Other top tier drivers only making half what he's asking for or what he's been offered. Plus the simple fact that Merc have shown that other drivers can win in their car, ones that don't demand a $50million price tag.
I agree with all you are stating. It's possible he would have been offered even less had he not put up a fight. Let's face it they need each other. And Lewis sure as hell earned his pay. A bonus if he wins WDC WCC for them sounds like a great way for Merc to compromise without looking bad and he gets the incentive to be rewarded if he does what he's been doing. A win win situation .

I believe 40 yrs. old is no longer old for F-1 drivers. Seb's hero drove until 44 ! If not for Nico ; who knows how much longer he would have stayed behind the wheel? I believe any driver giving his best deserves to be paid the best. Charles deserves a pay raise just for sticking around Ferrari !
Pay cut as no driver makes the difference at Merc. Whoever they choose will be 1 and 2 in title. Despite his skills Hamilton has made no difference to the end result for Merc. They saw Russell replicate his performance in a highly compromised weekend and they could pay him next to nothing. Merc are the knigmakers why would they not cut his pay? They are not a charity. They could pit out their seat to whoever takes the least money a d will still win everything.

Turrini: "To me 30HP seems a bit low. For example I know of concerns regarding the oval exhaust (Turrini means some issues around the exhaust area). At Haas and Alfa, they whisper that they don't expect anything exceptional."

For me 30-40HP raise is good with the amount of DF we have. It will give a hope to compete against RB-Honda & Renault (wish they don’t have major gains)

Can you list the non Merc F-1 drivers who would not have won that race in that Merc car? Russell with zero wins zero podiums a 3 points season finish almost won which is a big deal for a driver with his stats. The 18th place to 1st. place winner is the star of that race. Besides Russell's team mate ; who else did he out drive last season? There are no points for quali . positions except the pole start qual. is no big deal .

Mate, we’re in this game to WIN.....not to fight with rb-Honda and Renault....if that’s the case Ferrari have failed YET again....year in and year out.....so maybe ferrari are jinxed not to win a WCC in this rules format....we can hope 2022 when rules will change we might be strong again....but my motto is....I believe it when I see it

If it's only 30-40 HP then even 2022 won't be good for us. This years engine has to be at near Merc levels or we're just going to be in the same situation we've been in for the last 7 years.
Hard to believe that Ferrari will only improve by 30 HP. If we as fans are saying that's not enough, then why would Binotto say he's happy with the new engine's dyno numbers. At least they need to get back to 2019 levels, and if the 30 HP is above that engine then we'll be in good shape. This years engine was a cobbled together mess due to the late TD's issued by the FIA, probably similar to 2019 engine minus the tricks. Binotto was talking about having a new engine on the dyno that was supposed to replace this one mid-season or even at the start of the season but Covid caused the shutdown and then the engines were frozen. If that is the case then that engine should have been on par with Honda & Renault or better. So I'm hoping that engine has been improved even further over the course of the year and if so, 30 extra HP would be ok. It should bring us near the front of the grid.
If Turrini is right and it's only 30HP above what we had last year... RIP 2021.

HP is going to help big time@ Ferrari, but if they can get Russell to drive it will be a sure WDC WCC. He almost won a race in that Merc.

I must admit, this it the best way of putting it that I've come across so far.

F1 Testing could be pushed to Bahrain instead of Barcelona. Teams gave a positive feedback about this plan.

According to Motorsport Italy, the date has also been defined (from 12-14 March), so after the F2 test which is scheduled from 9-11 March.

Having a fast car isn't an automatic win. Tire management comes into play and that comes with experience...sort of.

I know of 6 drivers, other than his Lewis-ness, whom are fast and manage their tires well--> Max, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Perez, Norris & Gasly. Throw in Alons as well.

Fast but not WDC fast; fast tires and all. Alonso is the exception if he's still Alonso of old. I believe he is. Lewis only needs 3 tires to win a race!!

Williams is becoming Mercs 4th team on the grid next year. So we have a black, green, white and orange Mercedes to compete with. If Ferrari’s new engine doesn’t produce enough HP, we will be be battling for positions 16-20 with the other Ferrari powered cars.

Whaaaaat??? I’m pretty sure we can out qualify the Williams (even with their Merc engine again) we’ve done it in 2020, NO???

So if we were in front of them, I’m sure we’ll be miles ahead of them in 2021 with an extra 30 ponies as per rumor....

But in all seriousness, I get what you’re saying.....let’s hope Harry Potter is playing it low and we’re actually gonna have a quite strong engine for next season.....

A through and through fan can only hope NO??

For those that think that Merc has all the cards in their contact negotiations with LH.
Yes, they don't want to be blackmailed etc, or whatever you want to call it.
But LH is a brand Name and they don't want to face the angry response from the British press and of course LH fans around the world. So, they will compromise to 45 and everyone will be happy.

No danger of a British backlash. He may have a vocal core support but most people in the UK thin he's a "%$##. Merc hold all the cards. No doubt a compromise will be reached but Merc really dont have to.

Why would his countrymen feel that way? How much better can he do? 100, 100 , 8 will come soon enough, probably this season. Voted A knight in shining Armour is not enough, besides his F-1 records? Patience !

Pay attention before you judge someone. I only reply to posts that bring up his name first. Just like you just did 3 xs in one sentence ! OK; he's the GOAT, you don't have to keep bringing that up in a negative way. Boring for sure. It is what it is.

He may be old and heartless, but he speaks the truth.....

Ecclestone renews calls to drop 'silly' hybrids

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has started the new year with his traditional call for the sport to drop hybrid power units and return to the ear-splitting era of V8 combustion engines.

Formula 1 has used 1.6 litre V6 turbo hybrids since 2014, an era that has been dominated by Mercedes with seven consecutive constructors championships. The current technical regulations are due to stay in place until at least 2024.

However fans have lamented the quieter, more efficient engines compared to their boisterous, full-throated predecessors.

The huge response to Fernando Alonso taking his 2005 title-winning Renault V10-powered R245 for a spin in Abu Dhabi last month has renewed calls for F1 to think again and return to the glory days of motor racing - a view clearly shared by Ecclestone.

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has started the new year with his traditional call for the sport to drop hybrid power units and return to the ear-splitting era of V8 combustion engines.

The huge response to Fernando Alonso taking his 2005 title-winning Renault V10-powered R245 for a spin in Abu Dhabi last month has renewed calls for F1 to think again and return to the glory days of motor racing - a view clearly shared by Ecclestone.

Read also: Red Bull could build its own engine if costs permit

"Let’s get rid of these bloody silly engines they have now," Ecclestone said in a new interview with Motorsport Magazine. “I’ll be in trouble for this!"

Ecclestone said that reviving V8s for an interim period would solve at a stroke the problem of F1's spiralling costs in developing hybrid technology.

"Let’s dig out all the old normally aspirated engines,” he said. “Everybody’s got them, the costs go right down, the noise will be back, and we can use them for five years while we sort out an engine for the future.

"F1 is in the entertainment business and when you stop entertaining you haven’t got a business," he added. "The people in the grandstands aren’t interested in how super-efficient they are, how much fuel they use, how powerful they are."

A decade ago Ecclestone was persuaded to accept the move to hybrid technology in order to keep F1 aligned with road cars, but he now feels that had been a mistake.

“Formula 1 doesn’t have to be relevant to the car industry,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of changes. Everyone will have electric cars, the politicians will see to that. You won’t be able to take a petrol car into a city.

"People will say, ‘Hang about, all these F1 cars charging round, why aren’t they electric?’ And the manufacturers are going to stop making petrol or diesel cars within a few years."

Formula E already has the franchise for single-seater all-electric motor racing from the FIA, while the World Endurance Championship is revamping its LMDh sports car regulations to replace expensive higher-cost hybrids in favour of electrification in order to get manufacturers like Audi and Porsche to return.

Formula 1 currently has four manufacturers supplying power units to the ten teams on the grid. However Honda has already announced that it is pulling out of the sport at the end of 2021.

That leaves Red Bull and AlphaTauri currently without engines next season. The team bosses are trying to convince the sport to allow them to continue using the current Honda units by introducing a development freeze.

“Honda is going, Red Bull will take the engine but that will only work if the others agree to freeze," acknowledged Ecclestone. "Otherwise they’ll just go on spending God knows what to stay ahead."

However Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari have all re-stated their commitment to supporting and continuing with hybrid technology for the foreseeable future.

They argue that their F1 expenditure is justified by its impact on sales of road car ranges featuring a rising number of hybrid and electric models.
