2015 Bahrain GP: Post-race articles and news

Raikkonen: You’re never happy when you finish second

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen has not been on a podium since Singapore 2013, but that all changed when he was the star of the Bahrain Grand Prix where he powered to second place in the race. He spoke after his evening at Sakhir.

    Kimi – terrific. Happy?
Kimi Raikkonen: Obviously you’re never happy when you finish second but I think after a difficult start to the year I’m a bit pleased to get some result – a bit better result. Obviously we came through in the end very quickly but we run out of the laps but I think we have to be happy after where we qualified, after we finished, but obviously we’re looking for a bit better results still.

Well, it’s a terrific success for Ferrari to come back as strongly as this. You must be pleased about that?
KR: Yeah, I’m very happy how the team is working and obviously after last year where we are now is a big step and everyone is working very well together. The atmosphere is good now and we have a good direction to keep pushing. It seems to be working well and things are improving, so I’m sure as a team we’ll get there and to be able to be all the time fighting for wins, but it will take a little more time.

After being fourth in Malaysia and China and being out of top three for 18 months, how much do you appreciate this comeback to the podium?
KR: Obviously it’s much nicer than being out of it but, you know, you come second and obviously we got quite close to the Mercedes today but it’s a bit disappointing after that always – but I’d rather take this one than something else. You cannot feel happy. We are happy to be second but it’s still disappointing. It’s not what we want to do. Big thanks to the team. I had a pretty hard time last year. This year in the beginning, just some bad luck in the races but, you know, the team has done a great job over the winter and everybody is pushing together, in the same direction and I’m sure we are only going to get stronger and better as a team and improve the car. So, it’s a great place to be.

Do you think the only possibility to beat Mercedes is by trying a different strategy, trying to undercut them because beating them on track seems a bit difficult now?
KR: Well, I don’t think it’s the only way. Obviously on some circuits we can get closer, some not, but I think obviously the first step is to improve our package, that will happen in the future and hopefully get closer. One step is to qualify more higher up, make better starts and go from there. I think we had a pretty decent speed today but obviously if you’re behind any cars and you lose any seconds, you will pay a price for it in the end. I think we just have to keep working and improving the whole package and how we do things. I’m sure we will get there and we can fight for wins every weekend after that.

You were flying in the second and third stints on both type of tyre but you struggled in the first stint. Have you any idea why?
KR: I wasn’t struggling really. I didn’t feel that it was much problem. I got passed by Nico, I passed him at the start and I got passed by him and obviously you lose quite a bit of time and then he passed Seb and we were pretty close to each other. I felt I was faster but obviously it’s pretty hard to pass. I think that we did the maximum, more or less. Yesterday we lost a place to Nico, but after that, once we got the mediums and the new set of softs at the end, the car was very good, so I could keep up good speed and everything was running smoothly, but already at that point we were a bit too far off first place.

Can you tell us how this year’s car is an improvement on last season’s. Everybody talks about the power unit but is it just that or is there a lot more?
KR: Obviously a big chunk of it is the engine itself. It’s a big improvement on horsepower plus reliability but you cannot just give all the credit to them. The car has improved a lot: much more downforce, the car is handling much better because of that, and obviously how the whole package has been done and put together. I think the big key is that all areas have improved quite a bit plus the people have been working more closely, as one team putting it together more nicely, so obviously the end result is what we have now and then as I said earlier, I’m very happy how things are going, very happy with the team and I think not many people expected after last year that we can be in this kind of position this early and now we are going in the right direction, so I’m sure we will get there but we want to start winning races more often and we just have to have some patience and do the work that we’ve done so far and we will get there.

Is the challenge of the championship against the rival teams more difficult than against your teammate, because you don’t know what others have or what others are planning in terms of strategy and that sort of thing?
KR: I think it doesn’t make a lot of difference. Obviously with your teammate you more or less know what he’s doing and in the race when he’s going to stop but you have to beat all of them so it’s really the same end result.

    Arrivabene: Kimi is back

Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene welcomed back the Kimi Raikkonen of old on Sunday after the 2007 world champion stepped back on the Formula One podium in Bahrain after a long absence.

The Finnish ‘Iceman’ took a strong second place in the floodlit race at the desert Sakhir circuit for his first top three finish since he was second for Lotus in South Korea in October 2013.

It was also his first podium finish for Ferrari since 2009, the final year of his first stint at Maranello. The Finn returned in 2014.

“I’m happy for Kimi because now I can say officially that… Kimi is back and we have two strong drivers,” said Arrivabene.

Raikkonen is out of contract at the end of the season, although Ferrari have an option for 2016, and the 35-year-old has indicated he wants to stay on at the sport’s most successful team.

His form has certainly picked up, after a disappointing 2014 alongside Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso when he scored only 55 points to the Spaniard’s 161, but so too has the team’s performance.

The arrival of four-times champion Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull has already brought Ferrari their first win since 2013 and Raikkonen said on Sunday he wanted a piece of the action.

His strategy on Sunday, leaving a set of soft tyres to last when others were running on slower mediums, could certainly have brought more.

As it was, he still set the fastest lap of the race — the 41st of his career and lifting him level with four-times champion Alain Prost in joint second place in the all-time lists.

“You cannot feel happy. We are happy to be second but it’s still disappointing. It’s not what we want to do,” Raikkonen told reporters.

“I had a pretty hard time last year. This year in the beginning, just some bad luck in the races but the team has done a great job over the winter and everybody is pushing together in the same direction.

“I’m sure we are only going to get stronger and better as a team and improve the car. So, it’s a great place to be,” he added.

    Wolff: Ferrari are catching up

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff sighed with relief on Sunday night after seeing both of his team’s cars complete the Bahrain Grand Prix, world champion Lewis Hamilton claiming his third victory in four races this year.

Hamilton’s teammate Nico Rosberg finished third, after losing his brakes on the penultimate lap, while Hamilton had to hang on as he completed the contest after his brakes failed due to overheating as he headed towards the chequered flag.

First Wolff hailed Ferrari’s effort in qualifying, “Ferrari has done a great job and they are snapping at our heels.”

“It was a huge relief as both cars lost brake power,” said Wolff after the race in Bahrain, hiding his disappointment at losing a one-two finish with Finn Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari finishing second.

“It was a shame for Nico because he was having a great race and did some great overtaking,” added Wolff. “We need to analyse the overheating problem.

“And looking at the result, we were not dominant and Ferrari are catching up. We need to do everything we can to continue to beat them.”

As Wolff lamented Mercedes’ relative loss of superior performance against Ferrari, the Italian team were uncertain if they should laugh or cry – Raikkonen saying he was disappointed not to win the race and four-time champion German Sebastain Vettel lamenting his own performance after finishing fourth.

“I went wide on the last corner and damaged my front wing,” said Vettel of an incident that cost him substantial time. “I felt like I had less front grip and decided to pit, which was the right call. It was a shame as I got stuck and could not get in front.

“I feel like I let the team down a little when it was in reach. Kimi proved with second that it is possible and he drove a good race,” added the four times world champion.

At the engineer meetings after the Bahrain GP, Sebastian Vettel studied all the data to the smallest detail, for about an hour!!His therapist Antti Kontsas waited an hour on a chair in front of the motorhome and had to twiddle their thumbs. Only then was he satisfied with the race analysis. It was shortly before midnight when Vettel finally left for the airport!!

Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene says both his drivers would have finished on the podium in Bahrain had Sebastian Vettel's race not been compromised by mistakes.

He also confirmed that Kimi Raikkonen's strategy of using medium tyres in the middle stint was decided before the race.

"We had a clear strategy for the two drivers," said Arrivabene.

"Seb made two little mistakes, the big one was at the beginning so we were obliged to change the strategy for Seb. We told Kimi to follow our strategy, at a certain point he was not really convinced, and we said no, we stay as we are. He was brave enough and disciplined enough to follow, and it was a good result.

"With Seb we changed the strategy and we went to Plan B, but with Kimi we were following exactly what we preferred."

    Cool conditions key

Arrivabene said the team choose Kimi's strategy after conditions turned out to be cooler for the race than in Friday practice, which led to the decision to use mediums in the middle of the race.

"Today we put together an aggressive strategy, and this is exactly what we discussed. Today we recognised the gap that we have with Mercedes, so the only way is to be aggressive, because at this stage you can make a mistake if you are aggressive. If you are not it's not the right time.

"If one day, I don't know when, we are able to catch them, of course the strategy must be put together in a way that is a bit different.

"You saw on Friday that our pace was quite good, but the temperature was different versus today. This is the reason why were changing the strategy that we had in mind before to the new one, due to the conditions of the track, which were changing.

"If everything was going well I'm sure we were going to have two drivers up to the podium. I don't tell you which positions, but two drivers for sure. I don't tell you the position because I don't know! But one was very, very interesting.

"Regarding Seb I have to say he two little mistakes, but we don't have to forget what he has done until now, he won one race, two podiums. Sometimes it happens, we are human beings, thank God, and this is the beauty of the sport.

"I'm happy for Kimi because now I can officially say, not that I signed a contract, that Kimi's back. We have two strong drivers."

That's impressive. Great to hear that he is so dedicated. Hopefully he'll be back to his very best in the next race.

Arrivabene is absolutely amazing. Damn what a boss! As for Seb, Im sure he will be back. Until race he had great weekend. 0.060 off in FP3, 2nd in qualis and amazing race sim on friday better then anyone else. He had like 8 laps in exact same thousand of a second so Im not sure what happend. Maybe mistake from to much pushing just made him crack and he wanted to win so no problem, both of our guys were amazing in first 4 races.
