Thumbs up It happened today – 24 January

On 24th January 2006, the 246 F1, the car built to compete in that year’s Formula 1 World Championship, was launched at the Mugello circuit.

On a very cold day, when the temperature never rose above freezing, Michael Schmacher debuted the last Ferrari with which the seven times world champion would race in Formula 1. The German completed 44 laps of the Tuscan track, the quickest in a time of 1.21.904.

The 246 F1 took nine wins that year, seven thanks to Michael (San Marino, Europe, United States, France, Germany, Italy and China) and another two in Turkey and Brazil courtesy of Felipe Massa, in his first year racing for the Scuderia. However, the 19 podium finishes, 29 points finishes, 7 pole positions and 9 fastest race laps were not enough to win either of the Championships: Michael was second in the Drivers’, behind Fernando Alonso and ahead of Felipe, while the team was runner-up in the Constructors.’

Seems strange to think that even with all those wins and podiums, we didn't take any titles. But happier times than of late, I think.
