On 29 March 1974, a Ferrari took pole for the first time in almost two years, or 1 year and 203 days to be precise. Setting the Prancing Horse’s 61st fastest qualifying lap was Niki Lauda, in South Africa. The previous pole dated back to the 1972 Italian Grand Prix, when Jacky Ickx started from the number one slot.
At the Kyalami track, the Austrian took the first of his 23 Ferrari poles, to start ahead of the Brazilian Carlos Pace, who was just 5 hundredths slower in the Surtees. Third was the Italian Arturo Merzario with the Iso Marlboro, while in the other 312 B3, Clay Regazzoni was sixth on a very tight grid that featured 13 drivers all within 83 hundredths.
Things went less well in the race, as Lauda was passed by Carlos Reutemann in the Brabham on lap 9 and had to retire, just as Regazzoni did, with an engine problem when there were just four laps to go to what looked like a podium finish.
