About the mclaren wing-suspension, don't you guys think that if it really brings a significant advantage they wouldn't have showed it so early to the others?
Pat Symonds said it's copyable so why would they show it to their competitors so early?

This is the time of one of the GP2 Test in Jerez last year.

Right now, in test, most of the F1 cars are slower than the GP2. I hope that tomorrow the times will come down to 1.20.00, or we well face that on GP2 can do Q3 in australia
Would be embarrassing if F1 is as fast as GP2 only, let alone slower. But I think the teams still have a few seconds in reserve as I doubt they would show their hands and push to the limit.

I can reassure you that the F1 cars will be faster than GP2. You have to remember that the 2014 change in regulations are quite big for the teams and the new power units are very complex. I don't think any teams have experimented with different setups yet, I think they are running a base setup and trying to put down as much milage on the cars and power units to assess any wear and reliability issues.

Yes I'm thinking in those lines too but on the other hand it looks really extreme and maybe it takes a lot of time to fine tune. At the moment I can't see why one should copy it, first: we don't know if it's actually brings any reasonable performance, second: to my eyes this can only create some downforce in low to mid speed corners and on the straights it has to create drag an you lose top speed unless they have a way to stall it at high speed and third: I'm not an expert just using my common sense, all we can do is to wait and see how this develops during pre-season.

If the gain from McLaren Butterfly solution is massive, the teams will have a shot at that one. I think the teams still don't know how much McLaren will gain.
It is copyable but It is hard to copy and takes time and it needs to redesign rear end of the car.

It is exactly this suspension geometry that would make it extremely hard for other teams to simply copy the design, as it would require redesigning the gearbox, the rear suspension mountings and the suspension wishbones, creating a combined impact on aerodynamics and mechanical behaviour that will take time to verify and optimise.
take a look at full article: http://www.f1technical.net/development/435

So much headache ahead of the teams designers

Just saw on tv button stating how he's happy cause mclaren is super good. Domenicali said there is few grip on the rear and car is way slower gran last year.

We invented the sequential paddle operated gearbox back in the late 70's with Gilles; who actually didn't think it was useful and it wasn't until Il Leone arrived that we implemented it.

I can't recall any other really innovative silver bullet that Ferrari brought to F1 after that, it was more a series of well developed and honed packages that brought us success.

As for RB, I don't care. I just enjoy the irony. Red Bull decided to use the Renault Engines instead of the Ferrari engines because of the cooling requirements of the later.

Now, it's obvious that the Mercedes Engines are good. How good? I don't know.

As for McLaren, I hope that it's illegal. Because otherwise, and if McCheaters are not running glory runs for the eyes of Sony, we are in trouble...
These great looking ideas go 2 way. Double diffuser, blown diffuser or forward facing exhausts, octopus exhausts, acer ducts, sauber sidepods, extra wing (95 mclaren) etc. This will not bring double diffuser benefits or would have been used last year, it is to make up SOME of the loss from know beam wing. If it was as good as a beam wing or better a team would have used it in place of a beam wing, at least in testing to at least check it. That they have not means it cannot be close to a beam wing. Any ideas the loss in laptime from beam wing alone. The McLaren suspension will bring less than this excluding any downsides on drag, airflow from a different profile of gearbox.

Mclaren isn't running for sponsors, why? because if mclaren is in such economic problems, why they say godbye to Perez and Slim's money? Mclaren could be running with telmex stickers.

And no one has worst opinion from Mclaren (or Mccheaters as tpe says), but come on guys, they are Mclaren, if sauber or force indian can get sponsors, do you really think that Mclaren needs to do fast laps like Brawn in 2009?

Otherwise, Mark p is right about that mclaren innovations, use to be very shinny, but not always are something really important. The best example is RB, today, no one knows for sure why they hit everybody with +2 seconds per lap. The blown diffuser was something apart (and let me remember us that Ferrari and Renault presented to the FIA a double diffuser to homologation before 2009 championship, and the FIA told us that it was ilegal and agains the spirit of the rules).

There is not magic tricks every season. The mistake was think that RB has something especial. Its easier that RB had 100 things of 0.010 in every race, than something that gave him 2 seconds in singapore.

Ferrari invented the "Tyre warming box" in 2005...

And Ferrari was also the first team ever to use the "traffic light system" during pit stops in 2008...

We were also the first team back in 1998 to exit the exhaust through the top of the bodywork. Think it was at the Spainish grand prix when we brought the update.....

Laughing at RBR is precisely the kind of thing that can come and bite you on the backside so I'm not going to.
I would love it if the order was shaken up this season though...

just watched teds notebook....consider this...so far it is taking three hours to change a gear box and 6 hours for an engine....this means if you have a failure in P3 your missing Quali!!!!

This is the worst news about Renault today,

''French engine manufacturer had informed their customer teams that the maximum running their current power train could offer was 250km''.
    AND
''Simply put, there are components in the Renault engine which will fail should it be pushed beyond around 75%. On top of this, the RB10 has cooling issues for the energy recovery systems, the engine and various other associated components''

    and more here http://thejudge13.com/

True but they are not exactly car innovations that bring speed.
I think people are talking about innovative on chassis solutions. Exhaust exits at the top of the body work was innovative but not a game changer.

The Mclaren braking system of 1998 was an innovative silver bullet, as was the Brawn double diffuser.
Can't remember our last silver bullet (not including Schumacher, Todt, Brawn, Byrne and Martinelli.

The Ferrari looks like it is missing a bit of downforce. In the medium-to-high-speed corners, especially the one onto the back straight, you can hear a bit of tyre squeal and in the lower speed corners the rear is giving up on corner exit.

With these turbo engines being quieter, you can now hear the tyres crying enough.

The difference between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso is that Fernando loves to leave big black lines on the track, primarily to make a point to the team about where the car needs improving. By Gary Anderson

Good to see the team already testing different diffusers. Definitely bodes well for the teams confidence in the baseline package.

Let's just hope we haven't missed a big trick with the butterfly suspension.

Regarding to copying of Mclaren wishbone design, The concern Red Bull or other teams have is valid. It's not that it can be copied easily, it's the way entire car is designed around these innovations. So many teams copied Red Bull style blown diffusers, exhaust ramp, but none performed close to Red Bull level since their entire car was designed around it. Will be interesting to see how much gain this type of wishbone can give if deemed legal.

It is the Year of the Horse again!!!!
Remember how we dominated in 2002 with the F2002?

We will do it again this year. Have faith and let our team do what they do best. There is no need in panicking because we are not lighting up the time screens. Ferrari knows what they are doing and are putting everything in place to go out guns blazing in Australia.

    Have Faith.

I didn't bothered to read it all but I call nonsense upon this article unless it is special testing recommendations from Renault. This implies that all 4 Renault customers may not finish a race since a race is around 300km. I can't see how this is true, I don't think Renault spend tonnes of money and resources to develop a power unit that can't run the full race distance. Ofcourse it is hard to see any Renault powered car finsish a race at the moment but I think they will solve their issues soon. From my Ferrari eyes I wouln't mind having all 4 Renault powered cars retire but I can't see that happen.

Isn't it strange that right now Mclaren suddenly have the best rear-end downforce after hired Red Bull's head of aerodynamics Peter Prodromou.
Maybe he had the largest role in all these RB's crowns, not Andrian Newey.

Well, Prodromou is still a RBR employee. I doubt he has emailed the RB secrets to McLaren already.

i think prodromou arrived too late to have a big impact on the car immediately.
