Formula 1 speed comparison 2014-2015 Cars around half a second faster
The rules remained in winter 2014/2015 largely stable. Pirelli brought softer blends too many races, which were but overall harder. So a tie here, too. Nevertheless, the formula 1 has become faster. In the training of 0,519 and in the race to 0.350 seconds.

The second hybrid year F1 is run. The engines have become a little louder and a little stronger. The cars thanks to modified nose typically beautiful. But they were also faster? Only a comparison of training records and fastest race lap by 2014 shows that to today.
Stable rules allow fair comparisonFor a fair comparison you need stable rules. That was the case this year. The new provisions for the nose of the vehicle cost 10 percent output on paper though, but the designers had offset that practically again with their new cars. For Pirelli provided a new rear tyre construction, which allowed a better traction due to an enlarged supporting surface. The minimum weight increased from 692 to 701 kilograms. In compensation, the engines were allowed to be equipped with variable intake funnels. Result: better drivability.
Even when the tyre compounds, the a measure weighed on the other. Pirelli ran softer rubber compounds on many routes. But the four types of tyre were also harder. Along with this came that Pirelli from the GP Italy demanded higher pressures and lower values of camber, which pushed the pace.

Singapore with the largest gain of speed

Before we get to the result of the comparison of speed, yet a constraint. In six of the 18 cases, the weather prevented a statement. 2014 it rained five times in qualifying. This year only two times. While Malaysia overlapped. In the race, the weather was gracious. Only the comparison in Japan is eliminated. Last year, a typhoon hindered the Grand Prix.
A comparison of the race cut is possible due to the different safety car deployments only in five cases. Amazing knowledge: in three of the five races, formula 1 in 2014 was faster on target.
But now to the relevant figures. To make it short. Formula 1 has been compared by 12 training personal bests in average to 0,519 seconds faster. The largest difference occurred with 1,696 seconds in favor of 2015 in Singapore. What was a slightly more fluid Chicane before the Anderson bridge. On the other hand Mercedes put to even a lot less on himself. Just three tenths.
Two racetracks loomed against progress. Interlagos was particularly blatant with 1,259 seconds slower lap times at the 2015 Edition. It was a track that was not used for a year and in four corners with aggressive kerbs fitted on top.
The 17 comparisons of the fastest race laps were better lap times on the 2015 cars 0.350 seconds on average. The previous time was broken 13 times. Most in Melbourne (1.533 s), Montreal (1,517 s) and Monza (1,332 s). With four Grand Prix went 2014 faster. Shanghai, Spa, Interlagos and Abu Dhabi were below the 2015 values.

Formula 1 WINS on straight and when accelerating

What we get from the numbers? Formula 1 was mainly there faster, where there are lots of stop- and -go. The reasons are obvious. More efficient engines have pushed in 13 of the 18 cases the top speeds. In Australia and Russia over 11 km/h. The automotive engineers have worked much on the stability under braking and traction. There the most time was to be expected. Torque is available in abundance. Who puts it best on the road, makes good most of the time.
Not a lot has happened in the fast corners. Since the new noses rule has apparently led that the usual output growth has been curbed. It is so also to explain that on tracks with fluid curves follow the lap time improvement turned out to be the lowest or not entered. There is an explanation for the stagnation of the total times in the race. The 2015 Pirelli tires allowed in mint condition while a faster lap time, but not indefinitely.
I'm sure there's some insights to be gained for those with a knack for analytics, so I look forward to hearing these!

So basically Ferrari of 2015 was as fast as Mercedes of 2014. The 0.5 in qualy and 0.35 in race seems about right.
