They are still faster. The runs were +- 15 laps long. That's enough to make 2 stop strategy work, with the use of softs for other stints.

Look at the time sheets, Ham set his fastest on his 2nd lap, Ros on his 4th lap, whilst Vet on his 5th lap. So it's obvious Vet could have gone much quicker, but we also know that the Mercs are not going flat out for pure speed just yet.

Or it means that it takes us longer to heat up the tires which would hurt us in the limited time we have in Q

Why does the media just go crazy and say; Ferrari have caught up with Mercedes etc etc!! It's Free Practice.. It literally means nothing.

I've had it with those crazy optimists. They just don't understand, NO we have not caught up with Mercedes, NO we will not catch up with Mercedes until the end of the year, MAYBE we will be 2nd best.

Furthermore I am sure that this "Renault PU heavy upgrade" has a lot to do with Torro Rosso having the Ferrari 2015 PU. They have learned a lot from TR, that is my guess

Lewis Hamilton says he was impressed by the gains made by Ferrari with the updated Formula 1 turbocharger it introduced for this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

Ferrari used two engine development tokens for the update, taking its tally to 28 and leaving just four remaining, with engineering chief Jock Clear saying the changes "performed as expected".

Hamilton topped the times in second practice but Sebastian Vettel split the Mercedes and was just 0.257 seconds adrift of the reigning world champion.

"The Ferraris look very quick," said Hamilton. "They've got a new turbo so they've picked up their pace on the straights.

"Whether or not they've turned their engine up to test that, I'll assume they probably have, but we will see tomorrow.

"The Ferraris look quite quick and the Red Bulls will be quick also.

"Particularly with the Ferraris it looks like we might be very close with them.

"Hopefully we're going to have a bit of a race here."

Hamilton was impressive across both practice sessions but ran off track and even kissed the wall as he explored the limits.

"It's been a great day, you're not pushing hard enough if you don't go off the track, you'll never get near the limit if you don't go off the track," he said.

"I went off the track lots of times as I'm trying to discover the limit, trying to get as close to the limit to stay just above the limit.

"I was nearly in the wall several times, but fortunately I was able to stay out of it."

Rosberg was half-a-second adrift of his team-mate in third and admitted he was at a loss over his lack of pace.

"I need to understand if it's tyre temperatures or just me and driving lines or something like that. I need to understand that," he said.

"The long run was looking good, our car's looking good.

"The Ferraris seem pretty close but it's always so difficult on a Friday, you never knew what fuel levels they're running, how much engine power they're using.

"Red Bull had their engine turned down completely in the last session so they didn't show anything."

Kimi Raikkonen was left frustrated with his performance in free practice for the Canadian Grand Prix after he and Ferrari failed to make progress with his SF16-H.

While Sebastian Vettel showed promising pace and reported positive signs from the Scuderia’s turbo upgrade, his team-mate was a quiet fifth in FP1 and a distant eighth in the afternoon session.

Raikkonen seemed to be on a very different programme in FP2, spending the major part of the session racking up the laps at the bottom of the timesheets before improving in the closing stages.

Asked whether he had experienced any problems, the Finn replied: “It was far from an ideal day, we just struggled a bit and couldn’t make any sense of the car.

Pressed to disclose more about the nature of the issues, Raikkonen added: “We want to make the car handling better and we didn’t manage to do so. It’s one of those days when you keep changing but it still doesn’t work exactly as you hoped.

“We tried many things and we have to go through them and pick the right thing for Saturday.”

Sebastian Vettel said his Ferrari’s new suspension and turbo revisions “gave us what we expected” after lapping within 0.257s of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes around Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Friday.

It was the closest Ferrari has been to the Mercedes on a Friday afternoon since beating them in an FP2 1-2 in Shanghai in April.

After today’s practice, Vettel said: “Overall the car seems to work, there’s nothing wrong – all the bits that we brought seem to give us what we expected. That’s good news from today.

“The car’s always very alive here, with the kerbs it’s quite a rough trip. There are some things we need to improve, we need to work on.

“We need to do our best, to see where that takes us, but the closer we can be already from Friday, the better.”

When asked by Sky Sports if his target this weekend was to split the Mercedes duo, Vettel replied: “Ideally I hope not to split them, to be ahead of them.

“I think they’ll be quick – that’s not a surprise, it’s a circuit that suits them and they’ve been very competitive here for the last couple of years.”

    Raikkonen admits to struggles

Conversely, teammate Kimi Raikkonen failed to get to grips with his SF16-H around Montreal, and was only eighth fastest today.

“It was a far from ideal day,” said Raikkonen. “We struggled to make any sense of the car. Obviously we want to make the car’s handling better and we didn’t manage to do it. One of those days that things keep changing and nothing seems to work exactly as you hope.

“We tried many things to go through, and then we have to pick the right things for tomorrow.”

Seb got the benifits of the upgrades even though the driver ahead in points," Kimi " usually gets the new nose turbo improvements. Kimi has patience for sure.

Kimi Raikkonen: “It was not an easy day, one of those days when you keep making changes and nothing seems to work exactly as you hoped. We struggled to make the car handling better but we did not manage to do it. It’s difficult to talk about the updates in the car, we are in a different place and in different conditions, but as I said before we wouldn’t use new parts if they didn’t improve the car. Today we tried many different things, now we have to go through them, analyse all data and pick the right things for tomorrow.”

Sebastian Vettel: “The car felt ok today, but it was quite nervous, which is normal around this track with all the curbs and the bumps. But overall it was a good day, all the things we brought seem to work, even if I am not yet entirely happy. But then show me one driver that is entirely happy with the car on Friday…you always have the feeling you can improve.”

This weekend is very important for Ferrari after two races (or two qualifications?) Very difficult peak in this seventh round of the season to annoy the German team that once again the favorite of both the pole position for tomorrow and the race , ie the Mercedes.

All technical innovations introduced on the SF16-H that we have analyzed between yesterday and today, according to the top driver of the Italian team, Sebastian Vettel, they worked as the team had expected . Starting with analyzing the times qualifying setup stands out as the two Ferrari SF16-H seems to make even more effort of the Mercedes duo to warm up the tires as both Vettel Raikkonen have printed their best times in the second lap. As for Hamilton on the other hand, the super time was carried out on the first lap, while team-mate in the second lap he improved his lap time of just a few thousandths. Unlike Vettel, Raikkonen seemed more distressed than his team-mate, especially in qualifying conditions. The setups tested by both drivers of the Italian team still do not seem fully convinced them and in the evening will have to work a lot especially in Raikkonen's team to find a little square on the correct setup for sending in temperature faster tires. As far as we have heard, Mercedes made in the fast lap during the second free practice would have some more kilos of gasoline (not many anyway). The simulation on Saturday in qualifying configuration morning in our view will be more truthful to understand if Ferrari will be still be so close to Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes starts from super favorite especially with Lewis Hamilton who appeared today in a state of grace on the Montreal track. On W07 Hybrid in the first part of the very first session have been tried some aerodynamic components that we will see again in the next race on the track that It will be held at the new Baku route.

Behind Mercedes and Ferrari's RedBull , that thanks to the new Power Unit Renault has shown going strong even on a track that does not fit fully in the package brought to the track by the Austrian team. But Williams is not so far away and that there it could be expected given the technical characteristics of the FW38, not very different from those of previous cars. To understand then with the "classic" Mercedes rotary if the Groove Team star will become the third force of the Canadian Grand Prix.

After these brief premises we analyze the long runs made by leading pilots during these free practice 2.

Home Ferrari the work carried out by the pilots has been differentiated as Raikkonen made a long long run on soft tires in the early stages of free while Vettel has focused initially on the laps with not too much fuel on board (talk about qualifying regime but a bit excessive). In the final phase of free both drivers have done instead of the long runs, but using different tires: Raikkonen with ultra soft and Vettel on the soft .

Given the different work done by the team is very difficult to go to equate performance. Mercedes at home, as you can see from the table below, Hamilton turned on equal tires almost two tenths faster than the pace of his team-mate even though the long runs the English driver was 14 laps against 20 of Rosberg. Equating the number of revolutions of two stints you can say that you do not notice so much difference to the lap, with Rosberg who is comfortable in race trim . In the second stint on used soft tires Rosberg was faster than Hamilton half a second. But in this part of the race simulation we have to consider as Nico Rosberg started from a smaller amount of petrol (about ten kg consumed in 6 rounds in most of the first stint) that mean about a tenth and a half of advantage for the pilot German. A so because it does not explain the difference of half a second per lap between the two Mercedes drivers.

The performance of the Ferrari are hardly comparable with those of Mercedes because of the different work done. If we take the first of Raikkonen stint with soft tires, the Finn seems to have simulated the second stint of the race, on a track but could not guarantee the performance resulted in the final part of the session. The Canadian track is very "green" on Friday and with the passage of the various cars are rubber and improves with each lap. The Finn has shot with a pace comparable to that of Vettel despite having a worse track , but away from two Mercedes, one second and three tenths behind Rosberg and eight tenths behind Hamilton. Both Ferraris had definitely more fuel on board the Mercedes duo but not enough to justify such a large gap. But there is to emphasize that the Italian Scuderia, especially with UltraSoft able to treat them better , having less performance deterioration of Mercedes stint in the stronger side but degrades a little more with each passing lap.

As for Vettel the first stint on soft tires was relatively short (6 laps) and therefore not very indicative. The second stint was performed with ultrasoft tires, paying 3/10 of step plus at least 1-2 tenths of fuel due to the fact that the German driver covered the first 6 turns on Soft compound (about 10 kg by calculating the 6 laps on Soft).

Red Bull , it seems today is going very weakened, more than Mercedes and Ferrari. The pace in race conditions , as you can see from the table, has not been very positive but there still should be emphasized that, at least for two stints on SuperSoft the weather conditions were not the best for the good of the rubber type operation.

In conclusion we can say definitely say that Mercedes remains the favored both as regards the Pole Position that as regards the step race with two cars that tend to exchange the position in the two simulations: Hamilton more effective in lap, while Rosberg succeeds in better functioning of the tires in the "long." the Ferrari by analyzing the timing of the second session of free practice does not seem too close to Mercedes and indeed, we think especially tomorrow will have to control the return of Williams (historically the Groove Team to Saturday afternoon brings out something extra compared to Friday afternoon) and RedBull, Team which is said not too far from the red, with a hooking impossible. It will be important to the work that the technicians of the Italian team will play together with their drivers to get the most from SF16-H. In addition to this we must also take into account as in the afternoon tomorrow the environmental temperature will be few degrees higher than today's ones with the track that will warm even more. We trust that this increase in temperature does not create any major problems to the SF16-H, problems that have caused the very bad performance of the two previous qualifications. Ferrari, however, as was predictable, seems to be once again become the second force in the field, even if that just wrote will serve to confirm it tomorrow. For the Italian Scuderia minimum of tomorrow objective must be the second row (full!), And a dream can be considered the first. Then what can we expect the weather on Sunday, it is likely to affect a lot even on visas track results today. If we have more news about the free practice 2 (since they are terminated by a few hours) we will not hesitate to comunicarvele through the two official accounts of FunoAnalisiTecnica Team: @SmilexTech and @Spontonc!

    Just a thought:
if it is this cool, it will take even longer to get tyres up to temperature, we already have problems with this.. This could mean it takes us 4-5 laps to get one good lap out of a US, which perhaps isn't possible in qualy.. Perhaps it is interesting to (depending on wheather ofcourse) try and qualy on SS/S (depending on which on you get turned on), this will be an advantage in the beginning of the race and perhaps the loss isn't to big because of T..

Yeah it's quite cool this morning but will warm up to like 22 for quali
    With overcast and no rain

But race day is another story with rain and only 15 degrees which will be bad for us

But who knows maybe will turn up our way for once

Off I go for breakfast and will be in GS33 for quali

    FORZA FERRARI
So 2023 started off bad, but managed to claw back some lap time come end of the year. Lets hope SF24 will give us tifosi something to smile about.
