Malaysian GP 2014 Friday and Saturday practice thread

After all the various rumours since Melbourne, let's see what we can do!

Wasn't so long ago people were suggesting (or praying) we were using different timing points in Bahrain testing to disguise our incredible pace.

Malaysia should be more revealing. Too many rumors and reports flying around with conflicting views.

I believe we are in better shape than we look. Hopefully, we'll be bringing in some updates. Now's the time to do that with these two upcoming back to back races.

I agree, from the team it sounds as though they can get the car working better and are optimistic of having better performance this weekend. I don't really believe the rumours about still having 18kg of fuel at the end or whatever it was, or our ERS not working for some laps. However I'm pretty sure there are some areas like braking and ERS the team can improve. Pretty much for the same reason McLaren are hoping for this half-second improvement, just because a lot of the car systems aren't optimised that well.

I also don't buy into the whole "Melbourne isn't a good gauge of performance", yes the track is a street track and a bit unique, but the order will likely be the same this weekend.

It sounds negative, but I'm hoping we can just keep scoring decent points up until Barcelona through reliability and decent pace, and hoping one team/driver doesn't dominate. Then if by that point we're not up there with the leaders (likely Mercedes) in terms of pace, it's hard to see we can win either title without consistent mechanical DNF's from them.

Good aim for this weekend would be being the 2nd fastest team behind Mercedes, I'm a bit concerned as at the first race Kimi was being legitimately attacked by Toro Rosso's during the race.

    1 Button, 315km/h
    2 Massa, 314km/h
    3 Bottas, 313km/h
    4 Magnussen, 311km/h
    5 Hulkenberg, 310km/h

EDD STRAW: "Interesting to note that Alonso has set the fastest time in sector two - 34.291s. No long straights in that part of the lap, which is mostly corners including the spectacular Turn 5/6 left/right sweep. Rosberg is fastest in the first and last sector."

We are still lacking to speed??

    Prac One: Hamilton edges Raikkonen

Hamilton retired from the season-opening Australian GP with an engine issue but it proved to be a quick fix for Mercedes and the Brit was back in his W05 with the exact same engine at Sepang.

Putting in the laps, 19 in total, the Mercedes driver clocked a 1:40.691 to beat Raikkonen by 0.152.

It was a much improved session for the Ferrari driver, who revealed he was happier with his F14T's balance on Friday morning.

Nico Rosberg was third for Mercedes, finishing ahead of the McLarens of Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen.

The latter had a minor issue that led to him switching off his engine, however, with the marshals help he was pushed back into the pits and was soon back in the action.

Jean-Eric Vergne continued Toro Rosso's early season form, finishing sixth quickest, 0.711s down, while Sebastian Vettel was a further 0.121s down.

Nico Hulkenberg and Felipe Massa were the final two drivers to get within a second of Hamilton's P1 time while Valtteri Bottas completed the top ten.

There were more issues at Lotus, who covered just six laps between both drivers.

Romain Grosjean stopped out on track with a battery issue but did make it back out in the final five minutes while Pastor Maldonado, after a lengthy period in the pits following his installation lap, pulled his E22 into the pits with smoke coming out the back of the car.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez also managed just two laps in his Force India while Kamui Kobayashi covered five before Caterham "found a problem with his energy store so it's floor off to change it so he can run again in FP2."
