Mercedes expects Ferrari to be even closer in Bahrain

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff expects an "even smaller" advantage over Ferrari at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Mercedes one-two in Australia hid the fact Ferrari led much of the grand prix and arguably threw away victory with a questionable strategy call. Though it seems Mercedes has retained an advantage over one lap, locking out the front row in Melbourne, Ferrari's fast starts are a point of concern for the world champions.

Wolff thinks the characteristics of the desert circuit will swing the balance back towards Ferrari in Bahrain this weekend.

"We have made a solid start to the season," Wolff said. "However, while our advantage in Melbourne was a healthy one, it was nevertheless close enough that those bad starts could easily have lost us the race. Bahrain is a track that should suit Ferrari, so we expect even smaller gaps and a very close match this weekend. After a successful debut for the new tyre regulations last time out, we can also expect an interesting strategy battle during the race -- so there is plenty to look forward to."

One point of interest this weekend is the different tyre allocations chosen by Mercedes and Ferrari under the new regulations. While Ferrari has opted to take three of the hardest available compound, the medium tyre, Mercedes has gone aggressive with just one of the compound it spend the majority of winter testing on and therefore more soft tyres than its nearest rivals.

Technical chief Paddy Lowe thinks the low chance of rain in Sakhir makes tyre choices even more vital.

"Bahrain is quite a different track to Melbourne, so it will be interesting to see how we fare," Lowe said. "One thing you can normally guarantee is that it will be dry. Unlike the rain-hit Melbourne weekend, this will provide plenty of opportunity for track time. Thanks to their evening timings, qualifying and the race in Bahrain see much cooler track temperatures than the mid-afternoon FP1 / FP3 sessions -- making the latter somewhat unrepresentative. This potentially makes tyre selection even more of a factor.

"We know already that there is a marked difference between the allocations selected by competing teams for this race, so we could see a few surprises. A big positive from Melbourne was seeing how well the new tyre rules delivered in terms of strategy variation - and we expect to see more of the same here. We've seen close battles throughout the field in both years of twilight racing in Bahrain, so we look forward to hopefully providing another spectacular evening for the fans."
Ι'm a bit skeptical with our tire choices because of the colder temperatures in the evening (race and qualy).
Unless we never intend to use them and we only need them to test our upgrades in FPs!!!
Again so anxious and excited on the same time!!!!

It almost appears as if Mercedes is going super aggressive and going to use a 4 pit stop strategy and push hard all out in every stint- ss, s, s, s. The one set of mediums is an insurance backup in case the safety car is deployed later in the race. Ferrari appear to be going with a three pit stop strategy- ss, m, s most likely.

I think it all depends on start..!! If ferrari is ahead, merc will go for 1stop less than ferrari. As they knew, they cant win on outright pace if ferrari is ahead. On the other hand, ferrari will be aggressive.

ALLISON TAKES BREAK AFTER SUDDEN DEATH OF WIFE

James Allison is spending some time away from formula one as he mourns the recent death of his wife, it has emerged.

On his wife Rebecca’s Facebook page, the 48-year-old Briton confirmed to friends and family last week that she died suddenly from meningitis.

“We at Ferrari are united with him and his family during this period of profound sorrow,” said Ferrari, where Allison is the technical director.

Speed Week, a German-language publication, claims that following Rebecca’s death, Allison returned home to Britain. Normally, he commutes between Britain, where his wife lived with their three children, and his work in Italy.

“From Italy, we hear that to Ferrari’s credit, James Allison has been given total freedom to organise his life anew,” said correspondent Mathias Brunner. “Nobody knows when he will return to the race tracks again.”

But we reported in February that Allison actually did not plan to travel to all the grands prix in 2016, after Ferrari signed up Jock Clear to head track operations.
Good one from the team!!The proper thing to do.
I dont think it will affect our development program and James can take his time.

0.5 sec is too much, expected gain is around 0.1-0.2 sec as per the info.

Tifosi 1993, Thanks for the great photos. Look closely at the brake photos, are they tops from wine bottles that Brembo is using to secure the wheels ?

Important updates to the Power Unit in Spain to issue the turbocharger of SF-16H.
The too large turbine creates the "turbo lag" effect, they are trying to solve the problem with the electronics fact Vettel and Raikkonen are turning with P.U. power away not to create problems to the turbocharger.

You are right. The initial source was AMUS who claimed that Ferrari had a major overheating issues. Ferrari rubbished this claim.

We can better hope that there is something in this story but that we can cope with it and then fix it, which would mean there is A LOT to come from us

According to Motorsport.com the problem is not with the turbo.

Not all, it's just related to engine boost. They've got solution to the reliability concerns, that's wt getting heard from the early reports.

if its reliability, and the FIA agrees that the changes are for that, you can make changes without using tokens.

That's wt I said earlier, tokens are for the updates related to quali set up. Which will see some power improvement specific for qualy.
For reliability updates, no tokens needed.
But the plan as of now is to introduce big package for Spanish GP which will help qualy + reliability issues and reports are +ve that we might make significant progress.
