Arrivabene: I do not want to hear about team orders

Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has ruled out boosting Ferrari’s title hopes with the help of team orders, a tactic often employed by the Reds during past management regimes.

After just three races, Sebastian Vettel is not only splitting the two Mercedes drivers in the championship, but he has scored more than double the points of his teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

It has raised suggestions that, if German Vettel is going to have any chance of taking on Mercedes with an inferior car, Ferrari will have to adopt its former approach of designating clear ‘number one’ and ‘number two’ driver roles.

But team boss Arrivabene said there is no doubt that Finn Raikkonen will continue to enjoy full equality.

“We will give him all of the necessary support,” he is quoted by Autosprint, “and I do not want to hear about team orders.”

“When I arrived at Maranello I saw the old rules of engagement, and I made some changes in the presence of both drivers and their race engineers – so that everybody is informed.”

“The only rule in force is that of mathematics,” Arrivabene insisted.

La Gazzetta dello Sport also quotes the Italian as explaining: “As long as both of them are in the [title] battle, Seb and Kimi are free to fight each other, but not cause problems.”

IMO, Team orders are unavoidable, especially When a team is in the middle of intense championship battle with other rivals, team order is the only way to go.
There is only one possible scenario to not use team orders and it is when a team has a huge point advantage like Mercedes in 2014 season.

“The only rule in force is that of mathematics” by Maurizio Arrivabene, is reminder of probable scenario of team orders in specific situation.

It's more complicated than that of course. The team makes the strategy calls and the pit stop decisions, and those are 'team orders' which at least have the potential to tip the battle between teammates.

In China the team pitted Vettel early to try to undercut Rosberg. Which was a perfectly reasonable thing for the team to try, but it could have ended up handing Kimi the third podium spot at Seb's expense. Unless a team is going to allow its driver to stop whenever they like and pick which tyre they want, the team is always involved in the contest between teammates and its decisions can affect which driver finishes ahead of the other.

Would not call that a team order really.

Anyway if Seb keeps beating Kimi then it's not going to be an issue.

The team with the drivers make a general plan of the strategy when they gonna pit and witch tires!!!Inthe race the team have a better view of the whole field and take a decision according to the pace of the other cars, traffic etc,and for the tires the first word is the drivers!!!So yes the team can change the outcame of the race ig they chanfe the strategy but the driver himshelf haw alot to say on the strategy and the tires before and through the race!!!

How do you figure? Seb's only trailing Hamilton by 15 points.

Seems to me that Vettel is picking up where Alonso left off. That's not to say Kimi can't take the fight to him like Massa has to Bottas, but saying "if" is a big word is a big stretch.

Based on these 3 races Hamilton/Mercedes will take the titles with ease.

I am just one man but for me it is very certain that Kimi and Seb are very matched with speed in the race. Maybe in this or that one has the advantage, but this is true for both. So it is going to be very possible if Ferrari does not mess up Kimi's qualifying to put him out so late in the rain, or mess up his race by putting the tire on poorly, that he is going to finish very well in the races. We will see sometimes Seb, sometimes Kimi in the front. No stupid team orders unless only 1 is really fighting in the championship.

I agree, kimi always finds a way to get into trouble in quali and races, even q3 last weekend first sector was a mess.

Based on 3 races it's way too early to make any kind of conclusions about the entire season, don't you think?

I dont think that in this year will be team orders or something like that, when some of ferrari drivers go to position to fight for championship then they will make strategy for that situation. For now I think will be bring cars home and free will to race

No matter when or where, during any race Kimi should and must "Let Seb Pass!" What " if "Seb needs that point or two at the end of a season? The words and mentality of the great legend, Jean Todt. For Seb to truly follow in his mentor's fashion @Ferrari, team orders in his favor every race are a must . Austria 2002, the shinning light !

maybe he is just playing mind games with Merc.. on that side they are trying to keep the drivers from getting into a scraping match talking about team orders.. On this side we are putting a ALL CLEAR sign up.

It all started with Vettel in the AUS conf getting under Nico's skin. now if we can get ahead of him and get Ham rattled we might have the chance to pull off the greatest highway robbery of all time.

Team orders are crucial when two team mates are competitive.
For example, if 2007 Mclaren used team orders now Kimi would not be a champion.
But i'm definitely against team orders if they start at the very beginning of the season. They should be implied to the driver with the most points at the second half of the season and only if he is in range of wining the WDC.

Probably more a measure of how confident Arrivabene is that Seb will continue to beat Kimi.
