    Italian GP

    Hi all,

In two weeks time I will be attending the Italian GP at Monza In 2004 (I think) I went to see Friday practice at Spa, but this time it will be my first whole GP weekend. I will be sat at the first chicane for the weekend, and am planning to be at the circuit on Thursday too. I found this earlier, very useful (thanks Ste) http://www.thescuderia.net/forums/sh...ighlight=monza

From Thursday morning until Monday evening I will stay at a hotel in Milan, so will catch the train to Monza. I was wondering if any of you have some tips or recommendations about attending F1 in general or the Monza circuit in particular? Is there for instance some kind of radio channel with commentary (in English preferably) you can listen to? Any of you going to Monza? All help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Talked with Greig, he invited me back, so here I am....

Sander, we are going as well (entire family), will be in Hospitality but also roaming about the track meeting with friends... We also have tickets for section 18, outer Ascari A, so will be there as well.

We will mostly be there on Sat, in very early, out very late. Sunday we are watching from TV at a friends house very near by.

Train to Monza is the best idea, just much easier to get in and out!

As far as tips go, if you want to meet/see the drivers and or team members it's best to be in early and hang out until late. Thursdays are very good for that. Friday is probably 2nd best, Saturday 3rd best. Sunday everyone is packing up afterward, etc...

Bathrooms can be a bit sloppy by afternoon there, just be ready..

People are all very nice, all very friendly and out to enjoy!!!

I will check on English commentary for you. An old buddy here, userid Tomahawk, works for the Cavallino Rampante, and could answer this if he sees this post.

Don't forget to take in a few other sights. "Last Supper" by DiVinci is Amazing, etc.... You will need reservations for some things like the "Last Supper"

    Ciao

Thanks for your reply Mark, nice to read you're going too. I'm trying to figure out how to get to the track by train from our hotel at the moment. Seems like it's gonna take us about two hours in total. We will arrive at Malpensa airport on Thursday at 9 am so there should be enough time to spend the afternoon at the track, probably just exploring the track and the facilities. I plan to bring my camera with zoom lens to take some pictures. Probably best to try that on Thursday and Friday. Any tips?

For Monday we've planned some sightseeing in Milan, don't know exactly what yet. Have to get some more information about the possibilities.

Are there any nice restaurants in Monza? Our hotel in Milan doesn't have a restaurant so I suppose it would be nice to eat something in Monza after visiting the track. This way we could also avoid the stream of people leaving the track a bit.

    Any info would be appreciated.

Sander, I will get you some restaurant recommendations from our friends. We are staying in Vicenza for most of our stay but will be in a hotel in Milano for Thursday and Friday nights.. Friday will be your best bet for good photos, less crowded than Sat or Sun. I am bringing my camera as well.

Thanks again. I found this thread on the Autosport BB: http://forums.autosport.com/index.php?showtopic=134799

Don't know about those restaurants as I don't speak Italian (sadly ) Some recommendations would be great. Otherwise we'll just have to see and decide when we are there. We'll probably just be looking for a simple (pasta) meal. The thing is, it is exciting for me to plan things and gather some information. On the other hand it's also fun to just go there and explore, but I don't want to waste too much time when I'm there

Are there any Ferrari of F1-related stores, places or museums in Milan or surroundings? (of course my questons aren't aimed at you only Mark, so don't feel obliged to answer )

I was just thinking about the Thursday. Is it worth it to go to the track on Thursday? I don't know what to expect really. I know the drivers will be there and the teams will be preparing. I guess it's possible to walk around the track? I would like that, but as far as I know there is no racing action on Thursday. I'm in doubt, because there is surely a lot of other things to do in Milan.

We will be driving up there on Thursday afternoon, probably in the 5:00pm hour before we head out to dinner, just so we can check out where our parking pass is, etc.. The drivers are there, and it's easy to check things out for sure, but there are other things in Milan that are also very cool to see!

Mark, I received your message and replied to it. And thanks for the recommendations.

I guess it's best to go to the track on Thursday so I can collect the tickets and check things out. This will probably save me some time on Friday and the rest of the weekend. I want to make the most of the days I'm there and I can do some sightseeing on Monday.

SanderV, talked with my buddies Massimo and Piero. They say they are doing a lot of work around the track right now, so they have a traffic plan for the race. We are driving that way on Thursday to check out which roads will be open with parking, etc.. This could be a mess getting in and out if you are not taking the train in.

Good to know, but I will take the train from Milan to Monza. Might leave the hotel a bit earlier though

Thanks for the help so far. I am currently gathering some more info and arranging some things. Suddenly I thought about the old Monza track, the oval. If i remember correctly the oval is no longer accessible, right? It would be nice to see some history of the circuit though. I found some more information on the circuit and the history on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodromo_Nazionale_Monza Any recommendations about the track and the surroundings?

I believe that you can certainly walk the old track. When (if) I ever make it back, I most certainly will. Knowing I was walking the track the 156 Dino cruised would be awesome.

You can walk the old track in many places and parts of it are for access by the teams and the fans. I will take a stroll and some pictures while I am there.

Parked my old car on the old track, left some rubber as well, back in 2006, and yes you can walk it, if you stroll around the woods long enough, you will find pieces of old banked curves, and lost of other cool stuff.

Be sure not to miss a cup of coffie, at a place just outside of Lesmos,(dont remember the name of it) its near a bus parking for groups, but its a cool place.

The place to be for an F1 race, have fun!

That's more like it. I expected not to be the only on this forum going to Monza We have about the same schedule for the weekend, eriknaa. I will try to make it in time for the pitwalk on Thursday. From what I understand, there's no shuttle bus from Monza station to the circuit on Thursday. This means I would have to walk for atleast an hour. Does anyone know if it is possible to take a bus? I have to check in at my hotel in Milan at 1 pm, so I hope I can make it in time for the pitwalk at 3:30 pm. Maybe I'll have to find another solution regarding the check-in.

Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, here's a nice video about Ferrari. Hope you can view it from your location. http://formule1.nl/videos/view/331

When we reach the train station at monza, it is allways good to take a taxi to the track wish take around 10 min, or you cn take the train to lesmo, but then you will have to walk around to the start finish straight wish take around 30 min, since you have to walk all around....
But the pitwalk last to 6pm so i will definetly be there at some point durning the afternoon for that and the autograph session.
I Also expect to be in milan around 12.45 or 1PM since our plane is in milan 11.45.

Our plane lands at Malpensa at 8.35 but we have to wait for the check-in at the hotel. We could store our luggage there but I think I won't go to Monza without a room. A taxi from Monza station to the circuit is a possibility but depends also how expensive it is. As you said, there's enough time. I'm planning on exploring the track and the surroundings on Thursday.

And i see also sanderV that you where requesting a radio channel in english or something.
Then there is only one option, and that is to rent the kangaroo TV, where you get the public announcer from the track in your ears, or you can have BBC 5 live commwntary as well
The taxi ride is not that expensive, and is a good option to save time aswell.

I know about the Kangaroo TV option, but in my opinion it's not worth the money. I think that when you attend a race, you have to accept that it is a different experience from watching it on TV. That's one of the reasons to attend a race. Maybe you don't know the positions in the race exactly, but for me it's all about the experience, especially at Monza. I've read that there will be Italian and English commentary at the track, but it's probably hard to understand.

Thanks for the recommendation anyway. Are you renting a Kangaroo TV?

Yes i will rent a kangaroo tv, it the 3rd time i will rent one, and it adds a lot to the experience, and it gives you A LOT of good information.
The PA at the track is also very good, but the problem is that the cars are so much louder, so you can just hear bits of it...
Cant wait its going to be an amazing expereience, and to watch Michael again will be awsome
