Singapore Grand Prix 2015 - News

Air quality threat to Singapore GP weekend

Singapore Grand Prix organisers are concerned about air quality in the region which might affect the drivers' visibility under the floodlights.

A dense smog cloud has been hanging over Singapore for the past week as a result of farmers in neighbouring Sumatra clearing their land for farming by using controlled fires to raze forests, an annual occurrence in the region.

The Singapore National Environment Agency told Reuters that there had "been a deterioration in the haze conditions" over the last 24 hours because of the prevailing winds coming from the direction of Sumatra. Under the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI), the haze is currently rated as being in the low- to mid- sections of the 'unhealthy' range of air quality.

While at this stage it's not considered severe enough to affect the staging of the Grand Prix, a number of local sporting events were cancelled this weekend over concerns about the air quality.

The Grand Prix organisers are mainly concerned that if the smog grows much thicker during the week then it could potentially affect driver visibility, as dust particles may be highlighted and reflected by the glare of the powerful floodlights used to transform the night time streets of the city into a top sporting venue.

"The possibility of haze is just one of the many potential issues that are covered in the overall 2015 Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix Contingency Plan," a spokesperson for the event told Reuters.

"In the event that the haze caused visibility, public health or operational issues Singapore GP would work closely with the relevant agencies before making any collective decisions regarding the event."

Air quality and visibility has been an issue in the past Formula One in nearby Shanghai, which saw a practice session for the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix delayed by 20 minutes because it wasn't safe to operate the medical evacuation helicopter.

As for the general weather outlook, forecasts of some thundery outbreaks and showers in the days leading up to the Grand Prix might actually help improve the air quality by washing some of the dust particulates out of the atmosphere.

The two practice sessions on Friday could also be affected by rain, but Saturday is set to be mainly dry with only very light showers in the area, and the race on Sunday should see dry and settled conditions with little chance of precipitation expected at this point.

In the seven years since Singapore joined the FIA world championship calendar, there has never been a wet race at the popular venue.

This year's race will be held on a slightly revised circuit, after local redevelopment work in the city led to a remodelling in the middle sector through turns 11, 12 and 13 across the Anderson Bridge.

Organisers are hoping that a widened turn 13 will give more overtaking opportunities to the drivers in this year's race. It's only the second time that the circuit has been modified, with the 'Singapore Sling' turn 10 chicane having been removed in 2013.

PIRELLI ANNOUNCE TYRE COMPOUNDS FOR NEXT THREE RACES

Pirelli have announced the tyre compounds for the forthcoming races in Singapore, Japan and Russia, the next three Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar.

For this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, the traditional street circuit compounds of the P Zero Red Supersoft and P Zero Yellow Soft tyres will be used, which are suited to the track as they warm up quickly and provide excellent mechanical grip.

For the following race at Suzuka, the other two compounds of tyre are to be used, with the P Zero Orange Hard and the P Zero White Medium compounds being utilised. The Suzuka circuit requires a lot from the tyres due to its high number of fast corners, and the two hardest compounds are best suited to the demands of the Japanese track.

For the race at Sochi, Pirelli have altered their choices compared to a year ago, deciding to go one level softer, meaning the 2015 race will see the P Zero Yellow Soft and the P Zero Red Supersoft tyres being used. Tyre wear was not an issue during the inaugural race in 2014, so the decision to go to the softer options will be interesting.

I think Ferrari will do well in Singapore and don't be surprised if you see Seb starting on pole here.... He loves this track.

I don't think so. There is only so much a driver can do. And I think Red Bull getting the pole is more likely in Singapore if we are going to have a non-Mercedes pole.

I just hope that smog won't cause any large problems that will make it necessary to quit the race...

If Singapore is cancelled, I would be extremely depressed. Not only because we have a great chance of winning or that it should be a cracker of a race but because it's such a pretty race to watch.

Many realistic fans here begining of the season were positive 2016 and no sooner would Ferrari have podium or for sure never a win any sooner. Merc and no one else with a win. I can only believe them wrong again and Seb with a few more wins. Who knows it might even be Kimi on the podium! We are actually in it still. Just ask Nico with his Merc. Lewis for one agrees with me, Ferrari is a threat every race.

the pics I saw yesterday on twitter didn't look very encouraging
Hope it can change soon to the better ... not only the view also the reason that causes the smog
"If I was driving for Red Bull [from 2008] probably I would have more championships, but because they were dominating between 2010 and 2014 probably I would never have driven for Ferrari. I am very happy and very proud to drive for Ferrari, all my time there.

Merc front row lock out for sure. We should be right up there aswell. The Williams may struggle, as FI, as they slippery cars anyway. RBR, will be close for sure but not near front running pace.

I know im wishing, but this race could end the run of Lewis, may never happen but he may clip the wall in race if we or Nico pressure him.

We have nice chance to be on pole here in Singapore but let us not forget that Mercedes car is still powerful, it's just that we are going to be powerful also :D
Lewis driving skills will matter here a lot
As for Red Bull they might be on podium but not in front of us.

I'm afraid it can. Street Race with a very poor invisibility its a very dangerous thing.
Anyone knows a correct weather forecast for the weekend? Imagine if it rains on top of the smog, that is going to be one tricky situation :D

SINGAPORE DECLARES AIR QUALITY 'VERY UNHEALTHY'
Monday 14 September at 10:35 : Sep.14 (GMM) Hazy skies are once again hanging over the Singapore grand prix.

In the days before last year's popular night race in the city-state, the local environmental agency said air pollution had reached "unhealthy" levels due to fires in nearby Indonesia.

The very same problem has now returned for 2015, except this time the level has risen to "very unhealthy", one step below the maximum category "hazardous".

Some sports events in Singapore have already been cancelled, including the University Games and a football match.

One spectator with a ticket for the F1 action told the Singapore publication Today: "My main concern is that it might get uncomfortable in the stands, especially if people around me aren't feeling well."

Another added: "I'll try to bring a mask along with me, even though it will be quite cumbersome."

There are also concerns for the drivers, with authorities already advising against strenuous outdoor exercise.
