Even after Ferrari’s breakthrough win at the Malaysian Grand Prix, their former star driver Fernando Alonso insists he has no regrets about swapping from the Maranello team for the back of the grid.

“Looking forward!” he wrote on Twitter after Sepang, where his Ferrari replacement Sebastian Vettel sensationally won. “Very happy!”

A Reuters reporter, however, admitted he feels a “twinge of pity” for the 33-year-old Spaniard, while The Times said Malaysia had left Alonso red-faced.

Corriere della Sera said: “Sebastian leaves the Alonso era behind and leads us back to where the Ferrari success story was interrupted.”

Alonso himself, however, insists he has no regrets about having joined McLaren-Honda, telling El Mundo Deportivo that Mercedes is still clearly the dominant team in F1. Ferrari has progressed, yes. But enough to beat Mercedes regularly? I don’t think so.”
Indeed, many others in the paddock also expect the pecking order to resume the silver hue in Shanghai, the scene of the forthcoming Chinese grand prix in two weeks.

Pat Symonds, Williams’ technical boss, thinks Ferrari’s Sepang win was related to the very high temperatures last weekend.

“As soon as it warms up,” he told Auto Motor und Sport, “the Mercedes has problems with its rear tyres. It reminds me of their problems in the years 2010 to 2013.”

Nico Rosberg admitted Mercedes has work to do after Malaysia and told Bild, “I’m flying to England this week as we need to sit down as a team and draw the right conclusions from our defeat in Malaysia.”

“Vettel’s pace was pretty scary and it was totally unexpected. I particularly want to know why we had so many problems with the tyres,” he added.

It's hard not to feel a little bad for him, but honestly, he was the one who asked Luca if he could be let out of his contract. That could have been his car this year if he had just ignored Mattiacci's stupid comments. I would not mind seeing him back in 2016 or 2017 before pairing Sebastian with a young driver, however.

I very much doubt that Mattiacci's comments had anything to do with him leaving. He had already made this decision long time before that.

I gotta agree with the above that Nico is the most fragile. I don't doubt he's subconsciously doubting his ability to win the WDC this year. His body language said it all. Before, he just had to battle Lewis. Now, if our form continues to get better, I feel he will become (hurts to say this a bit) the Barrichello of Mercedes. Good driver, just not good enough to be the #1 the team can rely on.

I know they can change diff settings, but how else could a driver "balance a car a little more"? Am I reading into that too much? Almost makes me think we have something "trick" the drivers use.

I really have no animosity towards Fernando, it's just the nature of F1 that drivers are going to move around. For one reason or another, things grow stale, animosity grows or in the case of Ferrari there was an inability to improve for many reasons & I doubt Alonso's ability or development skills had anything to do with that!

I find it sad that many fans choose to forget how well he drove the car while he was here, he is a former Ferrari driver after all. He will always have my respect & admiration for the thrills & enjoyment he gave while here. And yes I would welcome him back without question.

Also, I would feel much better if we were beating him fair & square, so come on Honda, get that pu working so at least they can reliably finish a race!

I'm sure that if you could talk with Alonso's accountant, you woudn't feel sorry at all for him. He has many millions of reasons, well thought out for his choices I'm sure. Driving for F1 and making a few bucks doing what he loves id not in any way bad luck. When he's retired from his favorite occupation, all he wil be left with is his money decisions and his great memories. He seems to be a real lucky guy to me.

Lewis is a true champion driver. He doesn't need team orders to be #1 as was the case when Ferrari's driver needed Rubens to "Let him pass", to be #1. I don't believe Nico to be good enough a team driver to take team orders anytime soon. Both Lewis and Seb seem to be able to win on their own driving ability as long as the car is there for them.

Sebastian Vettel says the atmosphere at Ferrari has helped the team make such a big step forward at the start of 2015.

Ferrari failed to win a race at all last season, scoring just two podium finishes in a year dominated by Mercedes. However, Vettel delivered victory in only his second race for the team in Malaysia as he managed to beat Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in a straight fight. Kimi Raikkonen has previously said the atmosphere has improved at Ferrari over the winter, and Vettel agrees with his team-mate that it’s an important aspect of the upturn in form.

Asked if he expected to win so early in his Ferrari career, Vettel replied: “Of course not.

“I think for all of us we didn’t know, when we started in Melbourne, where we were, where the journey was going to start but I think the most important thing is that for both Kimi and myself, we had a very good feeling since the first test. We were happy with how the car feels and we were able to build onto that. We had some issues to solve which I think that just in time we got on top of so great job from the guys.

“So far, reliability has been very strong and I think today the key was to look after our tyres. That’s, I think, where we were able to close the gap a lot compared to Australia, compared to Mercedes. What it is, I think as I said, first of all, the guys have worked over the winter, tidied up a lot of things. Obviously I wasn’t around last year and I don’t know how last year’s car was but I was told that this year’s car is a lot better.

“I’m very happy with how the car feels, with the balance. It allows me to play and to work which I think is always crucial as a driver and then I think there’s a fresh wind, there’s a lot of new people. Some people have changed their position and so far I think the atmosphere is great, people are happy just to be there and do their job. They’re very passionate and I think that’s the most important thing.

“Everything else, of course, at this stage, is a bit of a surprise for us but of course we take it. The most important thing again, just like after Australia, we need to confirm that in the next races and then gradually try to catch these guys.”

A text message sent from Michael Schumacher's home in Switzerland reduced Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene to tears after the Malaysian grand prix.

After a tumultuous period for the great Italian marque, seven time world champion and Ferrari legend Schumacher's protege Sebastian Vettel broke through with a landmark and emotional win.

But Arrivabene, who worked with Ferrari during the Schumacher era as an executive for the team sponsor Marlboro, said he felt in control of his emotions after Vettel's win.

"I was trying all the time to stay cool," the Italian told Sport Bild.

"But then a text message made me cry."

The German magazine said the text was from Sabine Kehm, Schumacher's manager, who had reportedly watched the Sepang race at the house of her 46-year-old client, and at the side of Schumacher's wife Corinna.

Schumacher suffered brain damage in a skiing fall late in 2013, and has not been seen publicly since.

Arrivabene has admitted he sees striking similarities between Vettel and his German compatriot Schumacher.

"When I noticed it for the first time," he admitted, "I was very emotional.

"They have different natures, different personalities," said Arrivabene, "but the way Sebastian approaches his work - delving into every detail of how he can motivate everyone and criticise constructively - reminds me of Michael.

"Both share the same cultural background and this perfectionism, which they have brought to Ferrari," he added.

I'm sure that there is an emotional connection between Seb and Michael, what he stood for and the success he achieved, and if Seb can translate that into the legend that Michael became, we are heading in the right direction. Ferrari stands for passion and emotion, and always will do. Mr Arrivabene has certainly been a good arrival in our team!
