from undesirable outcomes and toward positive rewards. Negative reinforcement coupled with rewards for positive behaviors creates a good balance."

By saying that James Allison is "better", it in turn makes Pat try even harder and push himself to be better than Allison, or at least that's how I see it.

Enzo Ferrari called himself "An agitator of men" and I guess that's exactly what Luca is trying to do as well, after all Enzo was his mentor.

Possibly. One might argue that anointing Allison as head honcho before he actually does anything major is an odd way of managing him, though. Sort of like LDM's yearly "Ferrari will win it all" speech.

Well, James Allison was with us already during 2000-2004 seasons and was one of the main key figures in the great success of that era, so I think he has already proved himself enough, but Pat Fry hasn't...yet.
