Thumbs up It happened today – 27 January

On 27th January 1974, the Brazilian Grand Prix, the second round of that year’s Formula 1 World Championship took place in Sao Paulo. At Interlagos, the Scuderia fielded Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni, both at the wheel of the 312 B3-1974. In qualifying, the Austrian was third fastest, while the Swiss was eighth. It was a very short race for Niki, who had to retire after a handful of laps because of an engine problem. As for Clay, he did a good job of flying the Prancing Horse colours, putting on a great climb up the order which eventually took him to second place, 13 seconds down on the winner, Emerson Fittipaldi. These two were the only ones credited with going the distance: the race was interrupted with eight laps to go because of torrential rain.

The result took Regazzoni into the lead of the championship classification with 10 points, one more than the McLaren duo of Fittipaldi and Hulme, while Lauda was fourth with 6 points. Regazzoni also had the satisfaction of setting the race fastest lap.

Regazzoni sadly seemed destined to suffer the same fate as Felipe in the pecking order, always the bridesmaid and never the bride! Shame, but they certainly gave us something to savour.
