Double points for Formula 1 season finales

Formula 1 will award double points for its final round from 2014 in an effort to keep championship battles open longer!

Interesting idea, not sure it's very fair though.

Also see the budget cap is coming in 2015.....

Interesting idea, about time F1 introduced something like this. Thought be better somewhere mid season, Spa, Monaco few others come to mind. But the final race? title maybe gone before then.

Another artificial "excitement". For me it's in the same category as DRS, artificial rain, medals, grooved tyres,... just another clown to the circus.

They could decide that Interlagos, Spa, Monza weren't worth ANY points and I'd still find them more exciting.

Maybe they should allow all teams two joker cards per season, you can play joker card to the race of your choice, this then gives you the opportunity to double the points for the race chosen by any team which has used a joker card, so if you finish first 25 points becomes 50. For example we might choose Spa and Monza.

How about if you drive over a certain spot you get a turbo boost? Maybe you also pick up a blue turtle shell that will knock out the lead car?

I hope every season from now on will be so boring that this double points nonsense won't make a difference. When Schumi won everything they made race wins less important, when because of that the wrong driver wins the championship they revert it again, but this is truly absurd.

Indeed it's interesting but is it 100 % sure already that this will be the case next year or is it still an idea only?

A tad unfair I would think.
Was there not a period in the 80s when teams could choose their top 11 races to count towards their championship points?
They only had about 14 races back then I think or am I dreaming
Maybe bring that idea back but use the top 15 races.

Anyone gone back through past seasons and seen if it would actually change anything yet?

Let's review recent proposals by the FIA for 2014: two mandatory pits stops, fuel limit of 100 liters, now, double points for the last race? Is this for real? Next, we'll see the safety car employed for the last ten laps to spice up the race!!
what a joke F1 has become, Most of the tracks are boring as hell, If a driver puts his wheels one foot over a painted line, they get a drive thru penalty. The current leadership in F1 is overreaching their authority and as a result the sport is fast becoming a shell of this former self!

This is just ridiculous. Why even race anymore? F1 is so much of a joke now, first it was funny, now it's just sad... How much more can we take before we stop watching?

vettle has won 3 of the 5 Abu Dhabi gps held. In the other 2 he was on pole but got a puncture (2011) and started in the pit lane finishing 3rd (2012). I find it no coincedence that the season finale was changed to this track and double points applied. I just hope it was intended to off-set a weakness (known by insiders at the meeting, but not in the public domain) of the renault power train. I think this is just wishful thinking and most likely someone is getting there pockets lined with oil money.

Well if they're really serious about this then that's gotta be one of the most ridiculous and dumbest rules ever invented! Why not just give the winner of the last race 1000 points, so that all the other races during the season become totally irrelevant...pfff. Yet another stupid artificial gimmick to "help F1 become more interesting" when actually these kind of ridiculous artificial rules are doing the exact opposite of that. What will they think of next...??? *sigh*

IMO, it's not fair to do this because we suddenly have a race that carries more weight for no good reason (in terms of competition), and it changes the result as Kyss4k pointed out. Every race is roughly equal when all things considered, and therefore rightfully they carry the same amount of weight for the points.

In the cases Kyss4k pointed out, there is nothing the actual winner can do to prevent this alternate result (had this alternate point system been around) because the extra points are awarded just because we want to, and not because that particular race is more difficult. Their approach to the final race is the same as any other races, that was the max result they could achieve that day, and yet they did not win simply because the final race suddenly have more points. I don't think that's fair

If it want the final race to carry more points, then it has to be done differently, and make those points worth as much as the other races.

It's to prevent anyone from wrapping up the title too early. Usually interest falls away once the championship is decided, and this is not good for the remaining races.

Abu Dhabi guys would be ticked off if they paid Bernie tons of cash to get the finale and nobody watched because the championship was already over

I think they should find better ways to overcome this problem, such as tackling it from the technical side. Try to avoid another situation where one car is 2 sec faster than everyone else.
