    Lotus delays E22 reveal

6 January 2014 – Lotus F1 team technical director, Nick Chester has confirmed the Enstone-based outfit is to delay the introduction of its new 2014 F1 car and that it will not run with the E22 until the Bahrain tests in March.

“We’re going to keep our car under wraps a little longer than some other teams,” he stated. “We’ve decided that attending the Jerez test isn’t ideal for our build and development programme.

“We are likely to unveil the car before attending the Bahrain tests, and in Bahrain we should really be able to put the car through its paces in representative conditions.”

It remains to be seen if the squad will bother running at Jerez from January 28-31 with the E21, although it seems unlikely given the major regulation changes for the coming season.

Meanwhile, despite the fact the outfit will not be ready for the first pre-season test, Chester insisted that work on the E22 is progressing well.

“We’ve made very good progress with the various homologation tests which took place before Christmas including chassis squeeze and side impact loading tests as well as the rear crash structure, meaning we just have the nose test to complete the car’s homologation,” he explained.

“We’ve undertaken chassis fits for Romain [Grosjean] and Pastor [Maldonado]. Certainly, our partners who have seen the car have reported themselves to be very impressed with the layout and various solutions to the new technical challenges.”

“From our perspective the figures look promising and development has been positive,” he continued. “That said, however, we are very much working with very little idea of what the other teams are doing. This is the first year of radically different regulations which means that all teams are developing their cars along potentially quite different avenues. It’s fascinating for us engineers and I hope it is fascinating for the fans too.

"We think we have a very good solution to the challenge and hopefully this will be seen when the E22 turns its wheels in anger.”

Thanks. Looking forward to see all the new cars

I wonder if Lotus is skipping Jerez test due to lack of money. I can't think of any reason why testing would not be ideal for any development program

There are 2 tests in Bahrain: 19-22 February and 27 February - 02 March and I dont think they will show up with a car on last test just 2 weeks before season begins??? I think Lotus guy meant 1. Bahrain test cos he said "before attending the Bahrain tests"

Somewhat, got a feeling that we won't even be seeing Lotus before the first race. It's going on a downhill spiral...

Don't think they have a car that is ready to test. It is difficult to have a testing program and structure for a car that might not even have mad it of the design table yet.

So yes i do think it is money. But the lack of money last year to develop and design a car for this year.

Renault having problems ?! When was the last time i heard that ??
Anything that helps make this season NOT like last year and very competitive (with an end in our favor ofcourse ) is almost the need of the hour.
Also what are they chances that we will have an online launch as well ? Any clue anyone ?

Lotus has nothing to do with Renault. Because Renault is supplying in 2014 RBR, STR; and Caterham

It could very well be that Kimi is making it difficult for Lotus to move forward with investors and development of the new car. If he is going to enforce his contract, he would be the first to be paid before investor money could go to the new car.

I know that there is big anxiety about new cars, but it is much easier to wait two more weeks than to speculate!

Nothing wrong with a bit of foreplay.

As I recall Kimi already agreed to get just 5 millions instead of 20 millions (contract) and even that sum is not easy to get from Lotus...so in a way Kimi is their greatest sponsor and if he invest some more we could get Kimi GP soon :)

    IMHO,
    - Renault if Lotus gets funding sorted
    - RBR will continue to be Renault's #1 team.

With Lotus missing the first test that should eliminate at least one of our competitors. It's going to be almost impossible for them to catch up with the teams that will participate in the first test. Every second of on-track testing is going to be double in value this season, that's a fact.

Are there limitations to the amount of tyres available per team during testing?

Looks like there will be no live coverage from Sky for Jerez test week. Only roundup and Ted's notebook after each day's session.

I wonder if any other tv channel have live coverage.

I dont remember having live test coverages, ever.
Meanwhile, it either says something or just nothing that Alonso, Schumacher and Raikkonen have reputedly spared a F1 podium on five occasions and Fernando has stood on the top step on every occasion. He's F1's first among equals. (PG)
